Blessings and Curses
in vs 1-6 we saw Zechariah pleading with the people to not do what their ancestors did in
in Deut God promised blessings and curses if they followed his laws
not following God and killing and not listening to the prophets
God wants to bless the people but they would not
Zechariah is telling them to turn to God and He will turn to you
But because of their totally depraved heart it was impossible for them to do that
in fact the people eventually killed Zechariah
and its only through God’s grace that we turn to God
His Grace changes our heart to accept Him
lets look at what God did in the book Haggai
it was God who prompted the people to work
A few months later Zechariah receives his first vision
Read Zechariah 1 7-17
Pray
Zechariah’s First Vision
His first apocalyptic vision was
one man with Zechariah / messenger angel
the myrtle shrubs / small evergreen with flowers
one man with a red horse / Jesus
3 men behind him on horses / Patrolling angels
this vision needs to be interpreted to Zechariah - V 9
he doesn't understand what he is seeing
The man / Angel that was beside Zechariah said V 9
The Man with the red horse now speaks
He Gestures to the 3 on horses behind him
and they give their report
Who did they give their report to?
Pre incarnate Jesus
Jesus is the leader of the angels who patrol the earth
Jesus knows all but still has angels out on patrol
lets look at this in Heaven
the patrolling angels came back from their patrol to give their report
Satan is also on patrol
aren't you glad there are good angels also out there patrolling
The report is-- the earth is dwelling in peace
it is the second year of Darius
Darius put down some uprisings that was happening in the kingdom
Darius has his own patrol men on fast horses reporting back to him
the world at peace should be a good thing but...
Jerusalem was in ruin
God’s people have no place to worship
globalism is alive and well
but God’s people are being persecuted
the world is at peace but God’s wrath has been poured out on the children of Israel
Jesus Intercedes For His People
this is the theme of the message
the conversation now turns Heavenward
we are going to see Jesus praying to the Father
as a response to the report from the patrolling
the report that the earth is at peace
Jesus asks the Father, How long?
the question is should He have compassion?
what has the people of Israel done do deserve compassion?
Have they turned to God?
Have they followed His commandments?
do they obey His law?
do they love Him more than they love themselves?
the answer is a resounding NO
Lets step back and re read V 12
Jesus is pleading for Jerusalem
Jesus is pleading for the people
because of His great love for them
because of the covenant that He gave to Abraham
these unconditional covenants were given to Abraham
then talking to David about Solomon God says
God has promised to love, to keep David’s descendants on the throne
promised to make Israel a great nation
to change their heart
all of these promises God gave to the people
Jesus is here interceding for them
How long? its been 70 years
when will you restore Jerusalem?
The Answer
Jesus is praying to the Father on behalf of the people in Jerusalem
Jesus is praying on behalf of Zechariah
these are the questions that zechariah wants to know the answer to
probably is afraid to ask
then the Father answers to the messenger angel
Gracious and comforting words
Our God is Good
our God is love
Our God is full of compassion
our God is full of grace and mercy
despite their undeservidness He will restore Jerusalem
God has a love for Jerusalem even today
God will keep His promises to the Nation Israel
the nations that God used to punish Israel went overboard
God will again bless Israel
what great comfort to God’s people, that God is in charge
What a great comfort to know that Jesus is interceding for us before the throne of God
Standing in the gap for us
We are also a undeserving people who The Father loved enough to send Jesus to die for us
to be the substitute sacrifice on our behalf
to make our heart of stone into flesh
to make us from unbelieving to believing
to make us from a son of satan to be adopted into the family of God
Jesus interceded on our behalf
