Did You Know?
Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” If one believes these words he won’t find anything in the Bible too difficult. If God created all things, then he controls all things. The passage refutes atheism because God created. It refutes materialism because all matter had a beginning. It refutes humanism because God, not man, is the ultimate reality. It refutes evolutionism because God created all things. All of these “ism’s” simply reflect man’s unbelief.
Genesis 1:1 answers man’s timeless questions: Who? God. What? The heavens and the earth. When? In the beginning. Exactly when that beginning was is a lively debate among scholars. The Genesis creation is unique in all of literature because it begins with God alone creating. When did He create? Genesis 1, 5, and 11 give chronological data from the time of the universe to Abraham. The historical books of the OT give chronological data from Abraham to 100 years after the time the Jews were released from Babylonian captivity (up to 425 BC), and the inter-testamental period lasted about 400 years up to the time of Christ. Using this data, the creation account of Genesis 1:1ff. dates to somewhere around 4000 BC (see also, Luther, Ussher, Kepler, and Galileo). There are, however, some minor gaps in these chronologies, but it’s impossible to insert gaps totaling more than about 5,000 years in these chapters without rendering the record irrelevant. The Bible won’t allow for an earth older than 12,000 years.
While scientific theories change on a daily basis, God’s Word never has. The late Dr. Henry Morris said that currently the annual population growth rate is 2%. It hasn’t always been this high, and it would have to have averaged no more than a quarter of the present rate just to support a 4000 BC origin of man. Evolutionists, however, believe man appeared some three million years ago, but at one quarter of the present population growth rate, the human race would have long ago overpopulated the earth. If the annual 2% growth remained constant for only the next 700 years there would be one person for every square foot on the planet. So imagine what it would be if man began three million years ago! Even if slowed to one tenth of the present 2% rate humans would have died out millennia ago.
The Bible has never changed, and why should it? It contains truth that man’s so-called science has never disproved. In the end, no one knows exactly when God created the universe. Though it cannot be proved, maybe there were millions of years between the days of creation in Genesis 1, but no matter what you read in the newspapers and science books about a recent creation that may have included dinosaurs living among mankind, the Bible continues to stand up to its detractors, and it remains a viable option that reflects sound biblical exegesis and intelligent science.
