THOUGHTS TO CONSIDER

What is a Blessed Life? What is it to be truly and deeply happy?

The World:

Blessed are those who have power, position, possessions, and personality.
Heroes are portrayed as having supernatural physical strength and might.
I grew up with Spiderman, Superman, the Hulk, Wonder Woman, Flash Gordon.

We honour the strong, the powerful and wealthy.

But Jesus declares:

Blessed are the poor in spirit; those who mourn...
Blessed are those who desire above everything to walk in Christ-likeness, The merciful, those reflecting the life and purity of Christ.
Blessed are the peacemakers, the persecuted.
But today we consider “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”

Why are we to pursue a truly Blessed Life?

The beatitudes are a portrait of who we are in Christ, and a reflection of Christ.

This blessed life is to shine before the world bringing glory to God the Father!

THOUGHTS TO GRASP

WHAT IS MEEKNESS?

The Strong Gentleness of God

Isaiah 30:18 - Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; he rises to show you compassion.
Isaiah 40:11 - He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.
Isaiah 54:8 - In a surge of anger I hid my face from you for a moment, but with everlasting kindness I will have compassion on you.
Elijah at Horeb - God was not in the fire or earthquake, but in a gentle whisper.

Meekness In Context - Psalm 37

The Meek don’t fret and get distracted.

They trust and wait patiently for the Lord.
They don’t worry even when the wicked prosper.
Psalm 73: “Why do the wicked prosper; while good people die?”

A Portrait of Meekness

Moses: Was very meek. He turned his back on worldly honours and earthly riches.
Naaman: Comes off his high horse and is healed from leprosy.
Meekness: Patient, surrendered, humble, lowly, unselfish, quietly bearing affliction, not looking for revenge, or seeking to defend ourselves.
Apostle Paul: “By the meekness and gentleness of Christ, I appeal to you.”

The Meekness and Gentleness of Christ

Matt.11:29 - Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart.
Matt.12:18-21 - Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him and he will bring justice to the nations. He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the streets.
Matt.21:5 - See, your king comes to you... gentle and riding on a donkey.
In the Gospels we read about his his miracles, his power & authority, his prayer life.
In Matthew we see into the heart of Christ - “I am meek and lowly” - Gentle and Lowly!
At deepest level, Jesus declares he is “Gentle”, “meek and lowly”
Therefore, He can’t help but be compassionate.
In the gospels much of his works were done because he was filled with compassion.

WHY ARE WE TO BE MEEK?

We will inherit the land of promise

We are not to invade, overpower or overrun the land - we are to INHERIT!
All that we have is a GIFT! Therefore why boast about anything we have?
Corinth had divided up the Church, following and boasting about different leaders. Why? “all is yours!” 1 Cor.3:21-23
Illustration: Dividing the back seats of “DAD’S CAR!”
The earth belongs to the Lord and we are in his will - fellow heirs with Christ!
2 Peter 3:13-14 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness. So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.

We shall one day reign with Christ

This thought should keep us meek, humble, lowly and gentle in heart - so SHINE!
