Text: John 6:1-14
John 6:1–14 NKJV
After these things Jesus went over the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. Then a great multitude followed Him, because they saw His signs which He performed on those who were diseased. And Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat with His disciples. Now the Passover, a feast of the Jews, was near. Then Jesus lifted up His eyes, and seeing a great multitude coming toward Him, He said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat?” But this He said to test him, for He Himself knew what He would do. Philip answered Him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may have a little.” One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, “There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, but what are they among so many?” Then Jesus said, “Make the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. And Jesus took the loaves, and when He had given thanks He distributed them to the disciples, and the disciples to those sitting down; and likewise of the fish, as much as they wanted. So when they were filled, He said to His disciples, “Gather up the fragments that remain, so that nothing is lost.” Therefore they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten. Then those men, when they had seen the sign that Jesus did, said, “This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.”
We are continuing our series on the 7 signs of the book of John.
We know now that John is different from the synoptic gospels because John does not start with prophecy but he starts with Jesus’s deity.
That before Mary existed, he was. We know that John got a front row seat to see the BEST OF JESUS AND THE WORST OF JESUS.
HE IS ONE WHO IS DIFFERENT, BECAUSE HE SAW JESUS DYING ON THE CROSS FOR THE SINS OF MAN.
John point out some 7 signs of what Jesus did, and his purpose behind his writing is so that people will believe.
John calls these miracles Jesus did, signs because there is a message that Goes with the miracle.
The basis of everything John speaks of is so that people would believe and be saved.
The first message (The turning of water into wine) is the message of Salvation through the WORD OF GOD.
The second message (healing the royal official’s son) is the message of Salvation by FAITH
and last week we were in chapter 5 today, where the message is SALVATION BY GRACE.
But it is here today where we start the second half of this series to talk about the results of Salvation.
Here today, we land in chapter 6 to learn that Salvation brings SATISFACTION.
THIS IS THE FOURTH SIGN OF JESUS CHRIST.
JESUS FEEDS THE FIVE THOUSAND. SUCH AN INTERESTING TEXT.
A text thats very familiar. This text on the face seems as though jesus just does another miracle feeding the hungry. That Jesus is being Jesus at this point.
But today, I want to look a bit closer at this text, and show how wonderful it can be if you sell out and follow Christ.
The bible says, “After these things, Jesus went over the Sea of Galilee, and a great multitude followed him, because of the signs they saw him do. Jesus and his disciples are now at the mountain top, and Jesus seeing a great multitude coming toward him, said to one of the disciples “ Where shall we buy bread that they may eat?” The bible says that there is a lad, who has two fish and 5 loaves of bread, and Jesus says make the people sit down,
The bible says the men sat down, and jesus turns these two fish and 5 loaves into a dinner for the multitude, so much so, he had some left over.
Now of course we know this text, but I want to go back and look at a few points that can some how help us in the days to come.
Jesus has crossed over into the Sea of Galilee and the bible says the people have followed him.
Some 5,000 Men, not including women and children followed this man because of the miracles he had been doing in the land.
to put this text into prospective, Jesus is NOT crossing this sea, to teach them more, but Jesus crosses this sea to retreat, Get away, seek God, but as he’s at the mountain top with his disciples, he sees that people are already on their way to him.
Now this is just a quick nugget, IT WASN’T JESUS BEING AT THE TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN THAT MADE PEOPLE FOLLOW HIM, BUT IT WAS THE WORK HE DID ON THE GROUND, THAT MADE PEOPLE FOLLOW HIM.
Do not think just because you are at the top people will follow you. You have to do work on the ground for people to follow you.
Jesus, understanding what it took to cross the sea, and follow him says, where shall we buy bread that these may eat?
They’ve already been fed spiritually, and Jesus asks the question, do we have bread that they may eat,
They followed him and he fed them spiritually,
and They are following him and he’s about to feed them naturally, and this may be a word for someone who is HUNGRY, that IF YOU FOLLOW HIM, he will feed you.
I don’t know who I’m talking to but some body can testify, the only reason I was fed, is because I followed him.
These people, MUST BE EXHAUSTED church is over, the benediction has been given, yet they still follow him.
Because following him does not end when church does. But following him remains after the benediction.
Watch this,
Jesus tells them to sit down.
They have crossed over the sea of Galilee, tired, hungry, still looking to Jesus.
They are selling out. These people have no business being there. They should be at home, at work, fulfilling their desire to eat and rest, but Jesus says SIT DOWN.
THEY HAVE FOLLOWED HIM, AND HE SAYS SIT DOWN.
DEPENDING ON HIM AND HE SAYS SIT DOWN.
WHAT FAITH YOU HAVE TO HAVE, TO SIT DOWN. TO REST IN THE PROMISES OF GOD.
JESUS TELLS THEM TO SIT DOWN. He didn’t tell them to turn around, he didn’t tell them to go back, he said SIT DOWN.
They have come too far to turn around and they are too hungry to keep going and Jesus tells them to sit down.
When you sit down, they allows God to work in your life,
sitting down don’t mean the work is stopping, sitting down means that the work is about to begin.
he takes it,
he blesses it,
He breaks it,
he gives it away,
