Background:

NOTE: Habakkuk is living in a day of corruption and violence. (1:2-4) This has made it somewhat difficult to determine the time of Writing because Judah and Israel found themselves in this situation a lot.

A. 2 Kings 21:1-2 Manasseh began to reign at age 12 and he “did what was evil in the sight of the Lord.” He reigned 55 years (687-643 BC)

B. 2 Kings 21:19-26 Manasseh’s son Amon begins to reign and he “did what was evil in the sight of the Lord.” He reigned 3 years (643-640 BC)

C. 2 Kings 22:1-2 Josiah, Amon’s son, reigns from (640-609 BC) He “does what is right in the sight of the Lord”.

1. They find the book of the law in the house of the Lord. (2 Kings 22:8)

2. In reading the law Josiah pronounces

2 Kings 22:13 NASB95

13 “Go, inquire of the Lord for me and the people and all Judah concerning the words of this book that has been found, for great is the wrath of the Lord that burns against us, because our fathers have not listened to the words of this book, to do according to all that is written concerning us.”

NOTE: This means trouble. The history of God’s people is not Karma, it is blessing and cursing. When God’s people obey Him and follow His ways they experience His blessing and when they serve other gods and themselves they are disciplined and receive what the world has to offer. (Death, hate, destruction, etc)

3. 2 Kings 23:3, 4-47 Josiah Covenants to do all the Lord commands with all of His heart and the people agree. He then cleans house of all the cult worship, mediums, spiritists, etc and there was “no king like him who turned to the Lord with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his might . . . nor did any arise after him.” (2 Kings 23:25)

NOTE: The Lord however did not take away this coming judgment. (Huldah’s prophecy 2 Kings 15-16)

2 Kings 23:26 (NASB95)

26 However, the Lord did not turn from the fierceness of His great wrath with which His anger burned against Judah, because of all the provocations with which Manasseh had provoked Him.

D. Approximately 609-605 BC Egypt defeats Judah and Pharoah Neco king of Egypt kills Josiah in battle. (2 Chron. 35:20-27, 2 Kings 23:28-29)

E. The people make Jehoahaz, son of Josiah, as king but he only reigns for 3 months. “he did evil in the sight of the Lord.” (2 Kings 23:30-31)

F. Neco arrests Jehoahaz and installs Jehoiakim as king in Jerusalem “and he did evil in the sight of the Lord his God.” (2 Chron 36:5) He reigns 11 years (609-598)

G. The year is around 606 to 604 B.C. Babylon under the rule of King Nebuchadnezzer has defeated Assyria and Egypt at the battle of Carchemish. (2 Chron. 36:6-7)

“Jehoiakim became his servant for three years; then he turned and rebelled against him” (2 Kings 24:1)

Nebuchadnezzer installs Zedekiah as king over Judah and Jerusalem. Zedekiah “did evil in the sight of the Lord his God; he did not humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet who spoke for the Lord.” (2 Chron. 36:12) Babylon in 605 would take its first captive which included Daniel and the three Hebrew children. (2 Chron. 36:20) (Daniel 1:1)

NOTE: Some Scholars believe it was shortly after Jehoiakim was installed as king that Habakkuk wrote about the lack of justice and perversions that surrounded them all. Jewish tradition holds to Habakkuk writing during the days of Manasseh which is what Judah was being judged for. We can safely say he wrote sometime “Pre-exilic”, before the exile in 605 BC.

The Author

A. All we really know about Habakkuk is his name and that he was a “prophet” (Hab. 1:1)

NOTE: Some times you get the prophets Father’s name (Isa.1:1) or kings who are reigning (Hosea 1:1) or a hometown (Amos 1:1)

B. Even the Hebrew for his name is divided which could mean “embracer” or “embraced”

NOTE: Most scholars agree he was a “preexilic” prophet who wrote During Manasseh or Jehoiakim’s reign. “Shigionoth” (3:1) is Hebrew for a “highly emotional poetic form with rapid changes of rhythm. This gives us a little more insight on Habakkuk. He must have been educated and as some believe an “ordained prophet who took part in temple liturgical singing.” (The Bible Knowledge Comm.)

The Organization of the Book

THEMES: Faith in the face of trials. (2:4,20) Life isn’t fair and human sin destroys. (2:14) Its always a good time to pray.

I. Habakkuk: “I’m Doing Something”

A. Why This Corruption and Why Correct us like this God? (Habakkuk 1:2-4; 1:12-2:1)

1. How Long will we cry out because of Violence, How long must we see iniquity and destruction, strife, contention and justice comes out perverted? (Hab. 1:2-4)

2. Why would the “everlasting God”, “my Holy One”, “O Rock”, who doesn’t approve of evil, Correct us with someone worse than us? (Hab. 1:12-2:1)

B. I’m Doing something in Your Days! (Habakkuk 1:5-11; 2:2-20)

1. When you live like the rest of the world this is what you get. (Hab. 1:5-11)

a. They are fierce and seizes places that are not theirs. V.6

b. They are dreaded and feared and justice originates with themselves. V.7

c. They come for violence and they collect captives. V.9

2. You might want to Run, these things will happen! (Habakkuk 2:2-20)

a. This prophecy will not fail. V.3 Though it tarries, wait for it. (Rev. will come)

b. The righteous will live by his faith. V.4-5

c. Your love for materialism and passivity for people to be saved will bring destruction. V.6-20

C. Remember Who God is! (Habakkuk 3:3-15)

D. Learn How to Live as you wait for His Salvation. (Habakkuk 3:16-19)

CLOSE SESSION 1: Things To Think About

In all of the religious talk about moral decay, spiritual turmoil, and coming judgment Do God’s people have an intense resolve to see people’s lives changed through salvation in Christ? Are we standing for biblical truth?

Will we as believers remain faithful as the world continues to burn literally as well as metaphorical for sinful desires?

Do we understand that the danger of judgment is real and potentially close at hand? (Revelation)

Why All The Corruption? Habakkuk 1:2-4

INTRO: How Long will I call for help, and you will not hear. If Habakkuk is writing during Manasseh’s reign then we can add clarity to these words Habakkuk uses in the opening verses.

This is the state we sometimes find ourselves in and yet it is in God’s silence where the true character of a person is revealed. Habakkuk says “I cry out to You. . . Which is not just a complaint but a desire to know, This is not just a selfish cry for God to fix things but a call from one of God’s children who is suffering in the midst of a sinful and unjust world because they know He is their only hope.

A. “Violence”

B. Habakkuk is made to see iniquity and look on wickedness. (3a) “trouble, sorrow, wickedness”

C. Strife exists and contention arises. (3b)

D. “Therefore the Law is ignored and justice is never upheld.” (4)

NOTE: Habakkuk’s cry is not unfamiliar

Genesis 6:11 NASB95

11 Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, and the earth was filled with violence.

NOTE: This is the same word used by Habakkuk 1:2 for “violence”. It is the Hebrew (ha-mas) “Violence, wrong done to me.”

Exodus 32:6–7 NASB95

6 So the next day they rose early and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play. 7 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, “Go down at once, for your people, whom you brought up from the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves.

NOTE: Moses was delayed from coming down from mount Sinai. The Hebrews had Aaron make them an idol to worship as the one who brought them out of Egypt. V.6 says they eat, drank and “Rose up to play” (sa-heq) “laugh, sport, conjugal caresses.” Gen. 26:8 V.7 “have corrupted themselves” is the same Hebrew word as in Genesis 6:11 “the earth was corrupt”

NOTE: Humans continue this cycle of Sin, Slavery, Supplication, Salvation . . . .

The Reign of Manasseh

ILLUST: If Habakkuk wrote during Manasseh of Judah’s reign then this is the violence, wickedness, strife and perverted justice he was speaking of.

1. Manasseh undid the good his father Hezekiah did, Manasseh re-established the high places.

2. Baal : Judges 3:7 He was supreme god worshipped in Canaan, fertility god who was believed to enable the earth to produce crops and people to produce children (gotquestions.org) 1 Kings 18:1-28 Elijah defeats the prophets of Baal. Molech deity of the Ammonites 1 Kings 11, Leviticus 18:21. Israel was warned not to offer up their children to Molech. Some believe Molech is the same as Baal. 1 Kings 21:6 syas “He made his son pass through the fire . . . (pic is syrian icon for Baal)

The Case for a world that is due for judgment

Violence, Iniquity and Wickedness

ILLUST: Commercials, TV shows and movies, are full of iniquity and wickedness. You cannot watch one show without being “made to see iniquity.”

90% of News broadcasts are informing us of the wickedness and violence that is exposed and hidden.

2022 super bowl, as they scan to the wealthy in their private sweets doing whatever they do with 70 some thousand fans and millions in their living room watched a half time show performing songs:

“California Love” Sex and Partying( Dr. Dre).

“In Da Club” Drugs, Alcohol, Sex, foul language (50 Cent)

“Family Affair” Dance Party to let your body be free and lose your mind. (Mary J. Blige)

“Alright” Kindred Lamar Foul language, gang banging, mixed with buddhism, with a hint of being lost and needing God but everything gonna be “alright”

NOTE: “Yes Destruction and violence are before me; Strife exists and contention arises” (Hab. 1:3b)

The elite powers are using race to divide and separate. They appear to appease the cry for justice for our African American brothers and sister by having and entire halftime show with only one white male rapper, Emninem, along with and entire cast black rappers and dancers singing about sex, drugs, alcohol, and gang banging, the very sins that are why all races are in the state of strife and violence that we are in. Where are the people crying out “HOW LONG”, “WHY”??

ILLUST: When you hear of Spirit Cooking: Um... what? The top trend on Twitter on Friday morning relates to an alleged email released by WikiLeaks. The alleged email to Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta mentions a spirit cooking dinner. WikiLeaks tweeted that this involves "blood, sperm and breastmilk." Spirit cooking refers to performance artist Marina Abramovic's "cookbook" of recipes to cook up thoughts -- not meals. However, some on Twitter are taking it to the extreme and accusing the former secretary of state of devil worship.(2016 cnet.com)

This is the world we find ourselves in, similar to Habakkuk.

Christianity today in 2020 wrote that christians in Iran were fast approaching 1 Mil.

According to CBN report 2018 the largest growing christian group of people in the US is the Latino population.

2. July of 2021 Christianity today reported that protestant and evangelicals are still declining in the U.S. while the unaffiliated or “nones” have grown to nearly 30% of the population.

3. According to the "Open Doors” in 2022 the No. 1 most dangerous place to be a Christian is Afghanistan , North Korea comes in no. 2, Iran is no. 9 and its reported that 360 million Christinas live in high level persecution areas. (Christianity today)
