This Week’s Theme: A Saint’s Sins Can Affect All
Memory Verse: Isaiah 59:2 “2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear.”
This Week’s Word is Sin: Sin is a failure to complete or missing a standard created by God.
Essence of the Text in a Sentence: After the army of Israel suffered a defeat on the battlefield, Joshua and the people realize that sin is the cause.
Sermon Objective: I want those in attendance to identify, acknowledge, confess, and repent of the sin(s) that hinder the effectiveness of the church
Sermon Text: Joshua 7:10-26
Joshua 7:21 NKJV
21 When I saw among the spoils a beautiful Babylonian garment, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. And there they are, hidden in the earth in the midst of my tent, with the silver under it.”
Big Idea:
Your sin can hinder the effectiveness of the church
INTRODUCTION:
TRANSITION:

I. Your Sin Causes Casualties

Joshua 7:5 NKJV
5 And the men of Ai struck down about thirty-six men, for they chased them from before the gate as far as Shebarim, and struck them down on the descent; therefore the hearts of the people melted and became like water.
Numbers 14:45 NKJV
45 Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who dwelt in that mountain came down and attacked them, and drove them back as far as Hormah.
Proverbs 21:16 NKJV
16 A man who wanders from the way of understanding Will rest in the assembly of the dead.
James 1:15 NKJV
15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.
Acts 20:29–30 NKJV
29 For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. 30 Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves.
1 Corinthians 11:29–30 NKJV
29 For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. 30 For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep.
What is in your tent?

II. Sin Causes Confusion

Joshua 7:7 NKJV
7 And Joshua said, “Alas, Lord God, why have You brought this people over the Jordan at all—to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? Oh, that we had been content, and dwelt on the other side of the Jordan!
Deuteronomy 9:3 NKJV
3 Therefore understand today that the Lord your God is He who goes over before you as a consuming fire. He will destroy them and bring them down before you; so you shall drive them out and destroy them quickly, as the Lord has said to you.
Deuteronomy 31:3–5 NKJV
3 The Lord your God Himself crosses over before you; He will destroy these nations from before you, and you shall dispossess them. Joshua himself crosses over before you, just as the Lord has said. 4 And the Lord will do to them as He did to Sihon and Og, the kings of the Amorites and their land, when He destroyed them. 5 The Lord will give them over to you, that you may do to them according to every commandment which I have commanded you.
What is in your tent?
Do you ask the question, “Why me?”
Are living like you are more than a conqueror?
Do you have peace that surpasses men’s understanding?
What in your life is not lining up with what God’s word say?

III. Sin Causes Conflict

Joshua 7:1 NKJV
1 But the children of Israel committed a trespass regarding the accursed things, for Achan the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed things; so the anger of the Lord burned against the children of Israel.
Leviticus 26:14–16 NKJV
14 ‘But if you do not obey Me, and do not observe all these commandments, 15 and if you despise My statutes, or if your soul abhors My judgments, so that you do not perform all My commandments, but break My covenant, 16 I also will do this to you: I will even appoint terror over you, wasting disease and fever which shall consume the eyes and cause sorrow of heart. And you shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it.
What is in your tent?

What is the problem?

Effectiveness is Hindered

Joshua 7:12–13 NKJV
12 Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they have become doomed to destruction. Neither will I be with you anymore, unless you destroy the accursed from among you. 13 Get up, sanctify the people, and say, ‘Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, because thus says the Lord God of Israel: “There is an accursed thing in your midst, O Israel; you cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the accursed thing from among you.”

God’s presence is not with us

Joshua 7:12 NKJV
12 Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they have become doomed to destruction. Neither will I be with you anymore, unless you destroy the accursed from among you.
Does God feel far away from you?

What needs to happen?

Give Glory to God

Joshua 7:19 NKJV
19 Now Joshua said to Achan, “My son, I beg you, give glory to the Lord God of Israel, and make confession to Him, and tell me now what you have done; do not hide it from me.”

Confess your Uncleanness

Isaiah 64:6 NKJV
6 But we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; We all fade as a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, Have taken us away.

Confess you Guilt

Psalm 38:3–4 NKJV
3 There is no soundness in my flesh Because of Your anger, Nor any health in my bones Because of my sin. 4 For my iniquities have gone over my head; Like a heavy burden they are too heavy for me.

Confess your Separation

Isaiah 59:2 NKJV
2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear.
Has your sin hindered the effectiveness of the church?
Will you right now confess your sins to the LORD?
Will you repent (turn from) of your sins today?
Actions speak louder than words, name the Christians you will tell your sins to and those who you will look to for accountability
