Prayer

Prayer
Ask about their prayer life
What works
What doesn’t work
ACTS Model and how it is unique to show the various areas in which you can pray, not just supplication
Adoration
Praising God for who he is. Acknowledging the things you love about Him, his character and the world he created.
Confession
Telling God the truth. Confession and repentance are crucial aspects of our prayer life.
Thankfulness
Thanking God for whatever you are thankful for. Breath, Friends, Life, Family, Job, whatever
Supplication
Making your requests known to God. Telling Him what you need and asking for provision. This is the most common thoughts of Prayer but its only one part.

Fasting

Fasting is an act of worship. When we fast we are telling God he alone is our source, He alone is our Provider, our Sustainer.
Fasting is a purposeful withholding of something in order to gain a better reliance on God
Story about friend fasting while he was struggling (Taylor)
Sexual sin and fasting as a wonderful weapon against it.
Fasting from food shows our commitment to God as our provider, we really need four things to live, food, water, air, and God. Can’t really fast from Air, and water is incredibly drastic, so food is the best thing to show that devotion
Joel 2:12 Even now declares the Lord return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.
Before Paul and Barnabas were sent out they fasted. Acts 13:3-4 So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off. The two of them, sent on their way by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus
Fast based decision making
Fasting from other things aside from food (TV social media)
Regularly fasting, not just for Men’s Encounter and Restore but trying to find time too fast yourself.
Greg Tipton story about fasting for his partners on Friday
My story of fasting quarterly from various things, Soda, Social Media, Video Games, etc. and making fasting something as easy to do as praying.

Reading/Studying the Bible

Begin with https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUXJ8Owes8E&list=PLH0Szn1yYNedn4FbBMMtOlGN-BPLQ54IH&index=3
That was a great summary of the literary styles of the bible. I would highly recommend going through the other videos of that series on how to read the bible as well.
Now why do you guys think it is important that we know each type of literary style when studying the Bible? (1ish minute for response)
Why would it be important for us as campus ministers to know the various types of styles when teaching our students how to read the Bible? (1ish minute for response)
Respond to those answers.
Context and why it’s important.
So to begin with.

Studying The Bible

1. Narrative 43%
What is narrative? A narrative simply put is a story, it has a setting, a plot, characters and usually follows an arch of (drawing) opening -> conflict -> rising intensity -> climax -> resolution -> ending.
Why are stories so ingrained into our souls?
Historical Narrative, Parable Narrative, Biographical Narrative
2. Poetry 33%
Psalm 1 example and how it tells us to read our Bible.
Chapter by chapter and how to read each of these and study them.
Trying to read poetry as narrative going to have a hard time, same with the reverse of everything.
3. Discourse 24%
What is discourse? It is a presentation of language in its entirety, while performing an intellectual inquiry in a particular area or field. Paul used this a lot.
Understanding keywords, therefor, so that, etc.
4. Studying the Bible vs. Reading the Bible
More time
Different fruit
What the Bible is trying to say, not necessarily what Holy Spirit is doing in you (though they can overlap)

Reading the Bible

SOAP (Active Reading of the Bible) Ask for people to explain the various letters. (1 minute response)
1. Scripture
The piece of scripture you are looking to dive into.
2. Observation
The tiny part of studying scripture in the reading of your Bible, where in the story are you? What did you notice about God/God’s character, or about this story in particular?
Ezra-Nehemiah Example, and Job Example
3. Application
How does this work in your life? Really what is a good response from you to what the Bible is saying? What is holy spirit doing through you after reading this particular scripture?
Lev 13 Example
Just built a new computer how can I praise God through that? Not just for it but through it?
4. Prayer
Go back through ACTS and see which is most applicable to what you just read.
