Encanto: use gifts for others, but not sum of your gifts!

We let gifts, abilities, accomplishments, vices, sins, failures define us. (Lens for miraculous catch of fish)

Fishermen work all night to catch fish – nothing.

Jesus tells Peter to let down nets again. Hopeless!

‘I’m a professional fisherman. Some carpenter from Nazareth thinks he knows better than me?’
“Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.”
Faith is not emotion! Faith with reluctance! At the risk of embarrassing God…

Abundance of fish! Nets tore, boats begin to sink!

Not just lucky/natural. Jesus didn’t say try again, He did it.

Fascinating turn: Peter compelled to confess sin.
Peter believed he was sum of his sins – fear!
“Do not be afraid.” Gospel!
“You are right to be afraid, but My lordship is not the kind of thing that sinners need to run from. Peter, you are no longer the sum of your sins, failures, vices.”

“From now on you will be catching men.”

What does that mean? Redefining people according to Jesus.

Not sum of gifts, abilities, accomplishments, vices, sins, failures, but redefined by Gospel.
Who’s the real Fisherman? Jesus!
Everything is dependent on God’s provision, even fishing: it’s His world, His responsibility.
Catch of fish is preview of Gospel’s success!

Do you define yourself according to your gifts, abilities, accomplishments, vices, sins, failures? (YES.)

Naturally, you are right to do so!

Only one who has intrinsic value (not works) is Jesus.
But Jesus accepts all responsibility to accomplish everything needed, gives you worth apart from work
In Christ, you are not the sum of your sins, vices, failures gifts, abilities, accomplishments. (cross)
Do not be afraid. You have been captured by Jesus.

Jesus gives new way to see callings (catching men)

Important! Even mundane ones! Jesus’ job to care for world.

It’s Jesus’s world, HIS boat, fish, job, responsibility.
We think world will fall apart if we aren’t best mom, dad, family member, friend, boss, employee, pastor

You aren’t Jesus. Drop everything: worry, guilt, anxiety, burdens; abundantly generous God uses gifts!

Following God is doing what He calls you to do. Even if it seems hopeless. At risk of embarrassing God...
He knows you’re a sinner. Don’t go confidently in callings because you can do them, but b/c Jesus can.

World of sinners who need hope, defined by sin/death

Jesus in business of redefining sinners by His cross.
He can do it! Don’t doubt the power of the Gospel!
Jesus takes full responsibility for all of it, even the small stuff. Go confidently, trusting that He is enough
When Jesus goes fishing, watch out! It’s going to be a ridiculously abundant catch!
