Behold The True Beauty Of True Love

1 John 3:1–10 NASB95
See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure. Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness. You know that He appeared in order to take away sins; and in Him there is no sin. No one who abides in Him sins; no one who sins has seen Him or knows Him. Little children, make sure no one deceives you; the one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous; the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil. No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. By this the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious: anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother.

1. Behold His great love that adopts and transforms us into His family. (1-3)

1 John 3:1–3 NASB95
See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.
Main Point: We have to change our view of our self, OUR IDENTITY. We have to behold, dwell upon or think about, our adoption into God’s family through Jesus.
Main Point:We have to identify with who we are and who we will be when Jesus returns. He is transforming us to His image on a daily basis.
Illustration: Picture me and Pelham – It takes time to see who our kids will really look like. But eventually there will be a transformation that resembles who they belong to. GENETICS/DNA *Children will look like their parents.
Ephesians 1:4b–6 NASB95
He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.
Galatians 4:4–7 NASB95
But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.
1 Corinthians 2:9 NASB95
but just as it is written, Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, And which have not entered the heart of man, All that God has prepared for those who love Him.”
1 Corinthians 13:12 NASB95
For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known.
“The grace that does not change my life will not save my soul.” – Charles Spurgeon

2. Behold His great sacrifice that frees us from the power and penalty of sin. (4-9)

1 John 3:4–9 NASB95
Main Point: Your identity frees you from your captivity.
Illustration: The more time a child spends with their parent the more that child will become like his/her parent. AKA ABIDING Does Pelham mess up? Yes but he confesses and apologizes. He is still my child even on his worst day.
Illustration: Abiding example of my relationship with Leann/husband and wife
Abide: permanent, to continue, sojourn, dwell, constant….TO BE IN CLOSE AND SETTLED UNION…compared to communion
· Even when you are at your worst you are still of righteous birth.
· Power of sin daily as a result we have to daily abide in Jesus
· Penalty of sin death – Being covered by His grace means that our debt (death) has been erased.
Romans 6:17–18 NASB95
But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.
John 8:34–36 NASB95
Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. “The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever. “So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.
“If you are a lover of sin, you shall go where sinners go.” – Charles Spurgeon

3. Behold His great work that distinguishes us in the midst of this world. (10)

Main Point: Our identity in Christ is going to be obvious by the practices (actions) that we make and the love we have for other believers.
· Your identity drives your activity - Who you are determines what you do (Illustration: Police vs costume)
· Children of God
o Righteousness and love
· Children of the devil
o Rebel and lawlessness
John 15:16 NASB95
“You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you.
John 15:5–8 NASB95
“I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. “If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned. “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. “My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples.
Matthew 7:16 NASB95
“You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they?
