I. INTRODUCTION:
A few weeks ago, I introduced a new series to you called “Go, Possess The Land”. Today, we will be continuing the series.
We started with Part I of Strong and Courageous with God calling Joshua forth as the new leader of the Children of Israel after the death of Moses.
The LORD told Joshua to rise and go over this Jordan with the children of Israel and to only be strong and of a good courage.
We then went into Part II of Strong and Courageous as we went back to review when Moses sent out the twelve spies and most of them brought back an evil report.
Only Joshua and Caleb believed they could possess the land that the LORD promised them.
I also discussed the importance of spiritual and physical relocation in order for God’s will to be fully realized in the life of the believer.
Now, this week, I will introduce Rahab and the pivotal role she played as she solidified her place in history.
The title of today’s message is “The Heroism of Rahab”.
GOLDEN TEXT:
JOSHUA 1:1-2, 5-8
Jos 1:1 Now after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD it came to pass, that the LORD spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ minister, saying,
2 Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel.
5 There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.
6 Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.
7 Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest.
8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous.

II. BODY:
HEROISM:
A. Heroic conduct especially as exhibited in fulfilling a high purpose or attaining a noble end.
B. The qualities of a hero.
1. The Introduction of Rahab:
JOSHUA 2:1-7
2:1 And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into an harlot’s house, named Rahab, and lodged there. (Reference the 2 points below)
2 And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in hither to night of the children of Israel to search out the country.
3 And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that are come to thee, which are entered into thine house: for they be come to search out all the country.
4 And the woman took the two men, and hid them, and said thus, There came men unto me, but I wist not whence they were:
5 And it came to pass about the time of shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out: whither the men went I wot not: pursue after them quickly; for ye shall overtake them. (I believe she had to really sell this and not be casual about it)
6 But she had brought them up to the roof of the house, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof.
7 And the men pursued after them the way to Jordan unto the fords: and as soon as they which pursued after them were gone out, they shut the gate.
Notice that Joshua only sent two spies. He was not directed to send twelve spies like Moses did in Numbers 13.
TWO POINTS TO CONSIDER FROM THIS:
A. NATURAL: It’s better from a strategic standpoint; a smaller number made them more agile, quicker, and easier to be concealed from the soldiers of Jericho.
The King of Jericho still received word that spies had come to their land, but Rahab helped them escape.
B. SPIRITUAL: It’s easier for two to be on one accord than twelve:
Are you seeing with the eyes of God?
Are you hearing with spiritual ears?
Are you thinking with the mind of Christ?
Do you believe what God said?
NOTE: Herein are several reasons why God has called pastors to feed their flocks with knowledge and understanding.
2. RAHAB MAKES A COVENANT WITH THE TWO SPIES:
JOSHUA 2:8-22

8 And before they were laid down, she came up unto them upon the roof;

9 And she said unto the men, I know that the LORD hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you.

10 For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.

11 And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.

12 Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the LORD, since I have shewed you kindness, that ye will also shew kindness unto my father's house, and give me a true token:

13 And that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.

14 And the men answered her, Our life for yours, if ye utter not this our business. And it shall be, when the LORD hath given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee.

15 Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the town wall, and she dwelt upon the wall.

16 And she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned: and afterward may ye go your way.

17 And the men said unto her, We will be blameless of this thine oath which thou hast made us swear.

18 Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father's household, home unto thee.

19 And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we will be guiltless: and whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him.

20 And if thou utter this our business, then we will be quit of thine oath which thou hast made us to swear.

21 And she said, According unto your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the scarlet line in the window.

22 And they went, and came unto the mountain, and abode there three days, until the pursuers were returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but found them not.

3. The Two Spies Return With A Good Report:
JOSHUA 2:23-24
23 So the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and told him all things that befell them:
24 And they said unto Joshua, Truly the LORD hath delivered into our hands all the land; for even all the inhabitants of the country do faint because of us. (Emphasis mine)
Where did they get that assurance from? Rahab! Where did they get that confidence from? Rahab!
III. CONCLUSION:
The History of Rahab:
Rahab was a harlot of Jericho, who hid the two spies.
She believed that the God of Israel was the true and living God.
Her faith is commended in the NT in Hebrews 11:31 and James 2:25 by her demonstration of faith by good works.
Hebrews 11:31 KJV 1900
31 By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace.
James 2:25 KJV 1900
25 Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?
Joshua spared Rahab and her family’s life because she followed through on the terms the two spies made with her (Joshua 6:17, 22, 25).
Rahab’s son, Boaz, married Ruth and became the father of Obed, the grand-father of Jesse, and the great grand-father of David.
Thus, a Canaanite harlot became part of the lineage of King David, from whom the Messiah descended!
This is a true demonstration that God’s grace and forgiveness is extended to all, and is not limited by our nationality or the nature of a person’s sins.
