The oil.
Matthew 25:1–13 NKJV
1 “Then the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Now five of them were wise, and five were foolish. 3 Those who were foolish took their lamps and took no oil with them, 4 but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. 5 But while the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept. 6 “And at midnight a cry was heard: ‘Behold, the bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him!’ 7 Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps. 8 And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ 9 But the wise answered, saying, ‘No, lest there should not be enough for us and you; but go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.’ 10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding; and the door was shut. 11 “Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us!’ 12 But he answered and said, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, I do not know you.’ 13 “Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.
The distinction is between the wise and foolish. The wise were prepared for the coming wedding party with oil on their lampstands, and a reserve of oil.
Oil was considered a necessity of life. Oil was valuable in its uses.
burning oil was used to light a path.
oil was used for heat.
oil was used as a perfume.
oil was used to polish items of value that had become dusty.
In the parable of the good Samaritan the oil was used as a healing agent poured into the wounds of the man found on the road.
Oil was used by servants when a traveler or guest came into a home. They were to massage the oil onto their feet. Refreshing them from their journey.
People of the east did not go anywhere without oil. They would rub it onto their exposed skin to protect them from the elements, sun, wind, sand.
Oil through out scripture represents the Spirit of God, the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.
God used oil because it was a common item that no one would not have access to.
Notice again that the parable is about those who had and those who did not have the oil.
Romans 8:9 NKJV
9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.
You need the baptism of the Holy Spirit. You need the oil. It’s not just so you make it inside with the wedding party.
The Holy Spirit will give you light in the dark times.
The Holy Spirit will give you heat in a cold season.
The Holy Spirit will make it smell sweeter when life stinks.
The Holy Spirit take the grime off your life and bring a shine back to something of value that just appears worn out.
The Holy Spirit will heal the wounds life gives you.
The Holy Spirit is for your rest and refreshing. Is 28:12 “This is the rest with which You may cause the weary to rest,” And, “This is the refreshing”; Yet they would not hear.”
Isaiah 28:12 NKJV
12 To whom He said, “This is the rest with which You may cause the weary to rest,” And, “This is the refreshing”; Yet they would not hear.
The Holy Spirit will be your protection from the harsh elements of life.
Story of the ship and the oil.
When the waves are crashing, the storm is too much and you think your boat is about to sink. Start praying, put some oil on the water to calm the rough seas.
