John 4:21–24 (NASB95) — 21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 “You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 “But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. 24 “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
John 14:16–18 (NASB95) — 16 “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; 17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you. 18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.

The Holy Spirit is our helper, our comforter our teacher.
A Mentor is one who teaches and on who guides. In ancient Days when a Father would head off to another part of the world to conduct business or to fight in a war, there were times when the family would not see him for years and of coarse there would be the possibility where they would never see him again.
a Father would assign a Mentor to His son to teach him the ways of manhood. this Mentor may be a trusted servant or slave. That Slave’s sole purpose was to raise the son to be a man.
another example I think is King Arthur. in the Legion it was Murlan who would teach young Arthur all things
The servant would bring his loyalty. but the young master would have to bring his malleability. His obedience. His willingness to learn from his mentor. Without these qualities the young man would fail to grow up with the lessons that he needed to function as a man of the time.
so it is with each one of us. We have a positional relationship as a Child of God within the Royal Family of God. Our Master is in heaven sitting at the right hand of the Father. And He has sent to us the one who will stand beside and in us to teach us the ways of royalty.
The Holy Spirit may also be the one who is equated to be the friend of the bridegroom who is making all the arrangements for the consummation of the marriage.
The Spirit is Loyal to the Godhead and to His mission to nurture the Child of God’s growing in the Lord. For the Child’s part it cooperation to learn and grow under the assigned mentor.
So if we are to grow in our relaitonship in the Lord we must ourselves be in tune and in willing subjection to our mentor.
this is what it is to be filled with the spirit that indwells us.
Ephesians 5:18 (NASB95) — 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,

the Holy Spirit is a person as a member of the Holy Trinity. as persons we can know the Father and know the Son as they have revealed themselves to us. But the Holy Spirit is like the wind. and who can know the wind? He is the quiet partner of the God Head so it seems, doing his work without much notice or fanfare. As the believer grows, because of the work that is faithfully performed by the Spirit and relationship begins to emerge between the Child and his mentor. we begin to personally love our mentor as we become what the Father has intended us to be.
so we must in our obedience walk with the spirit moment by moment being molded and shaped into a sanctified life. a life that is pleasing to the Father and to the bridegroom who is our Lord Jesus Christ.
But by one’s own volition, one can reject this mentorship. The believer, the Child of God must make choices each day as to walk in accordance to the guidance of his mentor or to go his own way.
Point of Doctrine:
no one advances to a mature relationship with the Father and son one’s own terms.
dismissing the role of the holy Spirit within the life guarantees failure to live the Christian life and growing to maturity.
3. if we are to mature in the faith, it requires our cooperation with the Holy Spirit who is our mentor.
Galatians 5:16–18 (NASB95) — 16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. 17 For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law.
At any given time we are under the dictates of one of two authorities. that is the dictates of the Spirit of God or we under the dictates of the carnal nature. under the dictates of the Spirit we are said to be spiritual and walking by means of the Spirit.
1 Corinthians 3:1 (NASB95) — 1 And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, as to infants in Christ.
1 Corinthians 14:37 (NASB95) — 37 If anyone thinks he is a prophet or spiritual, let him recognize that the things which I write to you are the Lord’s commandment.
1 Corinthians 2:15–16 (NASB95) — 15 But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no one. 16 For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he will instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ.
Galatians 6:1 (NASB95) — 1 Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted.
if we are walking in sin we are said to be carnal, under the dictates of the flesh.
One cannot be walking in both the Spirit and the Flesh. it is all in with one or the other.
Matthew 6:24 (NASB95) — 24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.
the Holy Spirit is the third person of the God head coequal coeternal. and yes, when we sin we not only sin against the Father and the son but we also sin against the Holy Spirit which is within us.
at the point we are quenching the holy Spirit
1 Thessalonians 5:19 (NASB95) — 19 Do not quench the Spirit;

If we have the command not to do, then we have the ability ourselves to suppress the guiding influence of our mentor.
Note that our Spiritual lives and growth to maturity is all under the power of God the Holy Spirit. We cannot climb that mountain without a guide. we cannot climb that mountain if we do not take heed to the guides instruction.
so to quench the spirit is to suppress the work of the spirit that is there to train us up.
that quenching is done when we walk in sin, in accordance with our own fleshly desires.
Ephesians 4:30 (NASB95) — 30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

From 3077; TDNT 4:313; TDNTA 540; GK 3382; 26 occurrences; AV translates as “be sorrowful” six times, “grieve” six times, “make sorry” six times, “be sorry” three times, “sorrow” three times, “cause grief” once, and “be in heaviness” once. 1 to make sorrowful. 2 to affect with sadness, cause grief, to throw into sorrow. 3 to grieve, offend. 4 to make one uneasy, cause him a scruple.
Again the Holy spirit is a spirit but also a person who can be brought to grief. I will leave it to your own interpretation of what it is and how it is that God can grieve. I can only say there is a cause and effect.
That what I do or fail to do it brings an effect or response by the spirit of God. Paul says do not bring grief to the Holy Spirit, and I’d rather do not that will render a negative effect between myself and my Mentor the Holy Spirit.
Moment by moment, day by day, we make decisions to either walk in accordance with the Holy Spirit or we choose to go it alone according to the carnal nature. It is not even that we are doing anything overtly bad or immoral, we may see ourselves as pretty good people. Moral people. but morality is not the Spiritual life. There are a lot of morally good people who go about their lives dismissing God.
the spiritual life is the occupation with the persons of the God head growing and being prepared for the life forever with him. it is a higher calling than just living morally. ours is a life of faith.
So in summary
worshipping by means of the spirit is our daily and moment by moment communion with the third member of the Godhead who mentors us and trains us for royalty.
the second thing is Our worshipping in the Truth.
