Defining Spiritual Gifts

Focus today (pgs. 11-19 workbook)
To understand differences between miraculous and spiritual gifts
To understand the contrasts between spiritual gifts
Two types of gifts:
Doron: Gifts given to demonstrate honor (Mt2:11)
Matthew 2:11 NASB95
11 After coming into the house they saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell to the ground and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
Two types of gifts.
Doron: Gifts given to demonstrate honor (Mt2:11)
Charisma: Gifts given to receive honor back (2Tim1:6; 1Tim1:14; 1Pt4:10)
2 Timothy 1:6 NASB95
6 For this reason I remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
1 Timothy 4:14 NASB95
14 Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was bestowed on you through prophetic utterance with the laying on of hands by the presbytery.
1 Peter 4:10 NASB95
10 As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
Charisma easily defined: a passionate endowment and quality or a miraculous faculty and power
1 Corinthians 12:4–6 (NASB95)
4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. 6 There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons.

Defining the Miraculous gifts

1 Corinthians 12:8–9 (NASB95)
8 For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,
1 Corinthians 12:10–11 (NASB95)
10 and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.

2.The Word of Knowledge: (Act4:13)
3.Faith:
4.Healing:
5.Miracles:
6.Prophecy:
7.Discerning of spirits:
8.Tongues:
9.Interpretation of Tongues:
Early application of Miraculous gifts
•Holy Spirit gave the apostles the words to speak
•The apostles appear to be the only ones who had the 9 miraculous gifts
•The fulfillment of the ceasing of the gifts is shown in 1Cor13:8-10
1 Corinthians 13:8–10 (NASB95)
8 Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part; 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away.

The Non-Miraculous Gifts

Romans 12:6–8 (NASB95)
6 Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith; 7 if service, in his serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching; 8 or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

Gaining a basic understanding
It is possible to have passion in all the gifts, but all the gifts are not equal in passion.
It is possible to have developed talent associated with a gift, but talent is not passion
It is possible to have joy with one, but still have responsibility in all the other Christian responsibilities.
