Doug Hamilton the preached at Camp Hill Church of Christ, Camp Hill PA a former graduate from SIBI and a well known speaker, teacher throughout the brotherhood regarding spiritual giftedness. His aim in his book it to look biblically at the spiritual gifts as noted in the bible. He defines them, displays them and empowers the church to deploy them for the common good of the body.

13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit. 14 For in fact the body is not one member but many.
(Advance the slide) - All gifted, all to bring their parts for the common good (or profit to all) for the church (see 1Cor12:7)
So how can this series help Westside Church of Christ? it can help us to have the right perspective that we need in together we can grow spiritually, numerically, financially and in service to one another and the community. It is learning the gifts God has given us and learning to grow them, develop them and deploy them. To become a “gift-oriented” church.
There are five functional perspectives that we should keep in mind as we prepare for this series: First E’s of the functional church.

Evangelizing (Mt28:19; Mk16:15)
We know the command given by Jesus
19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,

15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.
The church is commanded to go make disciples, to baptize and to preach the gospel to all creation. As disciples of Jesus Christ we have an awesome opportunity to help lead people to come to Christ and be rescued from a life condemned to hell through the gospel of grace through faith. The stakes are high and we need to help people understand the cost.
28 “For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it?
What is the cost of being a disciple of Jesus Christ? It was Jesus precious life given for you, and you giving your life for Him knowing He through His Word, by His Spirit and through His people will change you from who you were to be who He wants you to be.
I had an instructor in school who would say time and time again it is “salvation through education” - We need to help people not to just know they are sinners and Jesus died for theirs but the depravity of sin, the consequences of sin and the new life comes with changes that are both physical and spiritual
Evaluating
IF we are honest we judge, or we evaluate things and people without good investigation at times.
How we see things, how we look at things, how we evaluate things will be different since we come from different perspectives and ways.
The person who has compassion, mercy will view things different than the one who is a teacher or has an analytical mind.
Evaluating is important so you can meet people where they are at and understand where they are at and that they are not you nor are like you, nor you like them. When we keep that in mind we have a better opportunity to be unified.
While there is One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism, One God and Father there is only one body, and One Spirit (paraphrase of Eph4:4-6) - the Spirit gifts us to be used for the common good (1Cor12:7) so, we need not try to put a round peg in a square hole, we are not cookie cutter Christians.
Educating (1Tim4:16; Hos4:6)
I mentioned “salvation through education” a few minutes ago.
I think we can agree that education is important, Paul instructed timothy regarding it
16 Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in these things, for as you do this you will ensure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you.
To Hosea there was a great warning given
6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being My priest. Since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.
Education would be great if it was only things we thought were simple, easy and took little or no effort.
Learning, developing and growing in the a gift-oriented way will take effort.
In you work book you will read about preachers styles
The Mercy giver style preacher
The hell-fire and brimstone preacher
The evangelism preachers
And the teaching preachers
We need to have a balance of all of these to feed the congregation, I hopefully mix it up enough. But we need a variety, a balance of gifts too, even when we need to learn, develop and deploy them since some may not just come naturally.
Encouraging (1The5:11; Heb10:24)
Interesting word, easy definition: To encourage is to put courage in.
11 Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing.
We are to do it, to encourage one another
24 Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works.
We are to look for ways to encourage, to motivate one another. Part of this series is to motivate you to come to know, develop and deploy your spiritual gifts.
We need to come to know each others language, how to effectively speak to them. The administrator, the mercy giver have different ways of being encouraged, so we know personally and come to know as a church so we can grow as a church.
Our last one for tonight then will give you some instructions for what to do before we meet again, yep, believe it or not, homework.
Equipping (1Sam17:38-40; Eph4:12)
12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ;
We need to be properly equipped so to accomplish God’s will. David in 1Sam17:38-40 was preparing to face Goliath and King Saul wanted to offer him his armor, which did not fit, it was not the proper equipment for David.
We too need to learn the proper equipment for ourselves and what we can bring to help properly equip the body too. and empowering the church in a gift-oriented way,
Remember there is a variety of gifts for one body!
4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. 6 There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons.

7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

Gift-oriented mindset

The question there is what does it mean to be gift-oriented in one’s mind-set?
Discuss before a few minutes before putting up next slide
To see yourself, to see others in a new perspective, not through the physical world, but through the spiritual
To have this mindset it can be deployed to lead others to understand the value of Christ and to lead them to obey the gospel.
This mindset helps the overall growth and development of the congregation too.
OK, maybe we did not get too much into these each, but you will see this when you read chapter 1 of the book and read through chapter 1 of the workbook that covers much of what we have discussed tonight.
