This one for you! So often we hear messages and we say so and so should have been here. They needed to hear that message. We miss that the one that needed to be here was you! Here in the opening of chapter 5 the writer leaves no one for excuses. No ambiguity here. 2 The LORD our God made a covenant with us in Horeb. 3 Not with our fathers did the LORD make this covenant, but with us, who are all of us here alive today.(5:2–3). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles. The message Bible said even clearer: GOD, our God, made a covenant with us at Horeb. GOD didn’t just make this covenant with our parents; he made it also with us, with all of us who are alive right now. (Dt 5:2–3).
Since the message is for us and directed towards us it would behove us to find out what Moses had to say. Its this simple Moses repeats the the commandments the Lord gave him in Exodus 20:2-17
The Lord reminds us that He is the Lord our God. In all our sophistication we need to be reminded of who is God. The Lord reminds us if it had not been for the Lord who was on our side where would we be? We need to hear this. Its the Lord who made us and we ourselves. The reminds them that it was he who brought them out of Egypt. This is significant because Israel had spent 430 years in slavery under the harshness of the Egyptians. When the Lord said I brought you out of Egypt the children of Israel has to reflect on what all took place. The 10 plagues, them crossing the Red Sea on dry land, and Pharaoh's army drowning in the Red Sea.
We are instructed to have no other Gods before Him, Make no graven images to, make no idols, We are to serve( worship) the Lord and the Lord alone. He warns us that he is a jealous God!
It is clear our disobedience puts us at risk! Verse 9 says: 9 You shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, (Dt 5:9) Its also clear that obedience has its benefits, 10 but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. (Dt 5:10).
Now when its that clear curses for disobedience and his steadfast love for obedience. You chose. Joshua said it like this: 15 And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” (Jos 24:15).
We see the affects of disobedience on our society. Whether its 11 year old doing carjacking , mass mobs going into stores smashing and grabbing or even the foolishness of parents buying a gun for a 15 year old who in turns shoots us his school.
Sin has a way of bring shame and embarrassment. I know that if any of those folks going into stores smashing we my family members I would truly be embarrassed. The sad thing today is folks today have no shame. No remorse.
I am not trying to reminisce but there was a time when sin brought shame. Not today. Moses had to remind them that their fore-parents we afraid of the Lord! Moses speaks them as he was speaking to those that originally came over the Red Sea. 4o years later he reminds them of what the Lord said. Many would think the Lord is trying to restrict you with His commandments. These commandments are to guide us and keep us out of trouble. Honoring and respecting God will establish your life.
Its shapes you and gives you peace. The first 4 commandments are towards God. Acknowledging he is God, No Graven images, Don’t take his name in vain finally honoring the Sabbath. All of these show honor and respect for God. We need to practice this. We have a lot of work today. Proper reference of the Lord is the begging of wisdom. Parents when your children see you honoring God they will learn to honor God! There should be a committment in the Body of Christ that we gonna honor God. Honor God with our all that we do,
Secondly He Requires us to Love Humanity
16 “ ‘Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.
17 “ ‘You shall not murder.
18 “ ‘And you shall not commit adultery.
19 “ ‘And you shall not steal.
20 “ ‘And you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
21 “ ‘And you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. And you shall not desire your neighbor’s house, his field, or his male servant, or his female servant, his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.’
The next 6 commandments all pertain to how we treat each other. Love for humanity is vitality important for the saint.
22 “These words the LORD spoke to all your assembly at the mountain out of the midst of the fire, the cloud, and the thick darkness, with a loud voice; and he added no more. And he wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me. 23 And as soon as you heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, you came near to me, all the heads of your tribes, and your elders. 24 And you said, ‘Behold, the LORD our God has shown us his glory and greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire. This day we have seen God speak with man, and man still live. 25 Now therefore why should (Dt 5:16–25). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
He expects us to keep them all in order to be blessed
The children of Israel heard these things and responded in the affirmative. They said we have heard this and we will do it! The Lord responds in verse 28 “And the LORD heard your words, when you spoke to me. And the LORD said to me, ‘I have heard the words of this people, which they have spoken to you. They are right in all that they have spoken. 29 Oh that they had such a heart as this always, to fear me and to keep all my commandments, that it might go well with them and with their descendants forever. (Dt 5:28–29). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles. The Lord is please when we listen Psalm 81 Oh, that my people would listen to me,
that Israel would walk in my ways!
14  I would soon subdue their enemies
and turn my hand against their foes. (Ps 81:13–14). Isaiah said it this way 18  Oh that you had paid attention to my commandments!
Then your peace would have been like a river,
and your righteousness like the waves of the sea;
19  your offspring would have been like the sand,
and your descendants like its grains;
their name would never be cut off
or destroyed from before me.” (Is 48:18–19).
