During the Middle Ages a group of monks decided to love God with all their hearts, minds, and souls, as Jesus commanded in the greatest commandment (Mt 22:36–37). They wanted to know not only what drew them to God, but also what drew them away. They compiled a list of basic sins from which all other sins originate. These came to be known as “The Seven Deadly Sins.” The worst and most dangerous of all sins is first on the list. Do you know what it is? Pride
Proverbs 6:16–19 NKJV
16 These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: 17 A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, 18 A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, 19 A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren.

1. What is Pride; 17a

What pride is not- Pride is not receiving honor or self-respect in what you do.
When someone says, “I’m proud of you!” there’s nothing wrong with that if it’s said and recieved in encouragement or praise for something well done.
Romans 13:7 NKJV
7 Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor.
1 Peter 3:7 NKJV
7 Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.
Ephesians 5:33 NKJV
33 Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
Pride- It is “an attitude of the heart that overvalues oneself and undervalues others.” It is an attitude of independence from God. It is saying, “God, I don’t need you; I can do it myself.”

2. Pride is the Original Sin;

A proud look is mentioned first in verse 17 for several reasons.
First it is the original sin!
It was pride that made the devil the devil. The devil, to begin with, was the most glorious being that God had ever created. The Bible says that “he was full of wisdom and beauty; he sealed up the sum.” (Ezekiel 28:12) God had never made anyone more exquisitely beautiful, more wise, more powerful than Lucifer, the son of the morning. Lucifer actually means “light bearer.” Lucifer was perfect in all his ways until iniquity was found in him. And that iniquity was pride!

Ezekiel 28:15 NKJV
15 You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, Till iniquity was found in you.
1 Timothy 3:6 NKJV
6 not a novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil.
Isaiah 14:13–14 NKJV
13 For you have said in your heart: ‘I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation On the farthest sides of the north; 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.’
Pride is the sin of Adam and Eve in the fall in the garden
Satan led Adam and Eve into sin by appealing to their pride
Genesis 3:4–5 NKJV
4 Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
The very essence of pride is trying to be your own god. Prideful people say, “I can make my own rules and live like I want. I can live by my own morals and standards.”
I was reading some months ago something very interesting. If you have an apple, and you look at that apple, and that apple has a wormhole in it, you might think, “Uh oh, I’d better be careful: there is a worm in that apple.” No, there is no worm in that apple. That hole is not there so the worm could get in. That hole is there so the worm could get out. The worm did not bore into that apple; the worm bored his way out of that apple. The worm was already in the apple. You say, “Now, wait a minute, Pastor. How did the worm get in the apple?” It was born in the apple. It was hatched in the apple. “Well, how did that happen?” Because the egg was laid in the apple blossom. The apple blossom became an apple, and that worm was on the inside, and it ate its way out.
And the pride that is in your heart is there because it was born in your heart. And, you see, it’s what’s in your heart. When the worm comes to the surface, the worm was already there in your heart. And, you see, Jesus said in Mark the seventh chapter, beginning about verse 18, that it’s not what goes into a man that defiles him; it’s not the worm that bores into him; it’s what comes out of a man that defiles him.” And then Jesus said, “For out of the heart proceeds pride.” (Mark 7:18–23)

The Lord hates pride and it is an abomination to Him
Hate—“An emotional attitude toward persons or things which are opposed, detested, despised and with which one wishes to have no contact or relationship”. Hate is the polar opposite of love. Hate literally means “to exclude from fellowship.” God cannot bear to fellowship with those who exhibit the tendencies of pride.
Abomination—This word refers to something which is “loathed or which causes horror”.
Homosexuality—Lev. 18:22–30; 20:13
Idolatry—Deut. 7:25
Human Sacrifice—Deut. 12:31
Eating Ritually Unclean Animals—Deut. 14:3–8
Sacrificing Defective Animals—Deut. 17:1
Engaging In Occult Practices—Deut. 18:9–14
Dishonest Business Practices—Deut. 25:13–16
Ritual Prostitution—1 Kings 14:23ff

People who commit these sins and remain in them will incur the judgment of God!
Proverbs 16:5 NKJV
5 Everyone proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord; Though they join forces, none will go unpunished.
Psalm 50:22 NKJV
22 “Now consider this, you who forget God, Lest I tear you in pieces, And there be none to deliver:
Proverbs 29:1 NKJV
1 He who is often rebuked, and hardens his neck, Will suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.

3. Avoiding the Pitfalls of Pride;

The only thing that can help us avoid pride is to be humble. Humility will push pride out of our hearts.
James 4:6–7 NKJV
6 But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” 7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
The key to humility is submission to God!
Ask God to search our hearts, because the heart is where the seed of sin is;
Jeremiah 17:9 NKJV
9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?
Psalm 139:23–24 NKJV
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; 24 And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.
Remember the source of our blessings;
A prideful person believes everything they have they made it on their own. A humble man knows that everything he has or is came from God!
1 Timothy 6:17 NKJV
17 Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy.
James 1:17–18 NKJV
17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. 18 Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.
Start serving others instead of being selfish; Pride is selfishness, serving is humility
Hours before Jesus was arrested and went to Calvary, his disciples were arguing which one of them would be considered the greatest in the coming kingdom. Then Jesus shares the Passover meal with them and then institutes the Lord’s Supper.
Does anyone remember what Jesus did before He instituted the Lord’s Supper? He washed the feet of the disciples as an act of humble service to the prideful!
John 13:5 NKJV
5 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.
John 13:12–17 NKJV
12 So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? 13 You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. 16 Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
Close;
Proverbs 13:10 NKJV
10 By pride comes nothing but strife, But with the well-advised is wisdom.
To avoid the Pitfalls of Pride we must to love Wisdom!
