Here we are at the first Sunday in the New Year of 2022.
And often we pledge to make a new start to have a better and more fulfilling life than what we had this past year.
And there is nothing wrong in desiring that.
But the difference in desire and obtaining a more fulfilling life depends on what we believe.
The source of truth, that which a person believes, makes all the difference in obtaining instead of just desiring a better life.
So the question this morning is simply this,
What Do You Believe?
What is your source for Truth?
Is your source the internet, facebook, friends, family, the news or is it fact that is found in the Word of God?
I want us to get back to the Gospel According to Mark and continue our study of the life of Christ and His teachings of how we can live a better and more fulfilling life in 2022!
Text; Mark 10:32-34
You might ask the question, “What does this scripture have to do with what we believe?” or “What is our source for truth?”
We already know this and believe this! I’m saved, go to church and love the LORD!
This may be true, but is the Word of God your source for truth?
Remember Jesus is on His way to Jerusalem for the last time.
Jesus is walking ahead of the crowd and his disciples at a faster pace than usual.
He is walking with great conviction and courage, willing to His death.
And his disciples knew this.
This is the third time Jesus has spoken of His death and resurrection.
Each time Jesus has given a detailed description of his coming death and resurrection, yet the disciples still are not understanding and trusting, having doubt it will happen as Jesus has said.
In the same fashion, we may believe what this scripture says for salvation but we don’t fully trust the Bible for our daily guidance for a better life!
You can believe the Word of God to be the only source for truth, then and now!
1.
The Accuracy of the Scriptures;
Each time Jesus explained to His disciples His impending suffering, death and resurrection, he was preparing the disciples that He would fulfill all the prophesies concerning Him in the Old Testament.
And for them to have prior knowledge of these things would assure them God was in complete control when these things came to pass.
Betrayed- handed over, delivered through disloyalty
Judas betrayed Christ to the Jewish authorities for thirty pieces of silver, just as the Scriptures predicted.
Judas also pointed out Jesus to His captors with a kiss.
The scriptures predicted the Messiah would be betrayed by a friend.
Condemned to Death- Jesus would be falsely condemned by men, to death, that He might fulfill the scriptures concerning Him “for He will save His people from their sins.”
Let me remind you that the cross and the death of Jesus were not some unfortunate accident.
The death of Jesus on the cross was not “Plan B”.
The death of Jesus was planned long before this world was ever created,
The death of Christ was an excruciating death with much suffering, mocking, rejection and ridicule in the process.
Even the cross Jesus died upon was an unknown thing to the Jews, especially when His death was prophesied of in the OT.
Psalm 22 is one of the greatest pictures of the coming death of the Messiah in the Old Testament apart from Isaiah 53.
The psalm opens with the words our Lord spoke on the cross, “My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?” (v.
1; cf.
Matt.
27:46).
Verses 6–8 predict the scorn and mockery heaped on Jesus by His enemies: [v.6-8, cf.
Luke 23:35-39]
Verse 16 is an obvious reference to the Roman crucifixion.
[cf.
all four Gospels]
Verses 14–17 describe the physical suffering the Lord endured on the cross: [cf.
all four Gospels]
Verse 18 accurately records the detail that His executioners would divide up Jesus’ garments: (v.
18; cf.
Luke 23:34).
Rise again the third day- from death to life again, RESURRECTION!
Although Jesus detailed his death, He also detailed His resurrection!
Jesus’ resurrection was also prophesied in the OT.
Jesus accurately fulfilled the Scriptures concerning Him in every way.
And if we believe that about His death, burial and resurrection, then we should seek the Scriptures for truth to guide our lives instead of it being the last resource!
When it comes to marriage, family and raising kids why do we seek advice from every source around us except the Word of God? [Eph.
5:22-6:4/Book of Proverbs]
When it comes to our finances, God’s Word is the perfect financial planner for our lives.
[Mt.
6:19-34, 20:1-16, Eph.
6:5-9, Col. 3:22-25].
But it starts here;
When it comes to our worship and service in Christ, the Bible is the only resource that is true for you and I to have abundant life in Him.
Close;
What do you believe?
What is your source for Truth?
If you can answer these two questions correctly in Christ, you will obtain a better and fulfilling life in 2022!
If not, you will still be desiring something you cannot obtain anywhere else except in Him!
