Instructions/Command

Instructions/standards for service is what this series has been and is about. Today we are focusing on the proclamation of God’s word. It is a given instruction, given command.
2 Timothy 4:1–2 NASB95
1 I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: 2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.
2 Timothy 4:3–4 NASB95
3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, 4 and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.
The judge of the living and the dead, the day of judgment is forthcoming and Timothy is given the charge (v.1).
The charge is about the proclaiming of God’s word (vv.2-4).
A charge to be carefully considered and applied as originally given in great commission (Mk16:15)
Mark 16:15 NASB95
15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.
According to Bible Study tools it says about proclaim, it defines it as:
Preach, Proclaim
The word for "preach, " "proclaim" in the Greek New Testament is kerysso [khruvssw]. It is used thirty-two times in the Gospels, but about half of these are parallel occurrences within the Synoptic Gospels. "Proclaim" is complementary to the more specific term "evangelize" (euangelizomai) or the phrase "announce the good news, " which contains within its meaning the object that is announced or proclaimed — the good news. However, usually when "proclaim" (kerysso [khruvssw]) is used the context includes its object, which in the majority of instances is the gospel or Jesus. The noun proclaimer, herald (keryx), refers to one who proclaims news publicly.
While the instructions are given to Timothy an evangelist who is at the church of Ephesus at this time, we can still learn from it and apply can we not?
There is preaching that pleases God and, well, if we are honest there is preaching that does not please God as seen in the scripture. We will be looking at those two things this morning. But first we need to go back and glean from the scripture.
(Be ready to put the scripture slides back up)
These questions are on your outline for you to consider, think and answer from the scripture.
Gleaning from the scripture:
Who was charged, and why was he charged (implied) in (v.1)?
Timothy: in the presence of God and Christ Jesus
Why? Because Jesus is the judge of the living and the dead is coming back!
What was the charge (v.2)?
Preach the word, be ready in/out of season
He spells out how, by reproof, rebuke, exhortation with great patience and instructions.
The reason for the charge is described (vv.3-4) can you see it, describe it?
They will not endure sound doctrine
Will want ear tickling preaching
Will turn from the truth
(Transition) so, now may we look at together preaching/proclaiming that pleases God?

Preaching that pleases God.

There are things scripture says that tell us it pleases God, other things we can draw a conclusion that please God and that is what we are looking at this morning. Keep in mind that we are talking about proclaiming, and anyone, everyone should be prepared to proclaim Jesus.
Proclaiming that is always ready (2Tim4:2; 1Pt3:15; 1Tim4:13-16; 2Tim2:15, 3:14)
2 Timothy 4:2 The Message
2 so proclaim the Message with intensity; keep on your watch. Challenge, warn, and urge your people. Don’t ever quit. Just keep it simple.
We had read to be ready in season and out of season, in this version it is with intensity!
Part of our being ready, let me give you another verse to consider.
1 Peter 3:15 NASB95
15 but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;
There is an order here.
Be ready by being sanctified in Christ in your heart first - so know where you stand with Christ, how you stand with Christ
Then be ready to given an account, make a defense for the hope in you
And when you do it do it with gentleness and reverence.
Proclaiming the word is important and so is how it is proclaimed too.
Timothy had previously been told go give attention to the reading of the scripture and to his doctrine (see 1Tim4:13, 16)
Just as Timothy had to give attention, so do we, consider
2 Timothy 2:15 NASB95
15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.
How can you be diligent to present yourself approved? - By reading, by studying God’s word. By knowing of your own sanctification and where you stand with God and for God.
2 Timothy 3:14 NASB95
14 You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them,
Proclaiming that convinces (2Tim4:2; Act17:2-3, 19:8)
To convince: According to Oxford dictionary it is verb: cause (someone) to believe firmly in the truth of something.
Our proclaiming is with purpose! (expand)
Illustrate
Acts 17:2–3 NASB95
2 And according to Paul’s custom, he went to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures, 3 explaining and giving evidence that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus whom I am proclaiming to you is the Christ.”
As was Paul’s custom, another example Act19:8
Acts 19:8 NASB95
8 And he entered the synagogue and continued speaking out boldly for three months, reasoning and persuading them about the kingdom of God.
Boldly, reasoning, persuading them! About what? The kingdom of God!
Proclaiming that rebukes (2Tim4:2)
I had not forgotten the word before rebuke, it was reprove and it goes hand in hand with rebuke. To reprove is to reprimand, to censure. A rebuke is to:express sharp disapproval or criticism of (someone) because of their behavior or actions.
The proclaiming needs to be corrective in nature when needed. The first and foremost is that we are sinners in need of a Savior.
Proclaiming that exhorts (2Tim4:2)
To Exhort (verb) -strongly encourage or urge (someone) to do something.
What are we encouraging, urging someone to do? To respond to the gospel and to walk faithful in a manner worthy in which you were called!
Proclaiming that is patient (2Tim4:2; 1The5:14; 2Tim2:24-25)
It says with “great” patience. I need to remember that at times, You need to urge but not push; I have a hard time with that at times. Then I need to remember it took time with me to fully surrender and commit to Jesus too. And can still fall short now. so in our proclaiming, do it with much patience!
1 Thessalonians 5:14 NASB95
14 We urge you, brethren, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with everyone.
This patience is not only for the unsaved but the saved who are unruly, fainthearted, the weak. Be patient with all!
Listen to instructions previously given to Timothy (not on the screen, just quote it)
2tim2:24-25 “24 The Lord’s bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged, 25 with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth,”
Preaching that is biblically sound (2Tim4:2)
I don’t think I have used this one very often, consider what the Amplified bible says.
preach the word [as an official messenger]; be ready when the time is right and even when it is not [keep your sense of urgency, whether the opportunity seems favorable or unfavorable, whether convenient or inconvenient, whether welcome or unwelcome]; correct [those who err in doctrine or behavior], warn [those who sin], exhort and encourage [those who are growing toward spiritual maturity], with inexhaustible patience and [faithful] teaching.
The teaching, Thayer bible dictionary says in this verse “That which is taught, doctrine, teaching, concerning something; the act of teaching, instruction.
Gill says “in a way that is instructive and teaching, and in agreement with the doctrine of the scriptures. which are profitable for that purpose.”
(Transition) Proclaiming the word is to be at the ready, to be ready to be spoken, to be shared, to seek to persuade, to reprove, to rebuke, to exhort with great patience and instruction, teaching! - - for there is proclaiming that is not pleasing to God and we will look at that next.

Proclaiming that does not please God

For a time will come, a time is upon us where the proclaiming that pleases God is by popularity replaced by proclaiming that does not please God.
2 Timothy 4:3–4 NLT
3 For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will reject the truth and chase after myths.
(Leave the scripture on the screen as I go through the gleaning, please.
Gleaning from the scripture:
What was the time that was to come (v.3)?
They will not endure sound doctrine
Will desire teachers who will teach according to their own desires
There will a turning in (v.4) Can you see it?
Turn away from the truth
A turning aside to myths
The preaching that displeases God is:
Preaching/proclaiming unsound doctrine (2Tim4:3; 2Tim3:1-2; 1Tim1:10; 1Cor6:9-10)
Sound doctrine we have looked at and may we be reminded it is for the health of the body, and we are talking about building a healthy church right?
Barnes says: “Doctrine contributing to the health of the soul, or to salvation.”
(Insert warning picture here, should already be saved in program)
Paul had previously warned what was coming 1Tim4:1-2 “1 But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, 2 by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron,”
People were going to be persuaded away from the truth
Having conscience seared, what happens when something is seared? it is sealed in, it locks in what is inside!
Paul had also said this 2Tim3:1-2 “1 But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. 2 For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy,”
lovers of self, lovers of fleshly pleasure
2 Timothy 4:3 GNB
3 The time will come when people will not listen to sound doctrine, but will follow their own desires and will collect for themselves more and more teachers who will tell them what they are itching to hear.
what they want to hear is accepting sinful behavior vs being reproofed, rebuked for it.
As exampled in:
1 Timothy 1:10 NASB95
10 and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching,
These things, just like noted in 1Cor6:9-10 are unhealthy for the soul: 1Cor6:9-10 “9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.”
Preaching/proclaiming to entertain (2Tim4:3; Eze33:30-33)
Itching ear syndrome, do you think that is in the church today?
Ezekiel prophesied that was coming
Ezekiel 33:30 NASB95
30 “But as for you, son of man, your fellow citizens who talk about you by the walls and in the doorways of the houses, speak to one another, each to his brother, saying, ‘Come now and hear what the message is which comes forth from the Lord.’
Ezekiel 33:31 NASB95
31 “They come to you as people come, and sit before you as My people and hear your words, but they do not do them, for they do the lustful desires expressed by their mouth, and their heart goes after their gain.
Ezekiel 33:32 NASB95
32 “Behold, you are to them like a sensual song by one who has a beautiful voice and plays well on an instrument; for they hear your words but they do not practice them.
Ezekiel 33:33 NASB95
33 “So when it comes to pass—as surely it will—then they will know that a prophet has been in their midst.”
Clarke says “Endless curiosity, an insatiable desire of variety; and they get their ears tickled with language and the accent of the person, abandoning the good and faithful preacher for the fine speaker”
Oh there are many out there too who are more than willing to fill the bill.
Maybe you have heard the term “seeker friendly” - these are churches who preach messages that make seekers happy, not necessarily what is true, what is needed.
People who don’t have time to hear what God says, about what God commands they will turn aside to fables and believe unbiblical, untrue things
G.K. Chesterton (writer, philosopher, theologian) said this: “he who does not believe in God will believe in anything.”
Recently we were back in chapter 3 and read
2tim3:1
2 Timothy 3:1 NKJV
1 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come:
In fact we had a sermon entitled perilous times. Couple that with what we are looking at today at what Jude said.
Jude 3 NASB95
3 Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints.
jude4
Jude 4 NASB95
4 For certain persons have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.
We don’t have to look far to see this is true today.
People will turn from the truth because the truth makes them responsible and convicts them of sin.
People will reject the gospel of grace for a works of man salvation that cannot save them in the first place
People will reject sound doctrine for ear tickling preaching that is entertaining but not sound. That is a danger to the body (the believers) and the soul (of the person)
ROm6:17-18
Romans 6:17–18 NLT
17 Thank God! Once you were slaves of sin, but now you wholeheartedly obey this teaching we have given you. 18 Now you are free from your slavery to sin, and you have become slaves to righteous living.
(Invitation) have you wholeheartedly surrendered, obeyed the gospel that sets you free from the slavery of sin?
