What do I want them to know? Jesus is the Messian King who’s come to save the world
Why? It is this King that brings hope
What do I want them to do? Worship and follow the King, put their faith, believing loyalty into the king
Why? This is the King that brings hope and establishes a new kingdom
ME/WE
Have you ever had a time in your life when what you SAW and/or what you heard did not match up with reality?
You saw something or heard something, and what you heard was GREAT NEWS, wonderful news, but in fact did not line up with reality
For some of us it is with a product we bought, a beauty product, health product, a new technology, or this the best restaurant to go for TACOS
and you bought it but it did not live up to expectations,
The make up product you bought must have been developed in a lab with MEN because no woman would were this.
Or you want to a restaurant that proclaimed to have GREAT TACOS, someone said this is the best place for TACOS, and you eat the TACOS and they are the worst TACOS, so bad you stop eating the TACOS
What you were told did not match up to reality
We have also been on the other side of things where what we SEE and HEAR exceeds our expectations, it blew us away.
We had this with the house we are living in.
In fact, we overlooked this house because we saw it online and they only posted a picture of the outside of the house and the price point was much much lower for the average going rate for a house that was just like it.
It wasn’t until our relator came and said come and see it is not what it appears to be, it is much, much better.
TENSION
It is this type of tension of seeing and hearing and what is reality, what is the TRUTH, WHAT IS THE TRUTH is on VOLUMNE not 10, not 11, but 12 all the way up we are seeing 2000 years ago on Jesus Triumphal entry where Jesus comes marching in proclaiming He is King , what we know as Palm Sunday, Jesus is marching into the city during celebration of Passover, where everyone comes to celebrate God’s deliverance from the nation of Israel.
Why? Why is the city a buzz, stirred?
THE PLACE IS ABUZZ BECAUSE OF THIS JESUS PERSON…this is not normal Passover, Jesus is here....this man who ha many people have HEARD not all have seen (no internet then) (the stories have went out about Jesus, this man who heals the blind, causes the deaf to hear, raises the dead, proclaiming He is the message) and some have seen it....and heard and seen religious leaders call Jesus a heretic, a lunatic.
We have three primary reactions to what they have SEEN and and HEARD
It breaks into three groups
1. One group mostly made up religious leaders have seen and heard Jesus and said this has to end “He is no king and no Messiah” that days before decided to kill Jesus
2. Another group is saying King Jesus is here! The messianc King, the one who has been doing miracles, just raised Lazaurs from the dead, preaching about the kingdom of God is here. and what we will find out He is not the king the expected but He is better than what they expected
3. Third group who are the undecided, they have heard the buzz, some have scene the miracles, what they have scene and what they have heard is the truth.
This is where we are at, Passover, 2000 years ago, during Jesus’ truimphal entry
- ONE GROUP SAYS KILL HIM, CROWN HIM, and another group waiting and seeing
The place is STIRRED as scripture says
GOD
Let’s read this marvelous story…that every Gospel writes about. I will mostly be in Matthew, but from time to time I will go to other texts of scripture.
Matthew 21:1–3 ESV
Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.”
Jesus is on the journey from Bethphage to the Mount Olives about to ride into Jerusalem, about a 30 minute walk
He then says to the disciples go into the village and immediately you are going to find a donkey, unite it and bring it to me.
Just go get this donkey? Just go untie a donkey that we are going to see?? yes
-If any asks why TELL them Jesus needs it
Luke 19:33–34 ESV
And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” And they said, “The Lord has need of it.”
ok if the LORD needs it, it is His…how often is that way with us....let’s have a conversation Jesus, what are you going to do with the DONKEY, how long is it going to be gone…but this is not what the owner does, the owner says ok, if Jesus’ needs it He can have it.
Why does Jesus need this donkey? To march into Jerusalem, a King needs a donkey
He’s truly not going to march in as King riding a donkey??? Donkey? That’s a common animal , Jesus needs a war horse
People are going to make fun of you, people are going to riducule you
Can you image someone marching into Washington D.C. riding a donkey saying “I am King”
Maybe some will laugh
But this what was foretold the messiah would do
Matthew 21:4–5 ESV
This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying, “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’ ”
Zechariah 9:9 ESV
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
How disciples respond to this Jesus fulfilling this prophecy? yep I saw it in Zech 9:9 I totally understand??
No
John 12:16 ESV
His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him.
Jesus what we are SEEING doesn’t make sense. But this didn’t make SENSE, what they were dreaming and imagining was Jesus riding in a war horse, defeating Rome and the hard hearted religious leaders....
You are SAYING you are a king but you are riding a DONKEY
Jesus “I don’t know if you know this or not, kings ride horses”
WHAT WE NEED IS REVELATION NOT JUST INFORMATOIN…they were close to JESUS did not see JESUS
Jesus didn’t need a war horse to go to battle to do what He was going to do
What they didn’t realize at the time was Jesus was coming to defeat the GREATEST ENEMY WE ALL HAVE OF SIN, DEATH AND SHAME, AND setting up a new kingdom THAT WILL NEVER BE DESTORIED
1 Corinthians 15:54–57 ESV
When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Daniel 2:44 ESV
And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall the kingdom be left to another people. It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall stand forever,
YOU CAN SEE WHY MORE PROFOUNDLY WHY SOME EITHER WANTED TO CROWN HIM OR KILL HIM
HE IS THE MESSIAH THAT EXCEEDS OUR EXPECTATIONS BECAUSE HE IS NOT OVERTHROWING ROME BUT OUR GREATEST ENEMY OF SIN DEATH AND SHAME
Matthew 21:6–9 ESV
The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”

Cloaks on the road symbolized the crowd’s submission to Jesus as king (cf. 2 Kings 9:13). Branches (palms) symbolized Jewish nationalism and victory (see John 12:13). They were connected with prominent Jewish victories (e.g., 1 Macc. 13:51) and with the Festival of Tabernacles; palm motifs were common on both Jewish coinage and synagogue decoration

YOU ARE KING, YOU ARE KING, YOU ARE OUR KING
We submitting to you Jesus
We are putting our faith in you, FAITH mean we are putting our believing loyalty in you.
This is what it means to be follow of Jesus, it is complete alligence to Jesus
VICTORY has come, victory is here, NOT over ROME, but over DEATH, DEATH is loosing it’s sting!
Matthew 21:9 ESV
And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”
Messianc song
The last song they would sing as they ascended to Jerusalem, you are ascended
Psalm 118:19–29 ESV
Open to me the gates of righteousness, that I may enter through them and give thanks to the Lord. This is the gate of the Lord; the righteous shall enter through it. I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation. The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Save us, we pray, O Lord! O Lord, we pray, give us success! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! We bless you from the house of the Lord. The Lord is God, and he has made his light to shine upon us. Bind the festal sacrifice with cords, up to the horns of the altar! You are my God, and I will give thanks to you; you are my God; I will extol you. Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!
Psalm 118:25 ESV
Save us, we pray, O Lord! O Lord, we pray, give us success!
Save us Lord, Save us Lord!
Jesus is going to save them, save beyond their greatest expectations
OTHER CROWD
It is at this point the Pharisees are fuming mad
ONE CROWD REJOICING, ONE CROWD AS MAD AS HORNETS
Luke 19:37–40 ESV
As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”
REBUKE, REBUKE, they are doing the right thing and if they don’t rejoice the rocks will cry out.
It’s in the midst all this going on rejoicing, Jesus marches in as king, that we SEE how big Jesus heart is for the world.
Luke 19:41–44 ESV
And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”
I am coming to bring peace between God and man....
Because you did not know the time of the visitation.
You missed it
300 prophecies
You have known this was the day
you were told this day
You were to be my biggest supporters
How would they have know the exact days?
There was a prophecy given centuries ago that prophecied the year the messiah would come
Daniel 9:24–27 ESV
“Seventy weeks are decreed about your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to put an end to sin, and to atone for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal both vision and prophet, and to anoint a most holy place. Know therefore and understand that from the going out of the word to restore and build Jerusalem to the coming of an anointed one, a prince, there shall be seven weeks. Then for sixty-two weeks it shall be built again with squares and moat, but in a troubled time. And after the sixty-two weeks, an anointed one shall be cut off and shall have nothing. And the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. Its end shall come with a flood, and to the end there shall be war. Desolations are decreed. And he shall make a strong covenant with many for one week, and for half of the week he shall put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall come one who makes desolate, until the decreed end is poured out on the desolator.”
If you take this prophecy and walk it out, we don’t have time today but it lands in year when all this will take place
They missed the day because of what they seen and heard did not line up with what they wanted.
THEY WANTED A CONQUERING WORLDLY KING
To the point that in the Talmud said
“blasted be the bones of those who calculate the end” referring to Dan 9
Predestined dates for redemption have passed, and the matter now depends only on repentance and good deeds”

Jesus is crying because they should have known....the is posture Jesus has for the lost

Pray that we have a heart like Jesus

And for those who do not know Jesus, we pray that your eyes are open

Then Jesus arrives in the city
Matthew 21:10 ESV
And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?”
the GREATEST QUESTION of ALL TIME
WHO IS THIS MAN NAMED JESUS
Who is THIS PERSON calling HIMSELF KING
Matthew 21:11 ESV
And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”
HE is the One Moses talked about in Deut 18:15-18
Deuteronomy 18:15–18 ESV
“The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers—it is to him you shall listen— just as you desired of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, ‘Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God or see this great fire any more, lest I die.’ And the Lord said to me, ‘They are right in what they have spoken. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. And I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him.
He is the Messiah
THE KING OH KINGS HAS COME, THE ONE WHO WILL DEFEAT SIN AND SET UP A KINGDOM THAT WILL NEVER END
LET US REJOICE, FOLLOW, GIVE OUR ALLIGENCE AND BELIEVE.
DEATH IS DEFEATED,
YOUR KING HAS COME, BOW DOWN and GIVE YOUR ALLIGENCE TO HIM, THROUGH YOUR CLOAKS ON THE GROUND AND PALM BRANCHES IN THE AIR.
