To prepare, to equip
To prepare, to equip
The Christian has many tools provided to them to prepare them and to equip them for the works of service. This morning we are looking at one of the greatest tools, the scripture, all scripture.
Elders in Ephesus were prepared through the word of God’s grace (Act20:28-32)
It is always better to allow the word to speak for itself.
28 “Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. 29 “I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock;
30 and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them. 31 “Therefore be on the alert, remembering that night and day for a period of three years I did not cease to admonish each one with tears.
32 “And now I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified.
The word was commended to the elders to build them up, to give them an inheritance for not just them but for all who are sanctified, and who is that? It is the church!
Timothy, the evangelist in Ephesus was prepared through the purposed word (2Tim3:14-17)
Through admonishment
The teaching, the correction, the challenge for application.
Through reference
To Timothy it was what was taught, the O.T. scriptures that were useful then, and are useful today (more on this in a bit)
Through it’s value being made known
We are going to talk about value through several sources, with the scripture being the primary source
And, finally it’s promised results, that the man of God would be fully equipped.
So, this morning I would like for us to look at the value, by:
The admonishment (2Tim3:14)
The value of the things learned (2Tim3:15-16)
The result of the things learned (2Tim3:17)
The Admonishment
The Admonishment
Timothy had been a student of Paul, a companion with Paul and trusted by Paul. He was left in Ephesus to carry on with the work. Paul offers the challenge, the admonishment with a purpose, with an understanding the Timothy would have known, and applied.
14 You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them,
What is the challenge issued?
To continue in what he was already doing
To remember where he learned to do what he was doing. (Paul, Lois, Eunice, mission experience)
(Transition) hum, continue, here are some scriptures to note down and consider.
Continue in God’s grace (Act13:43)
act13:43 “43 Now when the meeting of the synagogue had broken up, many of the Jews and of the God-fearing proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, were urging them to continue in the grace of God.”
Continue in your faith (Act14:22; Col1:23)
act14:22 “22 strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying, “Through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.””
23 if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, was made a minister.
What kind of faith is noted in (Col1:23)?
Firm faith, established faith, that is steadfast
Continue in His kindness (Rom11:22)
22 Behold then the kindness and severity of God; to those who fell, severity, but to you, God’s kindness, if you continue in His kindness; otherwise you also will be cut off.
Continue in your love (Heb13:1)
heb13:1 “1 Let love of the brethren continue.”
Sometimes to continue means to persevere, to not give up, to press on and may not be easy. But, if we are honest we have been taught salvation is easy but Christianity is challenging. Hence why Paul issues this admonishment to Timothy.
(Transition) so, having said that may we continue this morning in our passage and for our understanding and application?
Value of things learned
Value of things learned
When you think about value, what do you think about? People, things, feelings, memories? The definition (Oxford dictionary) of value is the regard that something is held to deserve; the importance, worth, or usefulness of something.
15 and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;
So, from young age Timothy had know about the sacred writings, there is some good information to make a pit stop here about the sacred writings.

The sacred writings were
Holy Scriptures (The Old Testament)
The N.T. was not written, completed yet, it was being written at this time.
Holy Scriptures, how someone looks at the scriptures is important, they are sacred, holy and set apart for specific purpose. We must treat it as holy.
One commentator said “They way we treat the Bible shows others how much or how little we respect it.”
Sacred writing revealed history
From Creation to prophesy
From the Exodus and the law
To rebellion, captivity and return
They offered hope (Rom15:3-4)
3 For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me.” 4 For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
They brought wisdom, and salvation through faith (v.15)
15 and you know that from childhood you have known the sacred Scriptures, which are able to give you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
(expand on that!) - be sure to add in that we are not saved by believing the bible, but by believing the One the Bible teaches about, and putting our faith and trust In Him.
Sacred writings reveal man cannot save himself (Jn5:39, 3:18-21)
Jn5:39 “39 “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me;”
Timothy was raised in a godly home, taught by Lois and Eunice, but it was not until Paul preached the gospel to him that he was saved.
The sacred writings reveals our need for salvation, it shows us the the law we are depraved sinners in need of a Savior. It also makes it clear we cannot save ourselves
18 “He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 “This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil.
20 “For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 “But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.”
The sacred writings reveal God’s plan, scheme of redemption (Jn3:16-18)
16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. 17 “For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.
18 “He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
That Christ came and He died for our sins
Sacred writings give us assurance of our salvation (1Jn5:13)
13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.
Sacred writings are true and dependable, trustworthy (v.16)
For God is the God of truth (Deu32:4)
Jesus is truth (Jn14:6)
Spirit is truth (1Jn5:6)
Thy word is truth (Jn17:17)
The Holy Spirit used men of God to write the Word of God (consider 2Pt1:20-21)
20 But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, 21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
Inspired words is inspired influence by the Holy Spirit to convey the words of God to accomplish the will of God.
The sacred writings are profitable (v.16)
(Do not need to read below, it is only for the outline)
When you look at (v.16) What is the sacred writing, scripture good for, can you give examples of each thing?
16 Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another—showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God’s way.
(Take time and expand on each of these)
Truth/doctrine (what is right)
reproof/exposing rebellion (what is wrong)
Correcting (teach how to get right)
training/instruction (how to stay right)
Sacred writings equip us for service (v.17)
Paul previously had called Timothy a man of God
1Tim6:11 “11 But flee from these things, you man of God, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness.”
May we remember that this letter is for training in righteousness for Timothy to teach other men to be men of God.
17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Man of God, be in good company with men such as Moses, Samuel, Elijah, Elisha, and David.
Not only being a man of God but a man of God who is complete (NKJV); Perfect (KJV); Adequate (NASB); Complete and proficient (AMP); Fully qualified (GNT).
Another word to notice in this verse is equipped (NKJV); throughly equipped (ISV); Perfectly equipped (WNT); Furnished (ASV)
Equipped with a purpose “For every good work”
According to Eph2:10 “10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” - good works prepared, good works that are to be walked in. This series is about application as the church is it not? Our theme this years is about application about being engaged!
A few little things I want to bring in about the God breathed word.
It develops wisdom when applied, bringing salvation (2Tim3:15)
2tim3:15 “15 and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” (expand on this)
It offers hope (Rom15:3-4)
rom15:3-4 “3 For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me.” 4 For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.”
It admonishes (1Cor10:11; Heb3:12-19; Jm5:7-11; 2Pt1:3:
1cor10:11 “. . . they were written for our instruction
James says in (5:7-11) be patient; the inspired word admonishes the believer to be patient, even in suffering, and to be full of compassion and be merciful.
2pt1:3
3 seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.
True knowledge of Him who called us (Expand on this)
3 Everything that goes into a life of pleasing God has been miraculously given to us by getting to know, personally and intimately, the One who invited us to God. The best invitation we ever received!
