Promises of God – His Freedom
For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.”
1 Corinthians 1:20.
We’ve covered His love, forgiveness, Salvation, Holy Spirit, Peace, and Joy.
Does God promise us freedom? If so, freedom from what?
Isaiah 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;
1. Psalm 146:7 Which executeth judgment for the oppressed: which giveth food to the hungry. The LORD looseth the prisoners:
a. To lose the prisoners is possibly a reference to the deliverance from Egypt. Exodus 6:1-9
b. Either way, it is understood that the Lord created us to be free, physically and spiritually.
2. Psalms 116:16 O LORD, truly I am thy servant; I am thy servant, and the son of thine handmaid: thou hast loosed my bonds.
a. Servitude with gratitude. It is because we have been set free that we so willingly serve Him.
i. Acts 9:6 And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.
1. That needs to be our attitude; Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?
Jesus had a few things to say about our freedom:
3. Jesus is the One spoken of in Isaiah 61 as see in Luke 4:17-19/ And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, 18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. 21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.
a. Being in Luke serves to validate the position of Christ, that being One sent from GOD, as well as the purpose of setting us free.
4. John 8:34-36 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. 35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. 36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
a. The TRUTH of Jesus Christ makes of free regardless of the bondage we may seemingly find ourselves in. IF we are in bondage it is because we have believed a lie of the Devil and not the Truth of Christ.
b. The teaching of Jesus here is that we have a choice in our freedom, even as Joshua said:
i. “Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD. 15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. Joshua 24:14-15.
1. Sin is a choice.
Paul has a few things to add as well:
5. Romans 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
a. Again, a reference to our choice in the matter. In choosing sin, we choose bondage. But to have the victory, we must be led by the Spirit, walk in the Spirit, and live in the Spirit.
6. 2 Corinthians 3:17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
a. This verse reminds me that we are to walk in the Spirit, to be led of the Spirit, and to live in the Spirit (Galatians 5) and therein is our liberty found. We have been MADE free.
7. Romans 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
a. Where do you find yourself living, under grace or under the Law?
8. Romans 6:20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. 21What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. 22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
a. As free citizen of the Kingdom of GOD we bear good fruit unto the glory of God.
b. We serve HIM to HIS glory.
9. Colossians 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
a. To be delivered from the power darkness is to be delivered from the power of Satan to demand we be found guilty.
Does God promise freedom? He does to all who believe on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
But what is it we are set free from?
· Free from the bondage of sin which cast us into hell
· Free from the guilt of sin
· Free from the fear of death
· Free from Depression – loneliness – misery and to have the joy of the Lord
· Free from anger, hatred, and all manners of evil
What is it you desire to be set free from?
The bondage of sin, of course.
Perhaps we need to be more specific, such as from the spirit of unforgiveness or of evil.
Perhaps it’s to be set free from the desire of your flesh.
OR deliverance from a particular vise.
Whatever it might be, my point is, the just shall live by faith. Faith is believing in the promise of God and thereby declaring our victory! Declaring our freedom!
Even declaring, I am thy servant, and the son of thine handmaid: thou hast loosed my bonds. Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?
We can do that when we realize that we have been made free! And we go out BOLDLY and declare the works of God in our life to all who might listen. We can say, Lord, send me!
That’s how a free person lives, boldly serving the Lord.
You have been made free to choose – “I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:” Deuteronomy 30:19.
