Opening & Intro

The Giving Tree
Once there was a tree.... and she loved a little boy. And everyday the boy would come and he would gather her leaves and make them into crowns and play king of the forest. He would climb up her trunk and swing from her branches and eat apples. And they would play hide-and-go-seek. And when he was tired, he would sleep in her shade. And the boy loved the tree.... very much. And the tree was happy. But time went by. And the boy grew older. And the tree was often alone. Then one day the boy came to the tree and the tree said, "Come, Boy, come and climb up my trunk and swing from my branches and eat apples and play in my shade and be happy." "I am too big to climb and play" said the boy. "I want to buy things and have fun. I want some money?" "I'm sorry," said the tree, "but I have no money. I have only leaves and apples. Take my apples, Boy, and sell them in the city. Then you will have money and you will be happy." And so the boy climbed up the tree and gathered her apples and carried them away. And the tree was happy. But the boy stayed away for a long time.... and the tree was sad. And then one day the boy came back and the tree shook with joy and she said, "Come, Boy, climb up my trunk and swing from my branches and be happy." "I am too busy to climb trees," said the boy. "I want a house to keep me warm," he said. "I want a wife and I want children, and so I need a house. Can you give me a house ?" " I have no house," said the tree. "The forest is my house, but you may cut off my branches and build a house. Then you will be happy." And so the boy cut off her branches and carried them away to build his house. And the tree was happy. But the boy stayed away for a long time. And when he came back, the tree was so happy she could hardly speak. "Come, Boy," she whispered, "come and play." "I am too old and sad to play," said the boy. "I want a boat that will take me far away from here. Can you give me a boat?" "Cut down my trunk and make a boat," said the tree. "Then you can sail away... and be happy." And so the boy cut down her trunk and made a boat and sailed away. And the tree was happy ... but not really. And after a long time the boy came back again. "I am sorry, Boy," said the tree," but I have nothing left to give you - My apples are gone." "My teeth are too weak for apples," said the boy. "My branches are gone," said the tree. " You cannot swing on them - " "I am too old to swing on branches," said the boy. "My trunk is gone, " said the tree. "You cannot climb - " "I am too tired to climb" said the boy. "I am sorry," sighed the tree. "I wish that I could give you something.... but I have nothing left. I am just an old stump. I am sorry...." "I don't need very much now," said the boy. "just a quiet place to sit and rest. I am very tired." "Well," said the tree, straightening herself up as much as she could, "well, an old stump is good for sitting and resting Come, Boy, sit down. Sit down and rest." And the boy did. And the tree was happy.
This is a story of unconditional love,
Let’s change the ending alittle.
What if instead of the Boy understanding he got angry that the tree wouldn’t give him more. What if the little boy told the stump of the tree that it didn’t love him enough and that’s why it wouldn’t give him more...
Even though the reality is, the tree had already given everythign it had to give.
That is one of the major themes of this final part of the book of Micah.
What more does God have to do before the world has enough from Him?

Main Point

We must wait with bold brokenness for the return of Jesus.

Why Does it Matter

This world is broken. Pain and death are real problems. It is only for a time because Jesus is coming back and we will be set free from the things that torment us in this life.

Scripture

Chapter 6
1 - Get up and tell the Mountains
2 - God is bringing a case and Judah is in trouble!
Let creation be your judge.
God is bringing charges against His people.
A reminder!
3-5 - I have done so much for you
6-7 - What has God asked for in return?
8 To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your Him.
The story of a social studies teacher who gives an assignment to his junior high school class to think of an idea to change the world for the better, then put it into action. When one young student creates a plan for "paying forward" favors, he not only affects the life of his struggling single mother, but he sets in motion an unprecedented wave of human kindness which, unbeknownst to him, has blossomed into a profound national phenomenon.
Pay It Forward dares to point us in a different direction. It boldly reveals that kindness and putting others first are acts of moral beauty. It concretely proclaims that each person can make a difference in the world by doing good. And it reveals that although we'll probably never know the effects of our acts of compassion, that's okay. All of the world's religions point out that the reward is in the act itself.
Imagine how simple that concept is. SOmeone drastically changed your life and the only thing asked in return is that you do the same as you go along.
That is what this trial is about.
9 - Hear the Lord Judah
10-12 - You all have intentionally provoked Him and turned your backs on Him.
13-15 - Now, you are reaping what you have sown!
The verdict:
16 - Let your false gods and idols spare you from the others.
Chapter 7 - Micah’s Song - The reality of where we live now and it is awful but ALSO where we will end up...
A Lament!
1-6 - God wants to love his people but they have all abandoned Him.
Lament to hope
7 - The faithful few must wait for God's plan to surface.
Hope to victory...
8-9 - I may be lost and hurting but it isn't forever. God will rescue me.
10 - Those that hurt me will feel the same sting they had mocked me for.
11-13 - God will call everyone to Himself so be sure!
14-20 - God is coming and will be glorious! We wait in BOLD BROKENNESS!

Application

Understand - God owes us nothing! He has already given us EVERYTHING!
Repent - Cast down our idols and the things that are standing in His way.
Respond - Act justly and love mercy and walk humbly with your God.
A proper relationship with God requires a proper relationship with your neighbour.
Much like the giving tree, do we take and take and take? Do we take the time to step back and give and serve?
That is what act justly and love mercy and walk humbly with your God looks like.
He wants us all to live - Micah is echoing God heart in 7:1
Micah 7:1 NIV
What misery is mine! I am like one who gathers summer fruit at the gleaning of the vineyard; there is no cluster of grapes to eat, none of the early figs that I crave.

Closing

Remember, God doesn’t send us to Hell. He watches us go there on our own and it breaks His heart.
