06 Easter 2022 – The Crucifixion
Last week we ended with “Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.” Matthew 27:25.

Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.
Two men, two lives, two different destinies Two different outcomes. One is set free, one is condemned. Neither man got what he deserved. One dying in place of the other.
Barabbas:
· Matthew describes him as a “notable prisoner” – Matthew 27:16
· Mark calls him was a murderer – Mark 15:7.
· John calls him a robber – John 18:40.
· Peter would later remind the people, “ye desired a murderer to be granted unto you;” Acts 3:14
Jesus:
· From birth, called Emanuel – God with us = Matthew 1:23
· Called Son of David in Matthew 21:9
· Prophet of Nazareth of Galilee – Matt 21:11
· Know to heal the blind and the lame as well as to raise the dead.
· Called innocent by Judas in Matthew 27:4
· Called Christ by Pilate in Matthew 27:17-22
· Called a just man by Pilate’s wife in Matthew 27:19
· Called a just person by Pilate in Matt 27:24
· Called King of the Jews by Pilate in Matthew 27:37 (Sign on the cross)
· Called the Son of GOD by a Roman centurion in Matthew 27:54
· Even after His burial, He is called the deceiver – Matthew 27:63
· Later Peter would call Him the Holy and Just One – Acts 3:14.
Jesus:
· At His birth
o the shepherds worshipped HIM
o Wise men from the East worshiped HIM
· During His ministry
o The people flocked to Him
· At HIS trial
o People He came to save turned on Him
o Priest and scribes slapped HIM and mocked Him
o Soldiers beat Him and spit upon Him
o They mocked Him as a King
· On the Cross
o The mocking continued, challenging Him to save Himself – Matt. 27:39-43
o Even a thief He was crucified with mocked Him – Matthew 27:44
o He was abandoned by His followers
§ Only John and a few women remained – John 19:25-26
o Forsaken by His Father – Matt. 27:46
o Buried in a borrowed tomb – Mat 27:60
· Barabbas
o First man to be saved by Jesus! (Theoretically speaking, without regard to salvation)
o But he’s not to be the last.
Spurgeon would write – “When my soul can, in imagination, see the Saviour bearing his cross to Calvary, she joins the godly women and weeps with them; for, indeed, there is true cause for grief—cause lying deeper than those mourning women thought. They bewailed innocence maltreated, goodness persecuted, love bleeding, meekness about to die; but my heart has a deeper and more bitter cause to mourn. My sins were the scourges which lacerated those blessed shoulders, and crowned with thorn those bleeding brows: my sins cried “Crucify him! crucify him!” and laid the cross upon his gracious shoulders. His being led forth to die is sorrow enough for one eternity: but my having been his murderer, is more, infinitely more, grief than one poor fountain of tears can express. (Spurgeon, 4/9 Morning)
Do not think for a moment that you did not have a part in HIS crucifixion – to do so condemns you to hell.
