How Desperate Are You to See Lives Transformed?

Paul - Timothy

1 Corinthians 9:19–23 (NIV)
19 Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. 20 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. 21 To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. 23 I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.
I wonder if we have this same attitude?
How desperate are you to see lives transformed?
Acts 16:1–5 NIV
Paul came to Derbe and then to Lystra, where a disciple named Timothy lived, whose mother was Jewish and a believer but whose father was a Greek. The believers at Lystra and Iconium spoke well of him. Paul wanted to take him along on the journey, so he circumcised him because of the Jews who lived in that area, for they all knew that his father was a Greek. As they traveled from town to town, they delivered the decisions reached by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem for the people to obey. So the churches were strengthened in the faith and grew daily in numbers.
History says Timothy was in his Early 20’s
So, you’re in your 20’s and God says you need to be circumcised.....hmmm…are you sure, Paul?
Why Would Paul Want Timothy Circumcised?
Not necessary for salvation
Galatians 6:15 NIV
15 Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is the new creation.
It was so that he would have credibility with the people!
I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some.
So, my question today: how desperate are you to see lives transformed?
God is in the business of transforming lives, and He wants to use you.
Matthew 28:19–20 NIV
19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
I heard one time that whenever you see a “therefore” you have to ask: what is the therefore there for?
lets look at verse 18
Matthew 28:18 NIV
18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
So, Jesus starts by saying He has all authority on heaven and earth. He is speaking with the complete authority of God the trinity in this moment....
Matthew 28:19–20 NIV
19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
So what are you called to do?
To go and make disciples.....and to teach them all that Jesus commanded.
Now, more specifically, what has God called you to do?
Romans 12:1 NIV
1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.
So, offer your body as a living sacrifice....constantly laying your life down for the cause of Christ....
How?
Romans 12:2 NIV
2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Be transformed daily by the renewing of your mind.
How do you be transformed by the renewing of your:
Spend time daily with Jesus - prayer, meditation, studying scripture
Go to Church - spend time with other believers worshiping, encouraging, challenging, learning, growing
Be the Church - serve Jesus - in your house, in your job, with your friends, in your hobbies. And, in your Church!
You can make disciples anywhere - literally, anywhere where other people are!
Several years ago when I wasn't pastoring, I went to a bar to shoot pool with a guy and build a relationship with him.
Over time, I shared Jesus with him. By the grace of God, and through the power of the Holy Spirit, he asked me a to baptize him a couple years after hanging out in a bar with him and drinking a beer with him. - side note - I did not get drunk, and I was not serving as a pastor.
Even though you can make disciples anywhere, the most common place this happens is in church!
Just curious: by a show of hands, how many of you here are Christians because someone, at some point, invited or made you go to church?
More common than not, people come to know Jesus because of the Church!
Romans 12:3–8 (NIV)
3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. 4 For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.
Remember, Paul is writing this letter to the church in Rome…it is a letter to the Church - to me and to you!
So, what is God calling me to do?
Be a living sacrifice for Jesus
Be transformed by the renewing of your mind
Make disciples of all nations and teaching them to obey what God has commanded
Serve the Church
So, what are some opportunities that you have to serve in our church?
Go over them!
