Promises of God – His Forgiveness
For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.” 1 Corinthians 1:20.
Ephesians 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
Does God promise to forgive us?
1. 2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
a. Often seen as a call to revival but let’s not overlook the evidence of His forgiveness, and…
2. Psalm 103:8-12 The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. 9 He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever. 10 He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. 11 For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. 12 As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.
a. You will not fear Him unless you first believe that HE is.
b. Isaiah 43:25
3. Jeremiah 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
a. This is a future event, a prophecy if you will.
b. Jeremiah 50:20
c. Romans 11:26-27
4. Luke 15:3-7 And he spake this parable unto them, saying, 4 What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it? 5 And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing. 6 And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost. 7 I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.
a. After all, Jesus said, “I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” Mark 2:17. The call is still to repentance.
b. Life is hard and the world we live in is a wicked place. Imagine a wounded soldier coming in from battle seeking the forgiveness of his CO for getting wounded. Now instead – picture the Father of the prodigal son.
c. We don’t repent in order to receive forgiveness – We repent because we have been forgiven. The forgiveness according to the riches of his grace;
5. Acts 10:43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.
a. And yet, without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin – thus being the Lamb of God, Christ had to die.
6. 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
a. He, (GOD) is faithful and just. It is imperative that we believe this. If He is not faithful, we cannot trust Him. If we cannot trust Him, how shall the just live by faith?
Does God promise to forgive us? Numbers 23:19 God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?
It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is they faithfulness. Lamentation 3:22-23.
