Who’s Your One – Sermon One Luke 5:17-26
They Had a Mission (17-18)
- We’ve all had a mission in our life at some point (maybe a small task, something that needed to be done that was bugging you, something that you want to do before you die (not a bucket list) but meaning full things you wanted to accomplish)
- Illustration of Lanny’s before next 20 year list…what would be on your list?...
- On this day Jesus was preaching and a crowd was gather (scribes/Pharisees).
- Luke also notes the power to was in him to heal that day.
- Two groups those trying to dissect his ministry and those who just wanted to be healed.
- These men aren’t concerned with everything Jesus is doing, they just want their friend to be healed.
- So they bring him to Jesus…This was their mission.
- What’s your mission? What are you striving for? Do you have dreams that our bigger then you?
They Took A Risk and trusted God To Do What Only God Could Do (19-20, 24b)
- Upon arriving they face an obstacle...
- They can’t get in because of the crowds…what do they do (wait till he comes out…come back the next day?
- No, the get up on the roof and drop their friend through the roof into the midst of Jesus.
- What obstacles are standing in your way? What things are derailing you from doing what God has called you to do?
- I think we can safely say that they are taking a risk here. Luke doesn’t tell us who’s home this is…but these guys didn’t care.
- They want their friend to walk and be healed and they are willing to risk it.
-
- They are risking that Jesus will do something…anything.
- I don’t know that they are expecting Jesus to forgive this man of his sins.
- I think more than anything they have seen or heard of the power of Jesus and they want their friend to walk.
- So they drop him through the roof before Jesus, they trusted that Jesus will do something.
- I think sometimes we approach the salvation of those who are close to us and far from God with hope, but not with trust. We hope that God will do something but we don’t trust that He will do what only He can do.
- They had an expectation that something would happen, and that expectation moved them to do something.
- Do you have an expectation? Does it move you to do something?
- In V24, he does what they trusted only he could do. He heals their friend.
They Received More Than They Expected (21-26)
- After the man is lowered in to the roof, Jesus pronounces that His sins have been forgiven.
- You can imagined that heads jerked and eyes bulged…the scribes and Pharisees see this as blasphemous…”Who can forgive sins but God alone.”
- Jesus perceives their thoughts and responds to what is going on in their minds.
- Jesus forgives the man’s sins before he heals him physically…Jesus dealt with his primary need first.
- Our greatest need is that our hard hearts will be softened and God would save us.
- After forgiving this man’s sins, Jesus tells him to get up and walk…and that’s exactly what he did.
- Luke says the man left and went home…”glorifying God.”
- V27 they were all filled with “awe and glorified God.”
- We have seen extraordinary things…the most extraordinary thing I have ever seen in my life is the power of God to day in and day out continually save broken human beings through the redemptive work of Christ.
“Don’t settle for the mundane when God is offering the miraculous”
Jason Gaston
- Have you experienced life changing transformation that only God can bring?
- If so, do you not long that God would do the same for others?
