THOUGHTS TO CONSIDER

The Presentation of the King (ch. 1-2)

The Preparation of the King (ch. 3-4)

He is Anointed (ch.3) He is Tested (ch.4:1-11) His Mission begins (ch 4:12-16)
His forerunner, John, completes his Mission (ch.4:12)
He settles in Capernaum - the Prophet of Mercy (ch.4:13-16)

THOUGHTS TO GRASP

A Royal Proclamation: The Presence of the Kingdom

Jesus proclaims the presence of the Kingdom (ch.4:17)
“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!”
Since the King has arrived, the Kingdom must be near.
“The Kingdom of God” meant the reign, the rule and authority of God.
Many understood kingdom as a physical entity - hoping for an end to the Roman occupation.
Israel would receive its new King, Rome defeated and the kingdom established.
“if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.” From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing (Mt. 12:28)…
“The kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation… it is within you!”
We must become like little children to enter…
“For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power” (1 Co. 4:20).

A Radical Invitation: The Pursuit of the Kingdom - “Follow Me!”

Who were the recipients of the call?
In Matthew’s gospel He calls the poor, weak, sick, insignicant… He calls sinners!
He calls shepherds, prostitutes, blind, lame, lowly, without wealth, rank or power!
Jesus now calls Fishermen...
Notice How He called them!
Peter, Andrew, James and John had already spent time with Jesus.
They had returned to their homes and their business.
This was not an invitation to walk with Jesus along the shore.
This was the RADICAL call of discipleship - “Follow me!” - Leave everything!
It meant leaving everything - consider the Parables of the kingdom.
The kingdom must take priority - seek first the kingdom of God!
Notice How they respond to the call
If the King has arrived, then the Kingdom must be near; and if Kingdom is near; then we must respond.
Matthew highlights the theme of leaving throughout chapter 4
Satan “left” Jesus;
Jesus “left” Nazareth;
Peter and Andrew “leave their nets”;
James and John “left their boat”
This invitation will bring about a radical change.
They would leave their old way of life, and follow Jesus fully - TO BE WITH HIM!
They were to be fishers of men - persuading others, compelling others to come in.
Consider King David’s Call:
“He chose David his servant and took him from the sheep pens; from tending the sheep he brought him to be the shepherd of his people Jacob, of Israel his inheritance. And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skilful hands he led them.”

A Remarkable Demonstration: The Power of the Kingdom

In the miracles of Christ, Matthew wants us to see our Powerful & Compassionate King.
Jesus has authority and power over demons, over creation, over sickness, over death
He has authority to forgive sins, and “who goes about doing good!”
He never rejected anyone who came to Him.
When we see mercy, miracles & salvations, we know the Kingdom is near.
J C Ryle Quote:
“There is no broken heart that He cannot heal. There is no wound of conscience that He cannot cure. Fallen, crushed, bruised, plague-stricken as we all are by sin, Jesus by His blood and Spirit can make us whole. Only let us go to Him.”

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

The King is Here! And if the King is Here, then his Kingdom is near you right now!

Our Powerful and Compassionate King desires to touch your heart and soul this morning.
He is the same yesterday, today and forever!

If the Kingdom is near, then please respond and COME TO HIM this morning.

To those who feel unloved, broken, crushed, bruised, wounded.
He can touch and heal you!

If the Kingdom is near, will you also respond and GO FOR HIM!”.

“And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give” (Mt. 10:7–8).
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations” (Mt. 28:19–20).
Compel and Persuade them to come in, Love them in, and Pray them in…
