Introduce yourself
Growing up we were so poor we couldnt even pay attention
What did the carpenter say when he finished building a house? Nailed it
How do you like your steak sir? Like winning an argument with my wife… Rare it is
How do you get a squirrel to fall in love with you? Act like a nut
We are so thankful… he is risen… he is risen indeed… a crazy statement to make… the first garden friday.. gethsemane .... pray and about to be crucified.... dies for sin as an atoning sacrifice…died for sin rose for salvation
pain anziety fear all around easter… for us it is an amazing thing! it creates a new world… spring a new world is dawning on the world and are we going to be a part of it.... so listen to this story… we are reflecting as we read the story and what does it have to do with Jesus and us...
John 19:40–41 ESV
40 So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.
Garden nearby… they bring the body there…
John 19:42 ESV
42 So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.
And now the resurrrection story begins… there is a silence and a pivot...
John 20:1 ESV
1 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.
The first day of the new creation week… a new reality is dawning on the world… shame and guilt have been defeated.... it is being offered to every person.... could it be God is offering everything they have waited their entire life for.....
This is why It shifted to Sunday…because of the resurrection and the perspective of when we get together to worship God....
Stone to protect from grave robbers....
She doesnt go in… she goes to visit… and she is in pain because she has lost the one that she has loved… the thing we miss and mourn the most is their presence… they are not at the breakfast table anymore. There place in the home is now empty… and these people legitimately love jesus and they miss him....
John 20:2 ESV
2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.”
Humble brag, thats me… notice something… even though Jesus has talked for three years about this happening… she doesnt go to the grave and think OH MY GOSH THIS HAPPENED.... no.. she goes let me come up with a rational reason of what has happened… someone stole his body… and this is what some people think… stole it… Christians made it up.... the first disciples that came to the empty tomb, this was their idea… but if they had made it up they wouldn’t have written this part in there… the way to give them an out… but she’s real/… shes hurt and missing him and isn’t seeing the truth of the situation… and here is the thing if this is real you ahve to change your life in light of it… it cant be a nice little thing that just sits there....
John 20:3–5 ESV
3 So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. 4 Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in.
Very interesting… there will be a progression here… sees… stoops down, but doesnt go in.. .and this may be some of us… We look and think did this guy go in… and you may be here kind of poking the bear so to speak… youre looking at it thinking it may be true… you’re stooping and looking in but you dont want to reorganize your life around it… but this story doesnt allow a third option… its either true or it isn’t....
John 20:6–7 ESV
6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself.
He is the only one that gives us this detail.... body cloth one thing.. head cloth seperately.... He is saying it was laying there… he didnt just stand up and unrollll it… its almost like he disappeared… its like a balloon deflated and all the ourside still laying there.... its the opposite of what happened with lazarus… he didn’t need an unwrapping.... Its not that we are going to this disembodied spirit life… is a resurrected body… hes going to give you that....
John 20:8 ESV
8 Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed;
Notice that progression… he sees… and he goes in and then he BELIEVES… and thats the challenge if you are just poking at it a little bit… John started that way but in the progression he realizes he has to do something with it so he believes… its the same in the original language… he puts faith in it… he holds it as the greatest truth in the universe… he believes it and takes it as the truth in his life.... some of you believe in beauty or money to save you… or your marriage or your kids… to give you joy and purpose… and they will never give you all the joy you are hoping for… your beauty will end and here is Jesus the thing that cant fade that can never die again… and John is saying this is what is going to give me purpose in meaning in the face of all my sorrow… and if this is true it ALL changes
John 20:9 ESV
9 for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead.
Believing in Jesus doesn’t mean joining a monastary, it means going back to your life with this interconnection with faith and life resurrection life is all a part of bringing the resurection into the present life. We are the new creation people arriving in the present and saying this is the way to be truly human this is what this garden has accomplished a way to access god…it doesnt just change the things we do but the things we WANT to do the things we find our joy in This is where power and money fit.... and they go back home into the intergration of life… salt and light… piercing into the life of the world because they need Jesus… we are piercing into it… and thats the invitation of Easter… to be those people
John 20:11–13 ESV
11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. 13 They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.”
Sees the empty tomb.. skepticism.... angels show up… first time they dont say do not be afraid.... which may say something about how devestated she is that jesus isnt there… and she sees this angel and shes STILL skeptical eventhough she is staring at angels...
John 20:14 ESV
14 Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus.
Just picture the drama of this as she turns around and there is he is… and some of you have lost this becasue you have heard the story so much.,. but picture this Jesus standing.... beaten… dead… stabbed… the roman empire knew how to kill people… some think they really didnt kill him walked around woozy… here I am… no… and one thing we know in this life is that death is final… Funerals as a pastor… someone you laughed and talked deeply with… its final.... and christianity says its NOT final… there is a reversal… and here is Jesus standing… so much hope in that moment… after hes dead here he stands...
but she did not know that it was Jesus
How… she would or should know it is him.... there is this continuity in his resurrected body but there is something new and different that she couldn’t put her finger on…the new creation is going to be so surprisingly new that we will want to explore… and there will be some familiarity that we can understand.... and we see Jesus here not fully seen… and all of these people that walked with him will give their lives for Jesus… because they really saw him… and when they saw him they realized there was no need to be afraid of death...
John 20:15 ESV
15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.”
She thinks hes the guy trimming the fern… thats what would make sense to her… its logical… Jesus enters into our existence in a way that is so beautiful that in the normal things he is there....he comes in and there is no special act to see him… he comes into our lives and enters into normal life he is there… you dont always see or recognize him but he is there…sometimes we go on with life and we dont appreciate Jesus in the weeds and details…
IF you carried him away....
John 20:16 ESV
16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher).
She recognized his voice… kids at target… you said my name and I got it… how many names do you believe when the enemy calls you things, or names you call yourself… failure… but when Jesus calls you he doesnt call you failure.... he calls you by your name… Mary… that is who you are no matter what else people put on your name… in that moment when he makes it personal thatgs when he realizes....
John 20:17 ESV
17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ ”
John doesnt tell us that she runs and grabs him… but he is like don’t cling to me I have things to do… go to my brothers..
John 20:18 ESV
18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.
In a culture where women aren’t listened to the most pivotal moment in history is shared by a woman… who if this is false it could all be over.... shes the one he sends…
John 20:19 ESV
19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
Is there something you desire and seek after more than peace right now? This is what he leads with… not truth love or the force be with you… peace… calm for your soul between God and you… SHALOM… the ultimate thing that since adam and eve sinned and broke it all apart… peace would come… between you and god and you and people peace between your soul.... and even those looking for Jesus sometimes we dont have the peace because we cant really see him and be in him… there is a fight in the world… and we have to trust that he knows what he is doing because if we do peace is the natural result of that… and the resurrection is the thing that proves all of this...
IT was good for him to die for our sins… but the resurrection is what sets it apart… all throughout history other movements… claim to be the messiah it would die with the leader… never before would this happen… and because this really happened in reality there was peace in the world…
John 20:20–21 ESV
20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.”
Not just take this in and have peace… not just st in this truth… but as the father has sent me… I am sending you.... you don’t just get to sit on this… you odnt get to just believe this… you have to go somewhere with it… you’ve got the cure… you didn’t tell anyone? Father sent me… i told you… now I am telling you to do the same… we can’t just take the good parts and leave the mission behind… you are sent ones… that is the core of who you are… and we want to continuously do discipleship and raise people up but part of that is mission and sending people to do evangelism… why because we are suppposed to be moving forward and we want his kingdom to grow...
we are the sent ones… the first thing he tells you si that you are… but how am I going to do that....
John 20:22 ESV
22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
Love it.,, in the garden of eden takes teh dust and breathes life into him and he becomes a living being by the ruach of god… he becomes a new being… and here is god breathing into the disciples… and they are getting true life like Adam was supposed to be… and now he is looking for the disciples and us to go out and do that mandated thing… how are you going to do that? by the Holy Spirit....
John 20:23 ESV
23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”
THe message of forgiveness… have you received the message of forgiveness in your life that you could have never experienced before… ut has practical application in your life… have you received that now… and that is the question you ahve this morning… we have no control over life… we love the idea that we can solve it all ourselves… self salvation and realization is the great thought of our time.... but easter says no… you NEED Jesus
