Intro: Welcome my Friends
BIBLE TEXT: Matthew 5:21-26 ““You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’
But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of hell fire.
Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you,
leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are on the way with him, lest your adversary deliver you to the judge, the judge hand you over to the officer, and you be thrown into prison.
Assuredly, I say to you, you will by no means get out of there till you have paid the last penny.”
Sermon Title: Murder Many Ways
Joke: A couple of years ago, I was driving and getting ready to turn onto my street when someone hit me from behind. I stopped, got out of the car, went around the back, and examined the damage. The rear of my car was dented in. It was the other driver’s fault, but it was my inconvenience.
I took out my license and said, “Let’s exchange insurance information.”
The other driver said, “I don’t have any.”
We had a problem. The problem is that I had a dent in my car that was caused by somebody else. Somebody would have to pay this bill because the fact remained that my car had a dent in it. However, if I waited around for him to fix it, I’d be driving for years with a dent in the back of my car. So guess what I did. I picked up the tab. The moment I picked up the tab, I didn’t have to drive around with a dent anymore. I made the payment.
Many of us are living our lives with dents on the soul. Somebody has run into us, somebody has messed over us, or somebody has insulted us, and we’ve been driving our lives for years, waiting for their insurance package to pick it up. But they are uninsured, and they are never going to pick up the tab. Because you refused to pick it up yourself, you are forever dented in your soul.1013
Title Points: Reconcile Before Its To Late
Outline 1
Bible Text : Matthew 5:21 ““You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’”
One Teaching Idea: (1 Sentence or Less)
Jesus was quoting from the Ten Commandments, called the law of Moses. The Pharisees were teaching that the command against murder, found in Exodus 20:13, referred just to taking another person’s life. Murderers were subject to judgment (i.e., execution; see Exodus 21:12
Cross Reference: Deuteronomy 5:17 “‘You shall not murder.”
1st Point: Murder Is A Crime
One Application: The Murder punishment in those days where often to losing your own life. It would make you think twice about the crime
Personal Story: I remember growing up one of my good friends in High School went to prison for 22 years for murder.
Outline 2
Bible Text : Matthew 5:22 “But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of hell fire.”
One Teaching Idea: (1 Sentence or Less)
Jesus taught that his followers should not even become angry enough to murder, for then they would already have committed murder in their heart. “Anger,” here, refers to brooding bitterness that always threatens to leap out of control, leading to violence, emotional hurt, increased mental stress, spiritual damage, and, yes, even murder.
Cross Reference: James 3:6 “And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.”
2nd Point: Murder is Accomplished in The Heart
One Application:
The heart is wicked and the Tongue lashes out what the heart feels.
The wickedness of the tongue can destroy a person. It can take seconds to destroy something that took years to build.
To stoop to insulting or calling a fellow believer a derogatory name makes one liable to prosecution. Angry words and name-calling reveal a heart far from God. “And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of hell.”
Personal Story:
I remember growing hearing family members using a lot of curse words to share their emotions
Outline 3
Bible Text : Matthew 5:23-24 “Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.”
One Teaching Idea: (1 Sentence or Less)
The Jews brought their gifts as a matter of course, as part of keeping God’s law. But Jesus explained that those who come into God’s presence to worship must come with pure hearts, not hindered by broken relationships that they had the power to mend.
Cross Reference: Matthew 6:15 “But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”
3rd Point: Love The unloveable
One Application:
Jesus explained that if the worshiper remembered someone’s anger against him or her, that person should leave the gift and go immediately to be reconciled to the offended brother or sister. Then he should come back to worship and offer his or her gift.
Personal Story:
I remember growing up with so much anger with my mom
ONE day my brother did something he shouldn’t have and I seized the opportunity to get him in trouble. “Ooooooh, I’m going to t-e-l-l!” When my father came home, I was the first one at the door. “Guess what he did?” and I proceeded to relate all the details. My father disciplined my brother, and I enjoyed knowing that my brother was suffering.Soon after my father dealt with my brother, he called me to come to him. He proceeded to discipline me! I quickly questioned him and pleaded with him, “But I didn’t do anything!”My father disagreed, “Oh yes, you did. What you told me could have been corrected, before I showed up. But because you wanted to hurt your brother and wanted to see him in pain … because you didn’t help him and want to see him delivered from pain, I am going to make sure that you know what it feels like to hurt too.” I never forgot that lesson. It has since reminded me of the importance of being a restorer.

Bible Text : Matthew 5:25-26 “Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are on the way with him, lest your adversary deliver you to the judge, the judge hand you over to the officer, and you be thrown into prison. Assuredly, I say to you, you will by no means get out of there till you have paid the last penny.”
One Teaching Idea: (1 Sentence or Less)
Cross Reference: Luke: 12:58 “When you go with your adversary to the magistrate, make every effort along the way to settle with him, lest he drag you to the judge, the judge deliver you to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.”
4th Point: Settle Now or Pay Later
One Application:
It is practical advice to resolve our differences with our enemies before their anger causes more trouble. In a broader sense, these verses advise us to get things right with our brothers and sisters before we have to stand before God.
Personal Story:
My cousins growing up robbed the Pionnin restaraunt and had a chance to give up the money and they didnt so they spent 10 years in prison
