Self awareness is an essential key to spiritual growth. I study my world and universe but don’t study myself, my identity, my impact on others

The Need

Five Signs of Lack of Self Awareness (Becky Storey)
I’m defensive- no confidence in my identity
I have no control over my emotions
I never take blame
I’m never satisfied or content
I have beliefs that I do not understand- absorbed the opinions of others
A lack of self awareness forces me to live a surface level life.
Jesus always focused on the inside.
Prov 20:5.
In the church I should be helping others discover what’s inside.
Who am I? Jesus asked the disciples who people thought he was to make them think.
Ann Landers, “ Don’t accept your dogs admiration as proof of your self worth”
Ps 42-43 David asked God to search his heart. He understood from this view that his weaknesses were areas God could use.
Ask myself the following questions:
What makes me happy
What is my greatest spiritual strength and weakness
What irritates me about other people and how do I deal with it?
What is my greatest fear?
What three character traits would my friends say describes me
What is the last book, movie, hobby, that I would recommend?
What is my lifelong dream?
“Self awareness is never the destination. It is only a step on the way to transformation.” Tim Keller

Equipping for Transformation

Rom 12:2
Ps 139:22-23. A gutsy prayer from David. He wasn’t afraid for God to show him who he really was.
My deepest longing is to be known by someone. “Search me and know me…..”
I will get my identity from one of two sources. Horizontal or vertical views.

Horizontal View of Identity

The reason I struggle with insecurity is because I compare my behind-the-scenes with everyone else’s highlight reel. The horizontal view.
Lk18:11-12. Pharisee self image was all horizontal comparison and his prayer was actually a boast to boost his own ego.

Vertical View of My Identity

Freedom in Christ is freedom from comparing myself to others. My identity as one who is Loved, Accepted, and Complete comes from God.
2Cor 3:1-6 Notice Paul’s statement that he is allowed to love himself as God made him and this allows him to love others in the same way. Not focused on the outside but on the inside.
My problem is not a lack of self confidence but a lack of God-confidence.
Heb 10:24-25. How can I encourage others in the church or bring others into the church? By noticing and encouraging what is inside of others.
