September 12, 2021

“Then Peter said in reply, ‘See, we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?” Matthew 19:27

I. Leaving and following for the sake of the gospel. (vs 28)

1. We have left “everything.”

2. We…have “followed you.”

“I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel….” Galatians 1:6

II. Giving for the sake of the gospel. (vs 29-30)

1. Giving of homes and family.

2. Rejection by family and loosing homes.

3. All authentic disciples have Jesus first and serve Him.

Acts 2:42

Romans 12:5

4. An authentic disciple gives all of himself and all that is his to meet the needs of a desperate world.

III. Be last to be first for the sake of the gospel. (vs 30-31)

Mark 10:21

2 Corinthians 5:10

Faith Sheet:

1. How do churchgoing Christians sometimes make it look like our faith walk is based on what we do? How can we change this perception?

2. Why did Jesus make this particular demand of the rich young ruler? What demand might He make of you? (What is your identity? What is your savior?)

3. Is wealth evidence of God’s favor? How can it also be an impediment to salvation? What determines your opinion about money: your culture or the Bible and how do you know?

4. Are there some people who have the gift of managing money for the kingdom and others who do not? What are the characteristics of this gift? Do you have the gift?

5. Is it wrong to seek a reward? How is the reward of discipleship better than anything the world has to offer?

6. Why did Jesus mention “persecutions” (v. 30) among the rewards of discipleship? Does this kind of disclosure seem like a good policy for evangelism? Pray for someone to know the risen Christ.
