*ADVENT IS ABOUT HOPE*

 

/Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!

According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead…            /(1 Peter 1:3)

*I.**

Peter learned three things about Jesus the Messiah*

A.  He learned that Jesus is the Prophet (John 6:66-69)

1.  Jesus is the Word

2.       Jesus embodies & declares God’s words

B.  He learned that Jesus is the Priest (Matthew 18:21-22)

1.  Jesus came to die for our sins

2.       He bridges the gap between us & God

C.  He learned that Jesus is the King (Matthew 16:13-17)

1.  Messiah = King of glory

2.       King of the universe

*II.**

That revelation gave Peter three eternal things*

A.  Knowing Jesus as Prophet gave him faith

1.  Faith comes by hearing God’s word

2.       His words are the words of eternal life

B.  Knowing Jesus as Priest gave him hope

1.

By his sacrifice, sin is removed

2.       A perfect future is assured

C.  Knowing Jesus as King gave him love

1.

You love a king who provides & protects

2.       With such a king, you have nothing to fear

*III.**

But, Peter denied his Lord 3 times.

What went wrong?*

A.  Peter’s love & faith were intact

1.

He believed Jesus was prophet

2.       He believed He was king

B.  But, he lost hope

1.

The priest was dead

2.       The sacrifice was to no avail

3.       Without hope, he denied Christ

*IV.

**The resurrection restored Peter’s hope*

A.  Born again to a living hope

1.  Assurance of good triumphing

2.

Not wishful thinking

B.  Because Jesus came

1.

We have hope for eternal life

2.       We have hope for resurrected bodies

3.       We have hope for a perfect world

*CONSIDER*

“Advent is concerned with that very connection between memory and hope which is so necessary to man.

Advent’s intention is to awaken the most profound and basic emotional memory within us, namely, the memory of the God who became a child.

This is a healing memory; it brings hope.

The purpose of the Church’s year is continually to rehearse her great history of memories, to awaken the heart’s memory so that it can discern the star of hope.…It is the beautiful task of Advent to awaken in all of us memories of goodness and thus to open doors of hope.”

*THE WORD OF THE LORD*

/Romans 8:23-25 NLT: And we believers also groan, even though we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory, for we long for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering.

We, too, wait with eager hope for the day when God will give us our full rights as his adopted children, including the new bodies he has promised us.

We were given this hope when we were saved.

(If we already have something, we don’t need to hope for it.

But if we look forward to something we don’t yet have, we must wait patiently and confidently.)/
