Luke 8:23–25 KJV 1900
23 But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy. 24 And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm. 25 And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him.
God knows exactly when to send the wind to do a purging. This wind has been used to run off the evil. The wind always comes with a purpose. For the disciples in our text. The wind came to try their faith!
Jesus rebuked the wind and the waves with AUTHORITY. The wind and the waves obeyed. The word rebuked in the original means to correctively rebuke the wind. Then he turned to the disciples and asked them “Where is your faith?”
The disciples were astonished at the authority that Jesus used when He spoke!
We should learn something from this situation: Jesus has the authority to step into our lives and rebuke whatever is bothering us and keeping us separated from Him. You don’t have to stress over your situation, your hangup, or your habits. Jesus has the authority and the power to step in and rebuke it. However, much of the time we lack the faith to reach out to the One Who has that authority!
He sends the wind not to destroy you but to blow away the clutter and unnecessary stuff that keeps you down! Many times we resent the wind, but in reality when it is finished you will look around and begin to see what it was that God was doing throughout that wind storm!
Acts 2:1–2 KJV 1900
1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
There was a mighty wind that came on the day of Pentecost that brought with it the infilling of the Holy Ghost! Those that were ready to receive it did, there were others that looked down on it, but God anointed the Preacher and he preached with conviction and many others were changed!
Matthew 7:24–29 KJV 1900
24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: 25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. 26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: 27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it. 28 And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine: 29 For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
It’s not hard to understand, that if we will hear the Word that God speaks to us, no matter how violent the wind, if we have obeyed our house WILL WITHSTAND the wind!
However, if we do not, our house will fall!
Ephesians 4:11–16 KJV 1900
11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: 13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: 14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; 15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: 16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
Ephesians 4:14 NLT
14 Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth.
It’s not the will of God that any of us continually get blown around by the winds of whatever comes our way. It’s not always the devil that is causing the wind to blow! Sometimes it is God checking to see how sturdy our house is!
We need the church so that we may remain stedfast!
We need the preaching in order to stay stedfast!
We need each other to remain stedfast!
The whole body TOGETHER is what keeps us from floundering out in the wind! If we are locked in with our brothers and sisters we stand a much greater chance of not being pulled away!
A Saint that prays together stays together!
A Family that prays together stays together!
A Church that prays together stays together!
We need one another today more than we ever have!
