Introduction:
1. Last week we discussed being still as it relates to the Old Testament.
Psalm 46:10 NKJV
10 Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!
A. We started with the children of Isreal coming out of the land of Egypt and ending up at the sea with Pharaoh and his army pursuing them.
1. They were scared and allowed their anxieties get the best of them.
Exodus 14:11–12 NKJV
11 Then they said to Moses, “Because there were no graves in Egypt, have you taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you so dealt with us, to bring us up out of Egypt? 12 Is this not the word that we told you in Egypt, saying, ‘Let us alone that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than that we should die in the wilderness.”
2. God answered their anxieties with “There is no reason to worry; be still and know that I am God.”
Exodus 14:13–14 NKJV
13 And Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever. 14 The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.”
3. This would not be the only time that Isreal would allow their anxieties to run away with them, but God would always take care of them.
A. They would hunger and allow their anxieties to get the best of them, but God would take care of them.
Exodus 16:4 NKJV
4 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you. And the people shall go out and gather a certain quota every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in My law or not.
B. They would thirst and allow their anxieties to get the best of them, but God would take care of them.
Exodus 17:4–6 NKJV
4 So Moses cried out to the Lord, saying, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me!” 5 And the Lord said to Moses, “Go on before the people, and take with you some of the elders of Israel. Also take in your hand your rod with which you struck the river, and go. 6 Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.” And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.
C. They would send spies into Canaan to spy out the land and allow their anxieties to get the best of them and it would have severe consequences, but God would take care of them.
Numbers 14:26–29 NKJV
26 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, 27 “How long shall I bear with this evil congregation who complain against Me? I have heard the complaints which the children of Israel make against Me. 28 Say to them, ‘As I live,’ says the Lord, ‘just as you have spoken in My hearing, so I will do to you: 29 The carcasses of you who have complained against Me shall fall in this wilderness, all of you who were numbered, according to your entire number, from twenty years old and above.
2. This principle continues in the New Testament.
A. Christians are not to worry as the rest of the world worries, but be still and know that He is God.
B. Christians are not to sorrow as the rest of the world sorrows, but be still and know that He is God.
C. Christians are not to fear as the rest of the world fears, but be still and know that He is God.
Body:
1. Christians are not to worry as the rest of the world worries, but be still and know that He is God.
A. We are not to worry about our lives.
Matthew 6:25 NKJV
25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?
B. The Gentiles worried about these things.
Matthew 6:32 NKJV
32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
C. Man was to be concerned with God and God would take care of him.
Matthew 6:33 NKJV
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
1. He takes care of the birds.
Matthew 6:26 NKJV
26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?
2. He clothes the grass.
Matthew 6:29–30 NKJV
29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
2. Christians are not to sorrow as the rest of the world sorrows, but be still and know that He is God.
1 Thessalonians 4:13 NKJV
13 But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope.
A. He would go on to tell us why.
1 Thessalonians 4:14–18 NKJV
14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. 15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. 16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.
B. God takes care of those who die in the Lord.
Revelation 14:13 NKJV
13 Then I heard a voice from heaven saying to me, “Write: ‘Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.’ ” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labors, and their works follow them.”
3. Christians are not to fear as the rest of the world fears, but be still and know that He is God.
2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV
7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
A. The world fears death, because they have no hope.
Ephesians 2:12 NKJV
12 that at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.
1. But God takes care of His people, and the blood of Christ gives us hope.
Ephesians 2:13 NKJV
13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
B. The world fears disease, because they fear death and have no hope.
1. Paul saw death as something much better.
Philippians 1:21–23 NKJV
21 For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. 22 But if I live on in the flesh, this will mean fruit from my labor; yet what I shall choose I cannot tell. 23 For I am hard-pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.
C. The world fears persecution, because they don’t have the peace that surpasses understanding to guard their hearts.
Philippians 4:6–7 NKJV
6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
1. But God tells us to rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven.
Matthew 5:11–12 NKJV
11 “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. 12 Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Conclusion:
1. We are to be still and know that He is God.
A. Because He will never leave us nor forsake us.
Hebrews 13:5 NKJV
5 Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
1. He will always be there to be our Helper; therefore, we should not fear what man can do.
Hebrews 13:6 NKJV
6 So we may boldly say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?”
2. Therefore, let us come boldly to the throne of grace to find help in time of need.
Hebrews 4:16 NKJV
16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
