Mary Magdalene, Her Hope is Gone

Mary a devout follower of Jesus
she loved Jesus, maybe even more than the disciples
Jesus rescued her from demons who were controlling her
Luke 8:2 LEB
and some women who had been healed of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (who was called Magdalene), from whom seven demons had gone out,
out of her love for her master (Adonai) she gave to His ministry
Luke 8:3 LEB
and Joanna the wife of Chuza (Herod’s household manager), and Susanna, and many others who were helping to support them from their possessions.
Mary was with Jesus every time she could
she was probably at the trial
the people screaming crucify Him
on the road to Golgotha where Jesus was carrying His cross
she wanted so bad to go out and help, seeing the weariness as He stumbles under the load
she is watching the nails being pounded into His hands
the hands that lifted her out of her depression
below the cross on Calvary, lamenting the death of her redeemer, the one she loves
she hears the agonizing words of Jesus I thirst
My God My God why have you forsaken me
It is finished
she hears the taunts form the crowd
she hears Jesus tell the thief “today you will be with me in Paradise
Her heart is breaking, Hope is fading away fast
Luke 24 13-21
The 2 on the road to Emmaus had also lost Hope
now Mary is at the empty tomb and not only is her hope lost, but she cant even pour out her love on the body
Read John 20 11-18
Pray

Hopeless

Mary has come back to the tomb
peter and John have come and accessed the situation and left
there is a lot she does not understand
she is grieving and crying her heavy loss
John 20:11 LEB
But Mary stood outside at the tomb, weeping. Then, while she was weeping, she bent over to look into the tomb,
she looks in again, maybe what she did not see earlier was just a trick of the light
and through her tear clouded eyes
John 20:12 LEB
and she saw two angels in white, seated one at the head and one at the feet where the body of Jesus had been lying.
and they ask her
John 20:13 LEB
And they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have put him!”
My Lord, Master, Adonai, Messiah, God, the miracle worker. the Redeemer of Israel
He has not only died, but now the body snatchers have taken Him away
Her lost hope has been insulted

Why Are You Weeping?

John 20:13 LEB
And they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have put him!”
this is not a get information question
it’s a why are you acting contrary to facts? question
why are you weeping?
Jesus is God He came to die, and then be rose again the 3rd day
these things you have heard over and over again
John and Peter got it
she did not respond to their question but turned around
John 20:14 LEB
When she had said these things, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and she did not know that it was Jesus.
John 20:15 LEB
Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?” She thought that it was the gardener, and said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will take him.”
the same question— why are you weeping?
this time by the person she is looking for
does not recognize
her hope is so shattered that Jesus is unrecognizable

Jesus The Only Hope

HOPE The confidence that, by integrating God’s redemptive acts in the past with trusting human responses in the present, the faithful will experience the fullness of God’s goodness both in the present and in the future.

True hope can only be found in faith in Jesus

Biblical faith rests on the trustworthiness of God to keep His promises

John 20:16 LEB
Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned around and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni” (which means “Teacher”).
when Jesus called her name
John 10:3 LEB
For this one the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
Jesus knows His sheep and they recognize His voice when He calls them by name
When Jesus spoke her name “Mary”
Hope was restored
Her Lord was alive, Jesus is alive
Her God is not dead
Her messiah the one who came to redeem is alive
and now is able to redeem
The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world
Mary is the first to see the risen Savior

Our Blessed Hope

John 20:17–18 LEB
Jesus said to her, “Do not touch me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, and my God and your God.’ ” Mary Magdalene came and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and he had said these things to her.
Go to my Brothers
because Jesus has died and rose again the disciples have a new relationship
a brother
they are now a part of the family
they have been adopted into the family
the same Father as Jesus
joint Heirs
Mary was looking for a body and found the living Jesus
we also are looking for the Living Jesus, to come and take us home
Titus 2:13 LEB
looking forward to the blessed hope and the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,
our Hope is not dead in the grave
our hope is not defeated by the cross
but our hope is the living breathing son of God
out great savior
Our Hope is coming to take us home to be with Him forever

Don’t Give Up On Hope

Psalm 33:17–22 LEB
The horse is a false hope for victory, nor can it save by the greatness of its power. Behold, the eye of Yahweh is on those who fear him, on those who hope for his loyal love to deliver their soul from death and to keep them alive in famine. Our soul waits for Yahweh; he is our help and our shield. For in him our heart rejoices because in his holy name we trust. Let your loyal love, O Yahweh, be upon us, even as we hope in you.
Our hope lies in the redemptive work of Jesus
our hope lies in the promises of God
our hope can only be found in Gods word
as we look at the troubles of this world and the destructive policies of world governments
Revelation 17:12–17 LEB
And the ten horns that you saw are ten kings, who have not yet received a kingdom, but they will receive authority as kings for one hour with the beast. These have one opinion, and they will give their power and authority to the beast. These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, because he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful.” And he said to me, “The waters that you saw, where the prostitute is seated, are peoples and crowds and nations and languages. And the ten horns that you saw and the beast, these will hate the prostitute and will make her desolate and naked, and they will eat her flesh and will burn her up with fire. For God put into their hearts to carry out his purpose and to make a unanimous decision and to give their kingdom to the beast, until the words of God are fulfilled.
God’s purpose in the the antichrist kingdom
He will use this to destroy the kingdoms of this present world
He is demonstrating to the world that satan’s was is only destruction
then He will usher in the the Great reign of Jesus
Which kingdom do you belong to
where do you put your Hope?
in Jesus or satan’s world?
