Hymn 108) - Come Christians Join to Sing
Hymn (4) - How Great Thou Art
Hymn (58) - This is My Father’s World
Decisions determine destinies.
The road a person chooses marks the course of his or her life, not only for the present but for eternity that follows.
Psalm 1 differentiates between these two paths of life. One road leads to blessing, the other to cursing; one to salvation, the other to destruction.
There are only two roads in life—the way of the godly and the way of the ungodly—and they lead to two opposite destinies—one to life, the other to death.
What a fantastic way to open up a book in the bible. (no fence riding allowed).
Psalm 1:1–3 ESV
1 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; 2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
Psalm 1:4–6 ESV
4 The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. 5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; 6 for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
The Way of the Godly (1:1–3)
SUPPORTING IDEA: The godly ones are abundantly blessed because they do not live according to the sinful philosophies, practices, or associations of fallen men but are deeply rooted in God's Word.
What does He not do? (1)
First word in the book (esher) - blessed / happy (named Asher) (leah’s maidservant zilpah)
Genesis 30:13 ESV
13 And Leah said, “Happy am I! For women have called me happy.” So she called his name Asher.
Happy if…(WALK, STAND, SIT)
Don’t WALK - He refuses the worldview that places man at the center of the universe and entices him to live by his own standards of morality and pursuits of pleasure.
Don’t STAND - This infers that his personal behavior resists the lure of the crowd to participate in their carnal activities and sensual living.
Don’t SIT - “bad company corrupts good character” (1 Cor. 15:33).
This is what he doesn’t do…well what does he do?
What does he do? (2)
He takes in God’s Word.
Day and Night (Merism) (high and low, day and night)
There may be no better way to do that than by singing. it gets stuck there.
HYMN (514) - IN MY HEART THERE RINGS A MELODY
What does that do for him? (3)
It will sustain you and nourish you.
Man does not live on bread alone, but on ever word that proceeds from the mouth of God.
Hymn - The Solid Rock (404) - capo 1 or 2
Hymn - Trust and Obey (349)
Hymn - Standing on the Promises (271)
The Way of the Ungodly (1:4–6)
SUPPORTING IDEA: By contrast, the person who lives without God is morally corrupt and will be condemned and damned forever.
prayer for unbelievers (popcorn prayer)
Hymn - Love Lifted Me (505)
