Timeline of Jesus’ last week on earth:
Day 7: Triumphal Entry -Palm Sunday

An impromptu worship service breaks out!
Matthew 21, Mark 11, Luke 19, and John 12 all record the “impromptu Worship service” that breaks out when people who had come to Jerusalem for the Passover feast hear of Jesus, coming into the city as well.
We are very familiar with this passage, as it is our custom to revisit the story each year on Palm Sunday. This year, I have decided to focus our messages leading up to Easter on each of the last seven days of Jesus’ life on earth. There is much that Jesus accomplishes in these last seven days, but we will focus on one event that happened on each of these days. A powerful event that happened seven days before the resurrection--- it was a parade of worship perhaps—It’s Palm Sunday— I’m doing this a little bit out of order--- but this “Triumphal Entry” has a deep application to not only our understanding of Who Jesus really was then-- but we read the passages knowing the “rest of the story”-- not just these last 6 days of Jesus’ earthly life-- not just of his death, burial, and glorious resurrection-- but the rest of the story as it applies to our own worship services today-- and Who Jesus IS today-- but also the rest of the history of the entire universe, when Jesus will triumphantly return and be recognized as the Lamb who is absolutely worthy of all praise and worship forever. We must understand not only who Jesus was-- but also who he is, and who He will be. I want us to examine together the Triumphal entry with these three dimensions of time in mind...
The Triumphant Entry teaches us:
Who Jesus was.
Who Jesus is.
Who Jesus will be.
12 The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. 13 They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the king of Israel!” 14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written: 15 “Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.” 16 At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him. 17 Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. 18 Many people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign, went out to meet him. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!”

Apparently from all over, common people, from all walks of life, coming for the Passover feast.
Not so many from the temple, the “establishment” had its own ideas
The religious leaders came, but only to scoff and criticize.
Christ was honored more by these simple people, rather than the pharisees
The closer you are to the “temple” the further away you are from Jesus!
When did they celebrate him? V.12

When they heard he was coming to Jerusalem, to the Passover feast.
They heard because people were talking about the miracle that just happened- Lazarus!
A most powerful event was about to happen— Passover.
Not just any Passover lamb, but THE lamb of God will be sacrificed, once for all.

13 They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the king of Israel!”

The palm tree is a symbol of victory and triumph.
Shouting “Hosanna” which means “please save us” or “Salvation comes from our Lord”
Stating the truth of who he is, and wishing well on his kingdom
“Blessed is he who comes, in the name of the Lord”
They welcomed him into Jerusalem, and affirmed him as their king, the promised Messiah.

14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written: 15 “Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.”
He fulfilled prophecy and rode on a young donkey, polarizing the people!
26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. From the house of the Lord we bless you.
9 Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
Not like leaders and kings of the world would ride in, because his kingdom is not of this world! Photos (Joshua conquering Canaan), (Young donkey)
Some believed the Messiah would come riding in on a powerful horse like Joshua did coming into the promised land!
17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.
That is a powerful “litmus” test for our belief:
Do we have an expectation for Jesus? Do we have some preconceived notion about what he should be, do, or how he will accomplish His plans?
He is a mild and approachable king. Tender, caring and accessible.

16 At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him.
They participated, but did not understand.
It wasn’t until Jesus was raised from the dead did it all click together.
God is patient and kind. Understanding comes through a process.

19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!”
They were learning a vital truth:
Resistance to King Jesus is absolutely futile
The “whole world” will indeed bow and worship him, one way or another!

We too are common people from all walks of life.
Gathering to welcome and celebrate King Jesus into our hearts and together we proclaim his truth and his glory!
He is a patient, kind, loving father, accessible to hear us, forgive and empower us.
There are enemies to his Kingdom today-- and they know the truth. That they are really gaining nothing, getting no where-- and they are observing that the whole world is going to be following after him!

9 After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. 10 And they cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.”
11 And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”
Let’s take the next few moments and soak in the truth of all this. “He is Lord, He is Lord…”
All past, present, and future worship belongs to Jesus. No one, no matter how hard they try, will escape this truth. We join with all of heaven and creation, worshipping God with joy!
Revelation 22:20-21
20 He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. 21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s people. Amen.
