“Do You Want to Leave Too”

John 6:60-70

60 On hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”

61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you? 62 What if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! 63 The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life. 64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. 65 He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled him.”

66 From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.

67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.

68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.”

70 Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!” 71 (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)

Introduction – Up against something hard (start story about struggles on farm after becoming a Christian)

Vs 60 – They felt the exact same way... overwhelmed

  • Hard Teaching
    • Hard... Difficult – Gk (Hardening of the Heart)
    • Teaching...Instruction – Gk (logos... Word) Tanner last wk... Jn 1:1 In the be
    • Hardening of heart against Jesus
  • Who can accept it?
    • Accept – not in the Greek.
    • Greek word is akouō (Hear)

Ro 10:17-Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is through the word of Christ

    • Faith comes from hearing and acting

Vs 61Does this cause you to not believe?

  • Offend – in the Greek is skandalizō
    • Or cause to sin Mt 13:21 But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away

Mt 18:7 “Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to sin! Such things must come, but woe to the man through whom they come!

  • Don’t let your heart get hard that you become a thorn to my kingdom

Vs 62-63 – What I am saying is not literal, but spiritual

  • The Spirit gives life (God)
  • The flesh is nothingPhp 3:3 who glory in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh
    • True followers - Follow Jesus, not Dutch tradition

We see this in Vs 64-65

  • Jesus could tell who’s heart was in it
    • In what... the Spirit and not tradition
    • Reformed does not mean Dutch or Sioux Center, no it means change for the better
      • First to Change Church
  • Vs 66 – Many followers turned pseudo-believers
    • This is too hard, but I’ll be watching & complaining
    • Baptism and carrying the baby
    • Eventually there is going to come a time

Vs 67 – The Question for this week

  • “You do not want to leave too... do you?”
  • Do you want to have life to the full Jn 10:10
    • Stay on this ride of your life
  • Peter answers “Amen”, where else would we go
    • You are Life, you are God!
