Last week we looked at the very serious sin of unbelief as the author of Hebrews told us to hold fast to our confession of faith. They reminded us that we can indeed enter into the throne room of grace with boldness, knowing that the one enthroned there loves us and will grant mercy and grace when we need it. Has anyone here needed mercy and grace this week?
We are studying the book of Hebrews together. One of the things that I find most interesting about preaching through books like this is how timely they end up being. Because the word of God is alive and active and sharp.
This morning we find ourselves in Hebrews chapter 5 - continuing our study of the book. As we study these books together, it is important to remember that we will not cover every topic, every word contained within this book. We will spend some time here, studying the word together, in an attempt to understand what God would have for us here.
Let’s pray.
The Author of Hebrews has spent most of this book so far establishing that Jesus is better than any of type of set up we think we have. He’s better than the Angels. He is better than Moses. His covenant is better that the Mosaic one. Here in chapter 5 we find some more of that. The Israelite people - the Hebrew people were following after a High Priest, who would offer atonement. This man was chosen and called by God to represent man to God. There were good things about the high priest, but Jesus improved upon all of them.
I would like to turn our focus this morning to that later portion of the chapter, starting in vs 11.
We have a great deal to say about this, and it is difficult to explain, since you have become too lazy to understand.
Although by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the basic principles of God’s revelation again. You need milk, not solid food.
Now everyone who lives on milk is inexperienced with the message about righteousness, because he is an infant.
But solid food is for the mature—for those whose senses have been trained to distinguish between good and evil.
Therefore, let us leave the elementary teaching about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works, faith in God,
teaching about ritual washings, laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.
And we will do this if God permits.
The author of hebrews was digging into some pretty serious stuff, some thick - theological stuff. It is one thing to say that Jesus has more power and honor than Angel, who is Melchizedek? Why does Jesus come from His “order?” The author is drawing these conclusions and sharing with his reader all of these things that make Jesus more and more wonderful and magnificent and he comes to a full stop to say…
“It is difficult to explain, since you have become too lazy to understand”

About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.
Dull of hearing and too lazy to understand.
Eventual Maturity is expected.
Baby Christians - exist, and that is okay. Thats not the problem.

Like newborn infants, desire the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow up into your salvation,
b. Writer has been drawing out this problem of the church.. that eventually, instead of maturing and growing, we skim off the very top of what it would mean to be a follower of Christ and consider ourselves full.
I’ve got my favorite verses, and that
We stop growing when we check out.
we stay on the same things over and over and over.
Unwilling, unable to grow.
Get the full value of milk, then buy some steak.
Some milk is better than others. Feel good messages, worldly focused messages..
we have an obligation to know and and understand scripture - we act like our ignorance is a matter of God withholding revelation from us
Give others Milk.
By this time you should be teachers. The church needs this. If you can break out of the rut - teach others. Some people need reteaching

Therefore take care how you listen. For whoever has, more will be given to him; and whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.”
