Prayer

Mark 1:35–39 ESV
And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed. And Simon and those who were with him searched for him, and they found him and said to him, “Everyone is looking for you.” And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.” And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.

Introduction

John the Baptist
Message: Repent for the forgiveness of sins
Jesus ordination (if you will) and baptism
His message: Repent and believe the Gospel
Christ’s healing ministry
Brings glory to God
Heals in ways we don’t expect
Heals wonderfully
Heals so as to promote repentence and faith
Today we learn of his two main priorities - prayer and preaching
Every fact of Jesus life should be deeply interesting to Christians. Two of his habits are of significance to us here: prayer and preaching

Jesus Prayer Habits (vv.35, 36)

Prayer connects us to the Father
Refresh and encourage us
The day prior was a taxing day - exorcism and healing
Prepare for what faces us
This we must do to fulfill all righteousness
As God we pray to Jesus
As man, Jesus prays to God
Early and private
He prayed often and about everything
praying while baptized
prayed when he went on the mount of transfiguration with Moses and Elijah
prayed all night when He chose His apostles
prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane
He stayed in Communion with the Father
Personal devotions and praying are important
Many reasons you would think He did not need prayer, but He prayed because He wants His followers to pray and it is a way he stays in communion with the Father
If He felt the need to pray, shouldn’t we?
What about people who don’t pray, in light of this passage?
Many Christians who dont pray - don’t speak one word to God - can they really be Christians - cannot say so
If our Master prays, we must pray.
We are adopted into Christ’s family - we must call upon Him
Prayerless=Christless, Godless, and on the road to destruction
Little Time for prayer?
Must expect little
Don’t seek the mind of Christ
Few prayers - little grace, strength, peace or hope
We must pay attention to prayer - it is the measure of our faith
measure of our relationship with God
Robust prayer - growth in Christ
little/no prayer - backsliding
We must seek our quiet place and pray often

The Call to Preach (vv 37-39)

Jesus is focused on the mission - why He came! Preaching repentance and the Good News!
Though His home is in Galilee, He must move on!
Jesus is calling out His people!
Some will believe, some won’t, but its important that they get the message - He is a Preacher and Teacher
Way back in Deuteronomy (18:15) “prophet greater than Moses
Left heaven and glory to take on the form of a man and preach
One principal part of his work on earth, was to go up and down and publish glad tidings, to offer healing to the broken-hearted, light to them that sat in darkness, and pardon to the chief of sinners, “Therefore,” He says, “came I forth.”
Ryle, J. C. (1859). Expository Thoughts on Mark (p. 19). London: William Hunt.
The Lord honors the office of preacher - His own Son was one
Could have been an earthly priest or king, but came as a lowly preacher.
His work was to preach - Therefore, came I forth
The office of preacher is important and honorable
Sermons more important than sacraments/ordinances (but we should observe them) - nothing is more important than preaching
Preaching established the Church of Christ
Preaching showed us our sins and pointed to the way of salvation
Preaching is how the heathens are saved
Don’t ridicule preachers (look at Hollywood)
Missionaries are so important
Open air preachers are vital to Christ’s mission
This is Christ’s vocation, even though He was King of Kings and Lord of Lords
He spent three years, preaching
in houses,
on a mountainside,
in synagogues
in a boat
always preaching and teaching- therefore came I forth

Bringing it home

Prayer
brings us closer to God - keeps us close
Gives us strength, grace, wisdom, guidance
1 Thess 5:20
1 Thessalonians 5:20 ESV
Do not despise prophecies,
Prophesying is preaching -
Sermons may be weak or poor
Preacher may not be highly gifted
Preaching is God’s grand command for converting and saving people
The Gospel is the very weapon the Son of God was not ashamed to employ.
Therefore, Came I forth!
