The Claims

The title emphasizing Jesus Christ’s deity, His office as Messiah and His pre-eminence as the object of the church’s faith and worship as the content of its gospel.

Jesus Himself affirms He is the Son of God

John 10:33–36 KJV 1900
33 The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God. 34 Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods? 35 If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken; 36 Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?
The Father affirms that Jesus Christ is His Son during His baptism in Matthew 3:17.
Matthew 3:17 KJV 1900
17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
The Father also confirms it on the mount of transfiguration in Matthew 17:1-5
Matthew 17:1–5 KJV 1900
1 And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, 2 And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. 3 And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. 4 Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. 5 While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.
Matthew 17:5 KJV 1900
5 While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.
Peter, who was present during the transfiguration also confirms the voice they all heard in 2 Peter 1:17.
2 Peter 1:17 KJV 1900
17 For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
I like what Peter wrote about the transfiguration experience:
2 Peter 1:16–18 KJV 1900
16 For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. 18 And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.
Others claimed that Jesus was the Son of God. When Jesus walked on the water and calmed the sea, those on the ship believed and confessed that Jesus is the Son of God (Matthew 14:33)
Matthew 14:33 KJV 1900
33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
Matthew 14:25–33 KJV 1900
25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. 26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. 27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. 28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. 29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. 31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? 32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. 33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
Demons also affirm that Jesus is the Son of God in Mark 5:7.
Mark 5:7 KJV 1900
7 And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not.
Mark 3:11 KJV 1900
11 And unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him, and cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God.
Luke 4:41 KJV 1900
41 And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.
James 2:19 KJV 1900
19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
Many preachers have said that an Atheist is “Dumber than the devil”. It is a great truth from God’s word despite it being such a harsh statement. It is better to warn our fellow man to their ignorance rather than to let them live and die in their ignorance without Christ.

The Critics

There has been no greater critic to Christ being the Son of God than satan himself. What is most interesting is that satan criticizes and questions Jesus’ claims yet knows that Jesus is the Son of God. This is satan’s tactic to sabotage the work of Christ in Matthew 4:3.
Matthew 4:3 KJV 1900
3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
Matthew 4:6 KJV 1900
6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
Notice that satan again attempts the same tactical maneuver on Jesus that he preformed on Eve. He questions and twists God’s word.
During Christ’s humiliation, the elders and scribes brought Him forth to question if He was the Son of God in Luke 22:67-71.
Luke 22:67–71 KJV 1900
67 Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe: 68 And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go. 69 Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God. 70 Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am. 71 And they said, What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth.
During the crucifixion of Christ, there were mockers who brought criticism to Christ’s claims as the Son of God in Matthew 27:40 and Matthew 27:43.
Matthew 27:40 KJV 1900
40 And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.
Matthew 27:40 KJV 1900
40 And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.
The truth is that even if Christ would have come down from the cross, that would not have been sufficient enough for them to believe. Just as Jesus had told the scribes and elders that they would not believe if He had told them, so the people also would not have believed.

The Connection

Jesus being Son of God stresses the truth of His deity.
Jesus Christ is Son of God the Father!
The Gospel of John uses the terms Father/Son many times to speak of Jesus Christ’s unique relationship with God.
Jesus being Son of God implies Jesus Christ’s equality with God in John 5:18.
John 5:18 KJV 1900
18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.
John 10:30 KJV 1900
30 I and my Father are one.
John makes it clear that you cannot have one without the other. You must have both the Father and the Son.
1 John 2:22–23 KJV 1900
22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. 23 Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.
2 John 9 KJV 1900
9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.
