Part Four—“The Believers Senior Partner”

One Plus One = ?

Acts 3:1-10 (read later)

We have been talking about the believer’s senior partner

      The Holy Spirit

We have looked at our partnership with Him

We have talked about our prayer partner

                  And our guide…in life

Today I want to talk about our partner in lifestyle giving!

What happens when you and I link up with God?

..."One Plus One may equal two in the world of mathematics but One plus one does not equal two -- It doesn't double, it multiplies -- it compounds tremendously  when you and I link up in partnership with God.

I begin this message with a story of the man who may have been used more than any other person in the nineteenth century for God--He was a layman, not an ordained minister--His name was D.L. Moody,

The words of a man by the name of Mr. Henry Varley, in Dublin, Ireland...changed D.L. Moody's life...

"The world has yet to see what God will do with and for and through and in and by the man, who is fully consecrated to Him."

D.L. Moody heard those words!

Now let me tell y o the story...

Dwight L. Moody is a great example of a person whose availability was greater than their ability.

He is a picture of what happens when a person links up with God and they become partners---He was born in 1837 in Northridge Mass.

A very poor family---his dad passed away at the age of 41--leaving D.L. Moody and his brothers and sisters and Mother in terrible poverty...so poor that the creditors came and took away everything the family had...including the firewood...all they had left were the clothes on their back.  And their mother taking them to church and Sunday School...Their  mother didn't want them to wear out their shoes and socks so when they went to church she would have them go barefoot until they came within sight of the church and then they would put on the shoes that they had been carrying to church...

D.L. Moody; out of this incredibly poor background became a successful businessman...one of the top shoe salesmen in the east...in fact he was lead to the Lord in the back of a shoe store...by a Sunday School teacher by the name of Mr. Kimbal...

...D.L. Moody you must understand was probably the most powerfully influential man for God...and a layman...in the nineteenth century.  D.L. Moody shared the gospel of Jesus Christ with over 100 million people.  Can you imagine the reward of that SS teacher, Mr. Kimbal???  Who in the back of a shoe store lead D.L. Moody to Christ?

Moody immediately became interested in the church and wanted to join the church---he was so illiterate,  I mean, he was so...unknowledgeable about the ways of the church...I mean...Well...he was so bad, that he flunked his membership class!

I don't know if you have ever tried out for membership in church...but you can't flunk that!

But he was so bad he flunked it.

The second year he applied, they let him join, but they basically said that though they allowed him to join they said that he was still basically illiterate about the things of God.

And then he surprised them all by announcing that at the age of 30 he wanted to sell his business and just work for God full time as a layman...

they were shocked!  They discouraged him.  They didn't want him to do that.

In fact.  He got up to speak in his local church and when it was over one of the deacons came up to him and said, "I think you can best serve God by remaining silent the rest of your life."

another one walked up to him and said, "Mr. Moody, you have offended me with your poor grammar."  D.L. Moody looked back and said, "I realize my grammar is very poor."  He said to the man,” You seem to have good grammar don't you?"  and the man said, "Yes, I have very good grammar."

And Moody looked at him and asked, "What are you doing for God?"

Message complete!

He was in Dublin Ireland when he heard again the words of Henry Varley...He was sitting on a bench in a public park...

"the world is yet to see what God will do with and for and through and in and by the man who is fully consecrated to God!"

And now I quote form his autobiography...the response of D.L. Moody that day when he heard those words:

"He said a man.  He did not say a great man, a learned man, a smart man; he just simply said a man.  I am a man.  And it lies within me whether I will or will not make this full consecration to God."

And then D.L. Moody said,” I will do my best to be that man"

One Plus One doesn't equal two when you and I link up as partners with God.

Now here is a great story!!  Are you ready???  ACTS 3:1-12

From this story of Peter and John we discover eight things about the kind of people God loves to partner with!

Are you ready?  fasten you seat belt!

1.People who are doing the right things – v.1

What are Peter and John doing?  It is the time for the regular prayer service at the temple (3:00 PM)—they are doing the right thing!  They are being faithful to do what they know to do in service to God in their regular everyday lives!

You may ask how God can use you and bless your life and make your life a life of greater significance…

One of the deepest desires of the human life is to be significant

To do something in your life that will matter—make a difference.

Greater than the desire for money, wealth, power, prestige or fame is the need for significance…

The need to be used by God to do something of eternal worth and value…

Well friend you must start by doing the right things right where you are...start being obedient and faithful right now right here and don't wait for something bigger and better...

Do the small stuff faithfully...And then God will bring the right people and right circumstances and right resources together so that you can have the right ministry that God wants you to have...

God is not looking for superman—he is looking for any man

God is not looking for wonder woman—he is looking for any woman

God blesses people who just do the right things day in and day out...they are not doing the sensational things or the bold and extravagant...they just serve God faithfully day in and day out and God sees that faithful service and says, I am going to use them; I am going to bless them and make them a blessing.

Peter & John are doing the right things...

Who are the people God loves to partner with -- to give through

1. People who are doing the right things—regularly!

2.   These are people who are willing to be interrupted.

God uses people who love people...He uses people who love people more than anything else in life...and so they are willing in their busy schedule to be interrupted...

Willing to be “put out” so someone might be “put in”…

Look at vs. 2-3

Do you get the picture?  Peter and John are about to get to the door of the prayer meeting...when this guy starts calling out to them.

In other words--they are being interrupted!

“Interruptions can be viewed as sources of irritation or opportunities for service, as moments lost or experience gained, as time wasted or horizons widened. They can annoy us or enrich us, get under our skin or give us a shot in the arm, monopolize our minutes or spice our schedules, depending on our attitude toward them.” – William A. Ward (as quoted by John Maxwell)

Friends, God uses people who walk slowly through the crowds!

God uses people who put people first!!!

And by the way--in case it is a new thought for some of us:  Jesus died for people...

But, have you ever felt like Charlie Brown?:  "I love mankind.  its people I can't stand."

God uses people who love people...

And that is why they are willing to be interrupted.

But not only that...

3.   God partners with people who pay attention to needs.  v.4

"They fixed their gaze upon him..."

In other words...all of a sudden, this man who was clamoring for attention...they stopped, they were interrupted, and they looked upon him...and immediately they saw his need...

This is important!  It is in your notes:  "Givers are not people with less need than others.  They are people who believe it is more blessed to give than to receive."

You see givers have needs also...If anybody would have stopped Peter and John and asked if they had some needs they would have said sure...

But givers never concentrate on themselves they concentrate on others...

And in so doing...they do some incredible things.

Now imagine with me some of the things Peter and John could have said when this guy interrupts their most holy schedule…

"you know what...we would love to help you sir,… but ...well, we are going to church...”

Listen-- If our prayers don't have hands and feet to them...if our prayer doesn't include a desire to be part of the answer then I will maintain that it is not a true legitimate prayer...it is a cop-out and an excuse!

Now, can't you see Peter and John saying...Now I know you have a need..."Bless you!"   We will go pray for you!

Sometimes the last thing people need is for us to “say” we are going to go off and prayer for them...what they need is for a praying Christian to stop...be willing to be interrupted...and do what they can to meet their need....sometimes that may be as simple as listening to someone's heart...taking time!!!!

Sometimes their need is to even what they think it is—but by God’s Holy Spirit we can be directed to address the real—hidden need of the human heart---deeper than alms, or even healing!

      The need for wholeness

They could have said...when this guy bothers them...they could have said..."Why is it that every time we come to church we have to do all the work around here?  HEY BUD!  LOOK AT ALL THESE OTHER PEOPLE AROUND HERE!  WHY DON'T YOU ASK ONE OF THEM!  Why is it that Pete and I have to do everything!"    ...Why can't George do it!

Do you ever feel like you are the only one who is doing anything for God and no one else is interested in doing anything???

And Oh, how Jesus must appreciate you!!!   Except when you go around moaning and groaning about it!!!

I suppose that Peter and John could have let someone else do it!!!

and just gone to church to be blessed and fed...

to be a consumer and not a contributor...

a taker and not a giver

a leaner and not a lifter...

Too many in the church are over-fed and under exercised...

Most of us are educated way beyond the level of our     obedience...

I am so glad that Peter and John didn't look at that need that was presented to them and say...well I have done enough...it is time for someone else to do it...

I am glad that Peter and John were involved... they were givers.

They could have said:  "You know, what a shame for this beggar to be outside this nice new church.  You know he kind of messes up the landscape...isn't it terrible all these needy people around the church..."

You know some people think that the church is just a museum for Christians...where we come and get dusted off every week....Instead of a hospital for sinners

Now fortunately we understand that Colusa Assembly is a hospital for sinners..."I am looking at a whole bunch..."  and you have  a cripple up here preaching...we are all in the same boat!

And we are rowing (and growing) together!

Saved sinners seeking to get other sinners saved

They could have said..."Why is it every time I come to church they ask for money?

Or they could have said..."we come to church to receive spiritual food.  We come to take not to give. We come to get fed…"

Or they could have said..."Well, he is asking for something we don't have.  He wants silver and gold and we don't have any.  So therefore I am not responsible."

They could have said any of these things, but they said none of them because these were givers and partners with God...people who would not limit God by the extent of their own time, talents or resources...or imagination…

NOW...the fourth characteristic of people who God uses...

We don’t have time for the fourth—so this will be continued next week!

God is looking for partners!  He is looking for one man or one woman---one boy or one girl – one teen or one young adult---

who will say yes to God---and not limit Him by their own limitations ---  someone who will give their life to him without reservation!

Who will make the Holy Spirit their Senior Partner in life and in service to God…

"The world has yet to see what God will do with and for and through and in and by the man, who is fully consecrated to Him."

Will you be one who will do that???

Young person!?  Will it be you????

Don’t wait to be qualified!  Do it today!

one + ONE does not equal 2

Not when One is God—it equals an unlimited possibility of significant acts …when we partner with God!

Part Four—“The Believers Senior Partner”

One Plus One = ?

(Part Two)

Review

Story of D.L. Moody—just one man—one regular man who decided to be the man Henry Varley was talking about when he said:

"The world has yet to see what God will do with and for and through and in and by the man, who is fully consecrated to Him." – Henry Varley

What God is looking for in a partner.  Acts 3:1-12

What can we be doing?

How can we become His partners?

How can His power work through us?

So that 1+1 does not equal two—but equal an unlimited array of possibilities—

What God  is looking for in a partner to work with

1. someone who is already doing the right thing

      Acts 3:1  “…on the way to pray…”

2. someone who is willing to be interrupted.  3:2-3

      “…beggar asked for help…”

3. Someone who pays attention to needs—of other people..v4

God is concerned about people

Jesus died for people—People need the Lord!

            Are you concerned about people???

And that brings us to today’s message and the fourth quality to be found in the type of people God is looking to partner with to give Himself to the world…

God so loved that He gave!!!

He gave the very best!  His one and only Son!

He will teach us to be givers too!

4.  People who inspire hope in others  vv. 4-5

They are motivators...And the reason is because whenever they come into the crowd they always have something to pass on...

v.4-5  "...And fixing his eyes on him, with john, Peter said, "Look at us." So he gave them his attention, (and here it is; listen to this)  expecting to receive something from them."

Here is the person who always contributes in a positive way to their environment—

      Work, school, home,

They are fun to be around!

They are thinking more of others than themselves

Here is a little secret to becoming that kind of person---it will take constant vigilance until it becomes second nature…

“Be more concerned about making others feel good about themselves than you are in making them feel good about you.”—John Maxwell
