I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.
In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it.
so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other.
Divisions over
which teacher or leader with whom they identified - chapters 1-4, where he describes them as have strife and jealousy, quarreling, arrogance or boasting (24x in the two books)
Thinking they knew better than others: 1 Cor 3:18, and 1 Cor 8:2.
Superior attitudes and arrogant [6x in 1 Corinthians (1 Cor 4.6; 4.18; 4.19; 5.2; 8.1; 13.4) ]
Division over the acceptance of immoral behavior
Division over taking others to court
Division over depriving one another in the areas of asceticism and marriage
Divisions over the use of their liberties
Divisions in their attitudes toward one another, and how they treated one another, even when coming together to remember the Lord.
Divisions over who is greater in the church, who has the greater spiritual gifts
Paul has been pointing out the main problem is arrogance, pride, being puffed up. He has been point to this and hinting at the solution.
Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that “We all possess knowledge.” But knowledge puffs up while love builds up.
He has been pointing to the outworking of this pride and showing the proper attitudes as he tells them to stop seeking their own good and seek the good of others.
Now, in chapter 13 he is at the climax of the letter. He is going to some up in 13 verses, what the solution to of the division in the church. What the solution to all of the division in our lives and relationships is:
True Love.
If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.
If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.
If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.
For we know in part and we prophesy in part,
but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears.
When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me.
For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
Without it...
Without it...
Clanging cymbal
Clanging cymbal
Irritating and annoying.
I am Nothing
I am Nothing
I Gain Nothing
I Gain Nothing
“But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them.
Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back.
Do to others as you would have them do to you.
“If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.
And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that.
And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full.
But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.
Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
What is it like? What does love do?
What is it like? What does love do?
Is Patient
Is Patient
Long suffering
μακροτυμέω involves exercising understanding and patience toward persons while ὑπομένω (5278) involves putting up with things or circumstances. Spiros Zodhiates, The Complete Word Study Dictionary: New Testament (Chattanooga, TN: AMG Publishers, 2000).
The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
Is Kind
Is Kind
obliging, willing to help or assist
that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
Does not envy
Does not envy
This word encompasses envy, as in wishing you had what the other has, but it also encompasses resentment
You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God.
Does not boast
Does not boast
brag, self-importance, wanting others to notice
outward action, followed by...
Is not proud
Is not proud
puffed up, inward attitude
Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that “We all possess knowledge.” But knowledge puffs up while love builds up.
Does not dishonor others
Does not dishonor others
NASB - act unbecomingly; rude, lewd, crude behavior, disgraceful, dishonorable, indecent, dishonors others, and is attention seeking
Is not self-seeking
Is not self-seeking
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,
not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
Is not easily angered
Is not easily angered
How slow is God to wrath over sin
The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.
Keeps no record of wrongs
Keeps no record of wrongs
You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.
Does not delight in evil

Rejoices with the truth

Always Protects
Always Protects
Bears all things, endures
If others have this right of support from you, shouldn’t we have it all the more? But we did not use this right. On the contrary, we put up with anything rather than hinder the gospel of Christ.
Hatred stirs up conflict, but love covers over all wrongs.
Always Trusts

Always Hopes

Always Perseveres
Always Perseveres
You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.
Never Fails
Never Fails
never falls to ruins, never ceases. Notice the next verses deal with things that will end.
Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.
For we know in part and we prophesy in part,
but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy.
