Introduction

After His baptism and trial in the wilderness, Jesus begins His earthly ministry
Preaching and healing
The kingdom of Heaven is at hand. Repent and believe the Gospel
Today:
Good ministers and bad ones
Enthusiasm for Christ and the world
Pray
Mark 3:13–21 NASB95
And He went up on the mountain and summoned those whom He Himself wanted, and they came to Him. And He appointed twelve, so that they would be with Him and that He could send them out to preach, and to have authority to cast out the demons. And He appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom He gave the name Peter), and James, the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James (to them He gave the name Boanerges, which means, “Sons of Thunder”); and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Zealot; and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Him. And He came home, and the crowd gathered again, to such an extent that they could not even eat a meal. When His own people heard of this, they went out to take custody of Him; for they were saying, “He has lost His senses.”

In this text:
Jesus chooses 12 men, 11 of whom will become His apostles
Very important text for our benefit - who ministers to us with the Word is important
These men became instrumental in proclaiming Christ to the world
they were from diverse backgrounds, but not kings and rich men
At the end - The world misunderstood Jesus zeal, enthusiasm and sense of urgency

#1 Jesus Calls His Apostles

Mark 3:13-19 “And He went up on the mountain and summoned those whom He Himself wanted, and they came to Him. And He appointed twelve, so that they would be with Him and that He could send them out to preach, and to have authority to cast out the demons. And He appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom He gave the name Peter), and James, the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James (to them He gave the name Boanerges, which means, “Sons of Thunder”); and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Zealot; and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Him.”
Six who’s first call to follow Christ is recorded in the Bible: Peter, Andrew, James, John, Philip, Matthew
Were converted and saved before they were ordained - “first converted, then ordained”
Pattern for ministers of the Gospel, first step to be called by the Spirit, then set apart for teaching - first converted, then ordained.
Immensely important to the Christian faith, Elders can never be too strict in vetting candidates for the ministry
Unconverted minister is unfit for office
Never experienced God’s grace
How can he commend the Saviour to people, he himself only knows Him by name?
How can he preach the need for new birth and salvation if he has not experienced it?
Parents who urge ministry on children to make a good living or gain respectability are misguided
They will say what is not true-take the Lord’s name in vain
Nothing as damaging as an unsaved minister-does service to unbelievers, Satan, offends God

#2 The Office of Apostle and the Minister in Christ’s Church

Mark 3:14-15 “And He appointed twelve, so that they would be with Him and that He could send them out to preach, and to have authority to cast out the demons.”
Nature of the office:
be with Christ - to live with Him, learn from Him
sent forth to preach - spread the Gospel
power to heal sicknesses
cast out demons
No such thing as “apostolic succession”
Apostles were a model to ministers, for teaching and preaching, but apostles taught infallibly had power to do miracles.
This passage gives good info on how to identify a faithful pastor/minister
Close communion with God - with Him
Fellowship with the Son - abide in Him, spend time with Jesus, not the world
Study, copy Him, drink in His Spirit, walk in His steps
1 John 1:3 “what we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ.”
Must be a preacher
Most important part of His work, more important than sacraments/reading of forms
non-preaching minister - lighthouse without a lamp, silent trumpeter, sleeping watchman, a painted fire
Be a comforter
Cannot heal the sick, help to understand illness
Comforter, counsellor, peacemaker, helper, friend
Must be known as a servant, not a master
Oppose every work of Satan
Cannot cast out demons/evil spirits
Must resist all of Satan - promote holiness
Must oppose sin - gambling, drunkenness, profaning the Sabbath, adultery and fornication
resist temptations
Ministers must be ready to confront Satan at every point.

#3 The World’s view of the Godly man - He must be crazy!

Mark 3:20-21 “And He came home, and the crowd gathered again, to such an extent that they could not even eat a meal. When His own people heard of this, they went out to take custody of Him; for they were saying, “He has lost His senses.””
The world misunderstands the spiritual
Challenge the status quo/conventional wisdom - they called Him crazy
Virtually all the prophets were called mad or crazy
Paul was called mad by the Roman governor Festus
Many who are enthusiastic and committed to Christianity are called crazy, religious nutters, loonies.
Faith - sign of a weak mind - Opiate of the masses
People enthusiastic and committed to science, money, war, business, are well respected. Diligent, expert.
Things of the Spirit are foolishness to the natural man
It should not shake our faith, if we have to suffer the same shame as our Lord - no new thing
Unconverted men are unreasonable. Jesus knows the bitterness of our trials - will give us help
1 Corinthians 2:14 NASB95
But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.

Bringing it home

Bear with the cruelty and unreasonableness of the unsaved, just as Jesus did
Let us pity their blindness and ignorance - we must love them
Let us pray that God changes their hearts - he can and often does
These people may one day become new creatures, see everything differently, follow Christ
Do you think us crazy? How do you deal with what the Bible teaches? Do you deny that you are dead in your trespasses and sins? If so, Christ cannot help. He died because of those sins, and if you turn from them and follow Him, He will change your life. If you have questions about this, see me after class.
