Significance— it shows us the continuity of God’s plans from the beginning until today.

gospel according to Moses
Place and Plan for God to dwell with His people— today believers are God’s dwelling place so the details of Tabernacle apply to each of us as His temple
shadows, types and symbols used by the Israelites that depict future events
Heb 8:1-5 “Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, a minister in the holy places, in the true tent that the Lord set up, not man. For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; thus it is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer. Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all, since there are priests who offer gifts according to the law. They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying, “See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain.””
Note that God set all the instructions and pattern— it is parallel to the pattern of the sanctuary in Heaven!
Acts 7: 44 "Our fathers had the tent of witness in the wilderness, just as he who spoke to Moses directed him to make it, according to the pattern that he had seen.
,49 "'Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord, or what is the place of my rest?50 Did not my hand make all these things?'51 "You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you
Today we are the living Temple of the Spirit of God:
1 Corinthians 6:19 ESV
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,
2. Believers are Priests of God today, therefore we need to understand the original requirements and methods God gave to the priesthood of Moses.
1 Peter 2: 5 “you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” 1 Peter 2:9 “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”
shadows--outline form--lack details generally not recognized until the fulfillment arrives
one can then look back and recognize the similarities
types— a “prophetic symbol” representations of something yet future
symbols— important symbols: colors, numbers, materials— these will be discussed as they come up
NOTE: there are so many parallels and symbolic uses of numbers and symbols that one can get buried in the minute details and miss the importance of the bigger picture: I will try to give you some of these details and comparisons, but will not cover them all

What is it?

What is the tabernacle? a moveable “tent of meeting” where God could interact with His people from a SACRED space— in order to dwell visibly in the midst of His chosen people
Sacred Space required for the protection of the people, not for God’s protection
the form, the materials and all the details of the system of worship display eternal spiritual truths
Preparation
Building Requirements: God the ARCHITECT; Moses GENERAL CONTRACTOR, Bezaleel and Aholiab ARTISAN BUILDERS
exactly according to the pattern (as we just read in Heb. 8)
by the anointing of the Holy Spirit
Exodus 31: 1-6 The Lord said to Moses, “See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship, to devise artistic designs, to work in gold, silver, and bronze, in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, to work in every craft. And behold, I have appointed with him Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan. And I have given to all able men ability, that they may make all that I have commanded you:
Bezaleel: “in the shadow of God” son of “splendor,” son of “freedom,” of tribe of “praise”
Aholiab: “tabernacle of my father,” son of “support or helper” tribe of “judgment”
Free will offerings from the people of God
Exodus 25:2 ESV
“Speak to the people of Israel, that they take for me a contribution. From every man whose heart moves him you shall receive the contribution for me.
Exodus 36:5-6
So Moses gave command, and word was proclaimed throughout the camp, “Let no man or woman do anything more for the contribution for the sanctuary.” So the people were restrained from bringing,
God provided a people enslaved for 400 years with the materials to build His house. The people of Yahweh were rewarded for their years of labor, but it was not for their own benefit, but to enable them to give to the Lord.
Exodus 11:2-3 “Speak now in the hearing of the people, that they ask, every man of his neighbor and every woman of her neighbor, for silver and gold jewelry.” And the Lord gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians. Moreover, the man Moses was very great in the land of Egypt, in the sight of Pharaoh’s servants and in the sight of the people.” They PLUNDERED the Egyptians… for God
COSTS / VALUE
The valuation of the Wilderness Tabernacle is difficult to determine, we can look at the amounts and current value of the metals today, but one must also factor in the rest of the materials which include
precious stones — wood — linen cloth — rare spices — oil — dyes —
animals used for their skins and sacrifices — and time and labor. (9 months to build)
Using the current value of metals:
think about the weight they had to carry place to place
minimum approximate weight of wood = 5,000# / weight metals = 14,946 #
1 Talent = 75#
Gold 29 1/4 Talents, (2, 103 #) = $59,127,275
Silver 100 1/2 Talents ( 7,537 #) = $2,730,200
Bronze 70 3/4 Talents (5,306 #) = $13,265
cost of metals alone: $ 61,870,742
Rounds up to : Sixty one Million, 870 Thousand, 750 dollars

Layout:

Camp: Tabernacle was placed in the very center of camp (men20+ = 603,550
(all the tribes surrounded it in military formations) Faced East
Was in the very center of the encampment and the Tribes were arranged in specific locations surrounding it
The Priests ( all of the tribe of Levi) formed a line completely around the walls of the outer court— with Moses, Aaron and the sons of Aaron guarding the eastern gate
Beyond them to the East was: Judah, Issachar and Zebulan under the LION banner
West: Ephraim, Mannaseh & Benjamin under OX banner
North: Dan, Asher, Naphtali under Eagle banner
South: Reuban, Simeon and Gad under the banner of the Man
Recognize these symbols? from the visions of Ezek 1, Revelations 4

General Layout— see handout

Outer Court- Holy Place-Holiest of Holies

Outer Court framework

two ways to look at the construction:
God’s view (listed first as received by Moses) represents God’s grace to make a way for sinful, fallen mankind—He proceeded from His holy habitation out to mankind
Man’s View (order of construction) represent Man’s faith to follow step by step in the pathway to His presence Man’s faith walk toward God begins with sacrifice— the acceptance of Jesus as the blood sacrifice and the daily acceptance of our own crucifixion on His cross with Him
APPROACHING GOD: Israelites could only enter through the open Eastern Gate, past the detailed curtain and could only participate in one of the elements with the Priest
The wall was 7 1/2 ft tall, so none could see into the Court until they had passed
The fine linen of the wall was a reminder that they were divided from Sacred Space— Righteousness vs. Common/ Profane or Unholy
Only the chosen (today the Redeemed) could enter into the sacred space
once inside it became a wall of protection, righteousness--
Col. 3:3-5 life hidden, so put to death
Colossians 3:3–5 ESV
For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
LAW AGE: 100 cubit x 50 cubits x 5 cubits = 1500 Sq cubits
number for the age of the LAW (dispensation of the Law Covenant)
: (Moses to Christ approx 1500 yrs.) The Outer Court representing the Law had to be endured by every Israelite, with the division from God through the priesthood before they were ready for entrance to the Tabernacle ( the INCARNATE WORD who tabernacled with man on the earth)
Gal 3:24
Galatians 3:24 (ESV)
So then, the law was our guardian (schoolmaster) until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith.
Place of All Blood Sacrifice: no sacrifices occured within the Tabernacle— only outside and the blood was brought in, — all sacrifices occur in the age of Law (Jesus was the final one under that dispensation)
Heb 10:1-3 Blood sacrifices ceased
Hebrews 10:1–3 ESV
For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near. Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins? But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year.
Wall curtains held up by PILLARS (60)— covered in Brass and set it Brass sockets and set on the inside of the curtain (seen within, but not by those outside)— not attraction attention to themselves, but always holding out Christ’s righteousness
Pillars—speak of stability and holding up the Righteousness of God for all to see
Rev 3:12 We become a Pillar in Temple
Revelation 3:12 ESV
The one who conquers, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God. Never shall he go out of it, and I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own new name.
1 Tim 3:15 The Church is a Pillar of Truth in the World
1 Timothy 3:15 ESV
if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.
Connected together by fillets of silver (connecting rods for greater stability)
Exo. 30:11-16 SILVER: collected, atonement and ransom money— only the price of atonement can give the individual pillars of the body stability, we cannot stand on our own. Every wind of adversity or doctrine would cause us to wobble and fall
We are all bound together by the price of atonement for our sins
Exodus 30:11–16 ESV
The Lord said to Moses, “When you take the census of the people of Israel, then each shall give a ransom for his life to the Lord when you number them, that there be no plague among them when you number them. Each one who is numbered in the census shall give this: half a shekel according to the shekel of the sanctuary (the shekel is twenty gerahs), half a shekel as an offering to the Lord. Everyone who is numbered in the census, from twenty years old and upward, shall give the Lord’s offering. The rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less, than the half shekel, when you give the Lord’s offering to make atonement for your lives. You shall take the atonement money from the people of Israel and shall give it for the service of the tent of meeting, that it may bring the people of Israel to remembrance before the Lord, so as to make atonement for your lives.”
Hooks of Silver — holding up Christ’s righteousness
Crowned with Silver— “Chapiters” Saints are crowned with the glory of redemption and with the helmet of salvation
Christ exchanged a crown of thorns for a Crown of glory and honor and purchased a golden crown for us in our eternal life
Brass Sockets: (feet) strength and judgment ( first metal seen as we approach God)
first truth: Sin must be Judged! Jesus is pictured in Rev. with feet of Brass— he stands in judgment of Sin
The Church (who stand IN CHRIST) must also stand to judge sin in the midst—
1 Pet 4:17
1 Peter 4:17 ESV
For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?
Cords & Nails (pins) God drew Israel to Himself with cords of kindness and bands of love… these provide an anchor for our souls
Hos 11:4
Hosea 11:4 (ESV)
I led them with cords of kindness, with the bands of love, and I became to them as one who eases the yoke on their jaws, and I bent down to them and fed them.
Nails speak first of the nails that held Christ to the cross
He is also prophetically likend to a a Nail for the display of God’s glory: in
Isaiah 22:20-25 & Zech 10:3-4

ENTRANCE

Gate: aka curtain for the door of the court, door of the court
1. One Way in through the door or gate— Everyone no matter where they were in the camp had to come in the one way:
john 14:6
John 14:6 ESV
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Acts 4:12
Acts 4:12 ESV
And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
Wide Gate: 20 cubits long 5 cubits high God desires all to enter
1 Tim 2 4
1 Timothy 2:4 (ESV)
In the sight of God our Savior who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
Gate is Beautiful: unique, distinctive and striking in contrast to all other things in desert
Fine twined Linen- Jesus is Righteousness personified
Blue— Deity of Jesus: Heavenly man of the gospel of John
Purple— Royalty or Kingship of Jesus: identified by Matthew
Scarlet— Blood Sacrifice depicted in gospel of Mark
4 Pillars for this gate: (4 number earth or whole world)— 4 winds, 4 corners, 4 gospels
held up by hooks of silver (atonement/ ransom money) to display Christ
3 CURTAINS in total between the world and the presence of God:
THE Way (entrance into outer court)
THE TRUTH (entrance into Tabernacle— furniture in the Holy Place— any priest could enter)
THE LIFE (veil dividing God’s holy presence for all but the High Priest)
Every element had to be performed by the priest chosen for service in the sanctuary, the sanctuary priests were only of the Kohath tribe of Levi descendants of Moses and Aaron (we will discuss the priesthood of JC through the line of Melchizedek later)
GATES are the entrance to the presence of God— must enter thru gate
Ps 100:4
Psalm 100:4 (ESV)
Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise!
Our Promise is: Is 54: 1-3 God speaks to the New Testament believers in the church age:
Isaiah 54:1–3 (ESV)
“Enlarge the place of your tent, and let the curtains of your habitations be stretched out; do not hold back; lengthen your cords and strengthen your stakes.
For you will spread abroad to the right and to the left, and your offspring will possess the nations and will people the desolate cities.
