Today’s reading is not our text for the passage but one that has gripped my heart as I consider what Jesus is doing in today’s story

There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him. Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment. Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, which should betray him, Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein. Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this. For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always. Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead. But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death; Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus. On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord. Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue: For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God. Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me. I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.
Invitation to his home but not his heart
Notice Jesus is a friend of sinners but he is also willing to go home into the home of the Pharisee. Why? We all are sinners. We all are in need of forgiveness.

Wasn’t able to stay on the sideline

The rebuke in verse 39 is not because the woman has come to the meal, but because she did not stay on the sidelines.
Appears she had already met or knew of Jesus.

Story of 3 women of diverse backgrounds
Mary Magdalene serves after having seven demons exorcised by Jesus.
Joanna, as the wife of Herod’s steward Cuza, gives evidence that Jesus’ message has reached even into the palace. Susanna seems to be connected to that name.
Then the women in this story.
Their ministry comes at two levels: personal involvement and the contribution of resources. Both levels of involvement are important to effective ministry.

Jesus: The Hero of every story worth telling

Should we go about sinning more?

Calm down Simon lets not assume you are a 50 sinner and not the 500
If you grew up in a Christian home then let you attitude be that of Chestley in his testimony. God saved him from more sin.
You think Jesus really loved saving the really bad cases. Look at the heart of this Pharisee and look on the outward condition of this women. Don’t assume their outward sinner was more difficult for God to forgive then your silent, disrespectful rebellion

she was not forgiven because she anointed Him with oil.
“It's not your love to Me which has saved you, it is because you trusted in Me. You knew that I was the only Man that could forgive you, and therefore, you loved Me.”
“Simon, very frankly, your lack of love to Me shows Me that you don't know who I am and you don't know your own heart.
This woman has something to teach us because she didn't care what anybody else in that room thought of her.
