Luther had seen the corruption that was overtaking the Roman Catholic Church and is disgusted him.
So many of the teaching’s were not founded in scripture but were rules and idea’s made up the the papacy.
Because of this he had written his 95 theses which had spread like wild fire.
After the reformation had begun, Luther was called to the Diet of Worms in 1521.
There he was called to recant on His teachings.
Luther’s answer was “Unless I am convinced by sacred Scripture or by evident reason, I cannot recant because my conscience is held captive by the Word of God, and to act against conscience is neither right nor safe.
Here I stand.
God help me.
I can do no other.”
The term Sola Scriptura means by scripture alone, and it was one of the five sola’s to come out of the reformation.
This way of thinking didn’t come becasue the Roman church didn’t believe in the infallibility or inerrancy of scripture.
But that they had so much tradition mixed in with doctrine that it really muddied the water.
The reformers wanted to call people back to a relationship with God through His word.
The idea of Sola Scriptura is that their is no other authority other than sacred scripture.
That it alone is the only source of divine revelation, inspiration, it alone is infallible.
We can go to other sources and should respect the great Theologians that came before us, but all of what we learn should be backed by the bible.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
All, the entire scope of scripture.
Breathed out by God
Theopneustos is the word used.
The only place this appears in scripture.
Theo’s God, Pneuma spirit or breath.
The entirety of scripture has come from the very spirit of God.
Not just portions of it.
Thematic inspiration
Only themes are inspired
Partial inspiration
Contains parts of inspired word and others are man’s idea’s mixed in.
If we believe any of these views, we can choose what to obey claiming that the rest isn’t inspired.
By Sola Scriptura we rest knowing that all of it is from God.
Reproof, correction, training
Reproof is to convict us of what we have done wrong.
Correction is to correct those bad habit’s that we have picked up.
Training us how to live a righteous life.
That we are equipped to face anything in this world.
This is the point of scripture.
2 Peter 1:20-21
We don’t get to interpret scripture as we see fit.
God’s word says one thing, means one thing.
What is that one thing.
Application can be different, but not what God meant.
The word of God didn’t come by the will of man.
God gave the people the words to put down.
2 Peter 2:1
There has been false prophets there will be false prophets.
This is why holding to sacred scripture is so important.
By coming to the written word, we will weed out false prophets.
Incomplete Inspiration
God’s cannon isn’t closed.
The destructive thing about this is it’s hard to say if the word of God is done or not.
Is it a false prophet or ongoing prophecy?
The Son has spoken, His words are written.
Does God guide us?
Yes
But it isn’t ongoing prophecies and new cannon’s
This what Luther was so passionate about
He saw the word of God being neglected and new doctrine that had no basis in scripture being followed.
There are movements today that follow the same idea.
New prophecies rather than the written word.
If your following prophets, 99% of the time they are false.
Follow the word that is tried and true, relying on scripture alone for doctrine.
