DISCIPLESHIP:
DISCIPLE. A disciple (from Lat. discipulus, ‘pupil, learner’, corresponding to Gk. mathētēs, from manthanō, ‘to learn’) is basically the pupil of a teacher. The corresponding Heb. term limmûḏ is somewhat rare in the OT (Is. 8:16; 50:4; 54:13; cf. Je. 13:23), but in the rabbinical writings the talmîḏ (cf. 1 Ch. 25:8) is a familiar figure as the pupil of a rabbi from whom he learned traditional lore. In the Gk. world philosophers were likewise surrounded by their pupils. Since pupils often adopted the distinctive teaching of their masters, the word came to signify the adherent of a particular outlook in religion or philosophy.1

Disciples are made not born

12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, 13 for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. 14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. 1 Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, 2 and of instruction about washings, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.

Opening Question: What does baptism mean to you, and is it necessary for salvation?
Teaching of Baptisms
Defining Baptism:
Baptism. Term generally meaning “to dip” or “immerse,” but representing a group of words employed to signify a religious rite for ritual cleansing. In Judaism there were ritual ablutions, Qumran lustrations, and proselyte baptism. In the NT it became the rite of initiation into the Christian community. The concept not only referred to the cultic rite but also was interpreted theologically as a dying and rising with Christ 1

There are a few different baptisms:
Baptism by water: Matthew 3:15-17
15 But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. 16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; 17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

Baptism into the body of Christ: (2 Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 6:15)
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
15 For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation.
Baptism by Fire: Tests and trials: (Mark 10:38; 1 Peter 1:7; 4:12)
38 Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?”
7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
12 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.
Baptism in the Leader: (Hebrews 13:7; 17)
7 Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith.
17 Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.
Teaching of Laying on of Hands
Laying on of Hands in the OT:
The sinner would have to lay their hands on the animal head. Leviticus 8:14
14 Then he brought the bull of the sin offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the bull of the sin offering.
You transfer your sin act, not your sin nature, so you can sin again Leviticus 1:4
4 He shall lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him.
Used to impart wisdom and honor. (Numbers 27:18-20; Deuteronomy 34:9)
18 So the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him. 19 Make him stand before Eleazar the priest and all the congregation, and you shall commission him in their sight. 20 You shall invest him with some of your authority, that all the congregation of the people of Israel may obey.
9 And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him. So the people of Israel obeyed him and did as the Lord had commanded Moses.
This was a type and shadow of what Christ has done for us. Jesus was touched and handled, passed from court to court. They handled Him in effect transferring the sin of man on to Him, identification. The doctrine of the laying on of hands helps us understand that there was an impartation of sin into the Lamb of God and thus a need for Him to be sacrificed for sin.
The Practice of Laying on of Hands
Healing – Believers should not be mesmerized by seeing people healed. That should not be a rarity in the believer’s life. (John 9:6-7)
6 Having said these things, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he anointed the man’s eyes with the mud 7 and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing.
Ministry - Whenever you are sent to do ministry, you should be sent out through the laying on of hands. (Acts 13:2-4)
2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3 Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off. 4 So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus.
Teaching of the Resurrection of the Dead
Types of Death:
Spiritual - Genesis 2:17 Separation from the presence, wisdom, knowledge, and sensitivity of God. Spiritual death means to be disconnected from God, when you are spiritually dead you done have any conviction about spiritual things.
17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
Physical death - Hebrews 9:27. Each of us has an appointment with death, there is nothing you can do to change it. It does not depend on your age, health, or the decision of how you live your life.
27 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,
Death to the Flesh - Mark 8:34 Deny yourself to turn from self-centered ness, self-idolatry. Jesus doesn't first come to give you life, He comes to kill you. Rom 12:1 - Living sacrifice, Galatians 2:20
20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
34 And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
Types of Resurrection:
Historical - Christ resurrection as a recorded fact, 500 witnesses (1 Corinthians 15:6). Teaching his for forty days after His resurrection (Acts 1:1-3)
1 In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, 2 until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. 3 He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.
6 Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep.
Literal - He raised others from the dead (John 11:25-26; 43-44)
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
43 When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.” 44 The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”
Spiritual - (1 Peter 1:23)
23 since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God;
Eternal Judgement
Eternal judgment refers to the judgment of believers, the world, and humanity.
Judgement on the Cross:
· Satan was judged
· The world system power was judged
· Sins of believers were judged
· Adamic sin nature was judged
1. Satan was judged
Having disarmed the rulers authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in it (that is the cross). – Colossians 2:15
Satan no longer has a position of authority; he has power, but not authority. For example, prisoner in jail has the ability or power to punch you if given the opportunity. However he cannot set himself free. As long as we are in Christ, we have authority over Satan, but if you let him run you he will.
2. The world system power was judged
Satan is the god of this world. He is not the authority, but the one whose philosophical views dominate the world in which we live. He has convinced people to think anti-God, have a rebellious spirit, be proud, and try to be independent of God. However, through Christ we have been given the option to reject his philosophical views. But prior to Christ judging him on the cross, and before we accepted Christ, we all adopted some or all of Satan’s philosophical views.
“In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.” – 2 Corinthians 4:4

Christ destroyed the power of the world over the believer. This act gave the believer the ability to be the exception, not the norm. Believers are able to be unique.
“Now is the judgement of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.” – John 12:31

Satan has been cast out; has no longer has power over you. That is why 1 John 4:4 says. “…greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world.” If we come into the reality that Satan has no power over us, we will walk in victory. Jesus has all power and His spirit dwells in us.
“For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world – our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” – 1 John 5:4-5

Our faith in Christ helps us overcome the world, it philosophies, views, schemes, and methods because we will not subjugate ourselves to any other view that excludes Christ.
3. Sins of believers were judged
“Surely he has borne out griefs and carried out sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned – everyone – to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. – Isaiah 53:4-6

Jesus put our sin upon Himself, and paid the price He became sin for us. He suffered the penalty and judgement for our sin so we would not have to. He has taken our condemnation if we believe. (John 3:18). There is no condemnation for those who walk after the spirit. (Romans 8:1, 2). Also know that God does not condemn you even if you condemn yourself (1 John 3:20) God is greater than our emotions, or how we might feel.
20 for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything.
1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.
18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
4. Adamic sin nature was judged
Our old life was judged when Jesus was crucified; the new life will no longer be a slave to sin. Sin does not have dominion.
…knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. – Romans 6:6
6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.
We now have a new life that will not serve sin. Not that you don’t have the potential to sin, but your life is not dominated by it. Sin no longer dominates you; you can now choose.
If you have been raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. – Colossians 3:1

As believers, we no longer serve sin. If sin still controlling us, then what did Jesus do? We served sin before we were saved. Now, we conveniently sin. We are not slaves to sin, because sin has no authority over us. Sin is in our flesh. If sin dominates our life, we simply are not walking in the blessings and freedom of God.
For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace. – Romans 6:14
14 For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.
Closing: A believer has the ability to walk away from God, but no man can take you from Him. If you hang in there with God, He will hang in there with you. But that does not give you a license to sin, but an opportunity for sanctification.
It is time to move to another dimension of faith in God called perfection. First, let us establish what the Bible means by the word “perfect” it does not have the same meaning we have come to define it as in our modern linguist style. The Greek word for “perfection” is teleios, which means “ended or complete”, and is often translated as “mature or wholeness”. Now we can better understand our passage in the proper biblical context. When the author of Hebrews reprimands the believers by calling them babes, as opposed to adults, because they have not fulfilled the expectation of (mature) Christians – the expectation to teach. (Hebrews 5:12)
