CIT: Salvation does not come through what you know, but by what you confess, and is confirmed by how you live.

Unbelief of the Pharisees
Ignorance of the Disciples
Confession of Faith
Christian Living

Unbelief of the Pharisees

They asked for a sign even though one had already been given.
The sign that had been given was Jonah. He was thrown into the sea (death) as a sacrifice (cross) swallowed by a fish (grave) and spit out three days later (resurrection)
They were “Smart Skeptics”
Even with all their knowledge they still don’t believe the truth
Bart Ehrman is a good example. He is a world renowned New Testament Scholar, but here’s the catch, he’s an atheist. His whole life is studying the New Testament verse by verse trying to get its true meaning, but even though he is very smart he is still a skeptic of the true meaning of the New Testament, that Jesus is the Christ the Son of the Living God (Matthew 16:16)

Ignorance of the Disciples

They were focused on things of this world and not Jesus
They were literally too focused on bread to realize that Jesus was teaching them truth.
They were “Cultural Churchians”
Even though they were around Jesus constantly they were still more concerned with the world

Confession of Faith

People didn’t confess the truth
The people around them thought Jesus was just a prophet, a good teacher.
Peter confessed the truth
Peter rightly confessed That Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah, the Son of God
True belief results in true confession
Because the people did not believe they did not make the right confession
Because Peter believed he made the right confession
Romans 10:10 “For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.”
The Church is founded on this confession
Without this truth, that Jesus is God and is the Messiah, then all the other truths of the Church fall flat.
Matthew 16:18 “And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
This truth is given by God
No one can believe and confess this truth unless God reveals it to them, it is not mental ascent that will get you there.
Matthew 16:17 “And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.”
This truth conquers all evil
Caesarea Philippi was a place full of pagan temples and idols, ***start showing and explaining pictures from Israel***
The Truth of the gospel is still standing and moving, the gates of Hades has already fallen.

Christian Living

True Christian living requires consistent truth confession
Romans 8:5-6 “For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.”
Hebrews 10:23 “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.”
True Christian living requires self-denial
Self-denial for the cross is the best way of living and is where we find tru freedom
Our surrounding culture though teaches the opposite
Leaving the Church for a homosexual lifestyle
Culture
Living out a homosexual lifestyle is true freedom
Jesus
Matthew 16:26 “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?”

Conclusion

What we have seen tonight is that it does not matter how much you know about the Bible or how often you go to church, if you do not truly believe the message of the Gospel and confess its truth then you are not part of the Kingdom of God.
But we also see with very clear importance that once we have confessed the truth of the gospel in belief we must continue to believe and deny ourselves and follow Christ daily, which confirms that we have truly believed in Jesus.
This all happens though, not through your own effort but through the work of God in Christ through the Spirit.
