The minister of a local congregation approached the desk of the city editor. "I just dropped by," he said, "to thank you for the very generous report on my sermon in your morning edition, and also to register a mild protest. In your article you referred to me as "the reverend" but you spelled it neverend.'"
What do people like to hear at a ball game? The final score.
What do people like to see at a play? The final act.
What do people like to hear in a sermon? Now in Conclusion, or Now for the benediction.
A few years ago there was a popular song out called "WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MAKES - 24 LITTLE HOURS." Like most popular songs it quickly passed.
We went to the Capital a few years ago & as we walked around the capital looking at the pictures of the Governors.
I thought, What a difference a day makes. Most people could not tell you who the Governor was 20 or 30 or 40 yrs ago. Yet they spend great sums of money, energy and time to get that job, to be the most powerful men in the state. A few days out of office we don’t even know who they were or what they did much less we don't care.
What difference a day makes to the dreams and hopes of the followers of Abraham Lincoln, Mahatma Ghandis, Martin Luther King, John Kennedy, Anwar Sadat, John Lenon. Each of these men set out to change their countries. These men tried to teach and share their hopes, BUT assassins' bullets claimed their short lives. All died, we would say untimely deaths, their work unfinished. Their followers wept during the funeral processions, mourning with a sense of hopelessness & aimlessness as their heroes were laid in their tombs. There they yet lie, taken from the scene of human history, except in the memory of their faithful followers.
What a difference a day makes, all their plans plunged into despair & hopelessness.
At this time of year we think of Our Jesus Christ. During his short life of only 33 yrs -he came upon the world scene when he was 30. John the Baptist said, "BEHOLD THE LAMB OF GOD WHO TAKES AWAY THE SINS OF THE WORLD" The hearts of the Jewish people were filled with the hope that he was the Messiah. Here was the one who would bring love, joy and peace, and finally, the kingdom of righteousness, He would drive out the Romans and be their King as prophesied in the O.T..
But Jesus' life was cut short. Some religious leaders in Israel were jealous that people followed Jesus and decided they did not like his message of repentance & righteousness.
They were afraid they would lose all their political & religious power. They said it is better that one man die than for us to lose our power. They arranged to use the Romans and courts.
The 1st charge they brought against him was blasphemy, a religious charge, because he said he was the Son of God. That did not work.
2nd They charged Him with the threat to tear down the temple in 3 days. That didn’t work.
3rd They charged Him with treason, for in response to Pilate's question.
“ARE YOU THE KING THEY SAY YOU ARE?" He replied, "You said it."
He was forced through 6 mock trials and they nailed him on a cross. In three hours He was dead. His brokenhearted followers took Him down from the cross this man they had loved & followed.
They had stood in wonder at his actions among them, the love he shared, the message He brought. They took their dead leader & laid him in a borrowed tomb.
They went away, each to his own home brokenhearted. What a difference a day had made in their lives. They did not believe He would rise from the dead.
The actions of the disciples proves they did not believe in the resurrection and they did not make up the story.
The next day was a Sabbath. In the synagogue, his disciples must have prayed, their hearts overcome with grief, their hopes and dreams shattered.
The following day was Sunday. What a difference this day would make in the lives of the apostles, in the lives of the women who went to the tomb, and in the lives of all who would later follow the disciples. What a difference this one day would make in our lives today.
Luke 24 describes that one day. Here we get a picture of the emotions & actions of the followers of J.C. over a period of 12 hrs.

Most people think they are the only skeptics concerning the Resurrection of J.C.
God loves honest skeptics.
One of the greatest proofs of the Resurrection is the change in the lives of Jesus followers.
On Passover they saw the death of their Leader and Lord.
On Saturday he was in the grave.
They did not believe he would rise from the dead although he had told them 5 times.
1ST THE WOMEN DID NOT BELIEVE JESUS WOULD RISE. 24:1
It is early dawn. The women have gotten up early to go to the tomb-Mary Magdalene, the woman who had seven demons cast out of her, Joanna, and Mary, the mother of James.
These women had followed Jesus, helping out of their substance to promote his ministry.
They had been among the women who ministered to Jesus in Galilee and who had stood with Him at the cross (Matt. 27:55–56).
They went to the tomb to finish the job of preparing his body for death.
The Sabbath had come and they had not completed the work so they buried His body in a tomb. They went back on Sunday morning to finish the job they purchased perfume to anoint the body of Jesus when the Sabbath had ended; perfume to keep away the smell of death. They believe they would never see him again. They spent a great deal of $$ money to anoint his dead body because they loved him. What a difference a day makes.
They did not really believe He would rise! Why would you spend hundreds of $$ dollars on expensive spices to embalm a body if you believed He would rise from the dead?
It is interesting to point out that the women had 2 major problems:
1st How were they going to get past the Roman guards,
2nd It was a capital offence to break the seal.
3rd How were they going to roll the stone away so they could get inside the tomb?
But when they arrived at the tomb, they found the stone had been moved aside by a severe earthquake.
This was the second supernaturally caused earthquake in connection with Jesus’ death and burial, the first one having occurred at the moment of His death (Matt. 27:51). Scripture tells us that the graves of the Believers were opened when Jesus died.
When He rose many of them rose and came back to town.
**Can you imagine the surprise when Grandpa knocks on the door Sunday Morning and says, I am hungry, let me in I haven’t eaten in 10 years. But Gramps you have been dead 10 years! What are you doing here??? All over Jerusalem many families had the experience of a dead loved one being resuscitated and coming back home!
God caused an earthquake on Mount Sinai just before He revealed the law to Moses (Ex. 19:18) and on Mount Horeb when He revealed Himself to Elijah (1 Kings 19:11). In the end times. He will also send numerous earthquakes (Joel 2:10; Matt. 24:7; Rev. 6:12; 8:5; 11:13–19).
Now, within three days, He caused two earthquakes just outside Jerusalem.
This earthquake had occurred when an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, causing the earth around the grave to tremble violently.
The angel had come to open the secured and sealed grave, not to let Jesus out, as many Easter stories and paintings suggest. He was already out but to let the people in, and when the angel arrived he rolled away the stone and sat upon it. Although it had probably taken several strong men some time to put the stone in place, the angel removed it in an instant.
If Jesus had the power to raise Himself from the dead, which He did (John 10:18), He certainly had the relatively minor power required to escape a sealed grave[1]
The stone had been rolled away, and they expected to find a body but all they saw was the grave clothes. The description given is like a cocoon chrysalises after the butterfly escapes it collapses.
As they surveyed the tomb, perplexed, they saw two angels dressed in dazzling white.
V5 THE WOMEN WERE TERRIFIED (dumbfounded) and bowed their faces to the ground.”
THE ANGELS SAID, "WHY DO YOU SEEK THE LIVING AMONG THE DEAD? V6 HE IS NOT HERE FOR HE HAS RISEN. REMEMBER HOW HE SPOKE TO YOU WHILE HE WAS STILL IN GALILEE, SAYING THAT THE SON OF MAN MUST BE DELIVERED INTO THE HANDS OF MEN AND BE CRUCIFIED AND ON THE THRID DAY RISE AGAIN?"
The angels were actually rebuking the women. They were saying, (How many times did He have to tell you? "HE TOLD YOU MANY TIMES (5 times) THAT HE MUST BE CRUCIFIED AND ON THE 3RD DAY HE WOULD RISE AGAIN FROM THE DEAD. WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE???
IT'S THE THIRD DAY! DID YOU EXPECT THE FIND THE LIVING IN A GRAVEYARD???"
V8 THEY REMEMBERED HIS WORDS
V9 The women ran back to the disciples and shared excitedly with them this great news. He has risen from the dead. He is risen like He said he would!"
V11 NOTICE THE RESPONSE OF THE 11 MEN!
1. What you are telling us is Nonsense!
2. You are making it up!
3. You are delusionary!
4. You just want to believe it in spite of the facts, dead men don’t rise.
5. The Gov. of MN Jessie Vantura said “Christianity is only for weak people.” You ladies are weak and you want to believe a myth.
It is also tragically true, however, that throughout history many have denied, despised, and mocked the truth of resurrection, especially Christ’s. But only a fool tries to explain away resurrection, because the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ are man’s only hope of salvation and eternal life.
J An early Protestant missionary to the Ryukyu Islands in the western Pacific discovered a strange mass grave. The grave marker revealed that more than 11,000 heads taken from bodies of Christians were buried there. On further investigation he learned that in 1637 the Japanese government, which then controlled the Ryukyus, ordered all Christians in the empire exterminated. Because they knew Christians believed in the resurrection, the heads of martyred believers were buried a great distance from the bodies, in the belief that their resurrection would thereby be prevented.
The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the single greatest event in the history of the world. It is so foundational to Christianity that no one who denies it can be a true Christian. Without resurrection there is no Christian faith, no salvation, and no hope no future.
Paul explains, If you say “Not even Christ has been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is vain, your faith also is vain” (1 Cor. 15:13–14).
A person who believes in a Christ who was not raised believes in a powerless Christ, a dead Christ.
Many of our Liberal friends have a hopeless faith, they don’t believe in the resurrection, they celebrate Easter because it is a nice day to hear a moral teacher.
In The Everlasting Man, G.K Chesterton pointed out that no great moral teacher ever claimed to be God- Not Mohammed, not Micah, not Malachi, or Confucius, or Plato, or Moses, or Buddha: ‘Not one of them ever made that claim…and the greater the man is, the less likely he is to make the very greatest claim.’ C.S. Lewis writes
1. ‘If you had gone to Buddha and asked him “Are you the son of Bramah?” he would have said “My son, you are still in the vale of illusion.”
- If you had gone to Socrates and asked, “Are you Zeus?” he would have laughed at you.
- If you had gone to Mohammed and asked “Are you Allah?: he would first have rent his clothes and then cut your head off. The idea of a great moral teacher saying what Christ said is out of the questions.”
The Claim of Jesus Christ to be God and to have authority to forgive sins only one of three possibilities:
1. He is a liar
2. He is a lunatic on the level of a poached egg
3. He is Lord
But His disciples did not believe what he said: Which proves they did not make this up!
If Christ did not rise from the dead, then no redemption was accomplished at the cross and “your faith is worthless,” Paul goes on to say; “you are still in your sins” (v. 17).[2]
It is hardly surprising, therefore, that the first sermon on the day the church was born focused on the resurrection of Christ. After charging his hearers with Jesus’ death, Peter declared, “And God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power” (Acts 2:23–24). Peter continued to preach the resurrection to his fellow Jews (Acts 4:10) as well as to Gentiles (10:40).[3]
As He demonstrated during several postresurrection appearances, just as He was no longer bound by death, He was no longer bound by the limitations of the physical world or of time (see Luke 24:31; John 20:26). In His glorified form He could escape a closed grave just as easily as He could enter a closed room.
2ND THE APOSTLES DID NOT BELIEVE
These are wonderful brave men! NO! They are hiding for their life. They sent the women out. When the women return all excited they treat them as women who are just over emotional and have seen some vision.
The men, logical beings that they were, said, "Nonsense. Wives' tales. Foolishness. Silly women." But Peter (and other passages say John also) ran to the tomb to check out the women's story. They were probably thinking, "It's not very logical, but they are our sisters.
“We ought to placate them." We will go look & prove them wrong.
V12 The men looked into the tomb and saw only the linen wrapping lying there. Peter went to his home, marveling over what had taken place. He did not understand. He had some problems with it, despite the testimony of the women and the testimony of the empty tomb. What a difference a day is making.
Saturday night they were hiding in despair, confused, Jesus their Leader is dead, the promised Messiah is dead, the teacher is dead, the miracle worker is dead. Their future is dead. Lock the doors bar the windows so they do not come and arrest us and put us to death!
II. WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOUR LEADER DIES?
READ LUKE 24:13-24
3RD HUSBAND & WIFE WHO DID NOT BELIEVE
This event takes place on the road to Emmaus.
V18 gives us one of their names Cleopas. Most likely this is a husband and wife.
John 19:25 says Clopas and his wife was Mary.
Most likely according to FF Bruce Mary had been at the cross. She went to the tomb to anoint the body with Mary Magdalene v10. She saw the angel and returned and left for home with her husband Clopas.
Like many couples they were having a problem believing the story. In this they are like the followers of any other assassinated leader. What do you do when your leader dies?
They think what is going to happen to me. Now what do we do?
These two decided to go back home to Emmaus, 7 miles from Jerusalem. As they are walking, they are discussing the events that had occurred trying to understand the events.
Perhaps they are saying, "IF JESUS HAD ONLY RUN FROM THE GARDEN, what a different day that would have been. IF JESUS HAD NOT SAID TO PILATE, 'You said it."
V15 While they are what If’ing, THE LORD APPEARED TO THEM, BUT HE PREVENTED THEM FORM SEEING WHO HE WAS. I believe he did that so he could teach them who they were, so they could see how much they needed him & how much he could teach them.
How often do we get caught up in the grief of life, not understanding what God is doing. We hear the truth, but the eyes of our heart are not enlightened. We don't understand so we settle for the physical or the historical interpretation of what is going on in our lives, never seeing beyond that to the spiritual realm.
Jesus will now quietly begin to work on these two disciples to get them to see who he is.
V19 "What has been happening in Jerusalem?" He asks them.
They say, "Are you serious? You don't know what's been going on? It's hard to believe that. Well, to begin, there are three things we would like to share with you.
1st stranger we want to tell you about the prophet who was READ v 19-20
We'd like to tell you about Jesus. There were many Jesus, but the one we want to talk about is the one who lived in Nazareth, up north.
2nd he was a prophet who was, past tense. He was a might man of God who made the Scripture shine forth so that we understood who God was, who we were, and what God wanted of us. It was always an exciting adventure to be with him. But, unfortunately, he is the prophet who was."
1. v20 The Chief Priest and the religious leaders delivered Jesus to the Romans to be put to death by Crucifixion.
- v22 The women went to the tomb this morning and found an empty grave. This amazed us because they did not find his body. They claimed they were visited by angels, who said He is alive.
- v24 (Peter & James) went to the tomb to check it out and found what the women said was true.
They continued, once we even though he might be the prophet Moses talks about in Deut.
He was mighty in deeds. MY, the good works he did among us! He was the one of whom John the Baptist, though his disciples, asked. 'Are you the one who should look for or is there someone else?" Jesus replied to that question, "GO TELL JOHN THAT THE BLIND RECEIVE THEIR SIGNT, THE LAME WALK, THE LEPERS ARE CLEANSED, THE DEAF HEAR, THE DEAD ARE RAISED, AND THE POOR HAVE THE GOSPEL PREACHED TO THEM." And his prophet was might in speech too. Why, he talked like one who had authority, not like the scribes who are always quoting somebody else. And he was mighty in the sight of God. Twice we heard the father say from heaven. "THIS IS MY BELOVED SON IN WHOM I AM WELL PLEASED”
The people loved him, but the SUPREME COURT delivered him up to the sentence of death. They crucified a good man, a prophet. Our dreams were shattered."
The disciples viewed the cross as a failure: "HE ALMOST MADE IT, BUT HE FAILED. HE GOT CAUGHT ON TWO STUPID CHARGES AND THEY NAILED HIM TO A CROSS."
Ralph Earle says:
True, it was the world's blackest hour, but also the world's brightest hour. It was the blackest hour because human hatred came to its fiercest focus. It was the brightest hour because divine love came to its fullest flower. At Calvary, hate was seen in all of its heinous horror, but there also love revealed the heart of God. Calvary stands at the crossroads of human history. At the cross, all the sins of the ages were placed on the heart of the sinless Son of God, as he became the representative of all humanity. From the cross salvation flows to every believing soul. This is the gospel, the greatest good news the world had ever heard.
And these disciples missed it.
The disciples were skeptics they did not believe it would happen.
Next the 2 disciples shared with Jesus their broken dreams v21
READ v 21 "WE THOUGHT THAT THIS MAN WE FOLLOWED FOR 3 YRS WOULD BRING FREEDOM FROM THE ROMANS, LIKE GOD REDEEMED ISREAL FROM EGYPT, AND FROM BABYLON."
We were hoping He would bring in his kingdom & we would live like we were designed to live, to be the salt & light, the true vine of the whole world.
But our hopes our dreams were shattered 3 days ago. If he was the prophet, the Messiah, if he was the Son of God, the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, & if he was going to rise again from the dead, where is he? It's already been 3 days!!!
READ v 22-24
They said, WE LEFT JERUSALEM BECAUSE WE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO MAKE OF THESE EVENTS. WE'VE BEEN SO VERY SAD ABOUT IT EVER SINCE. OUR FRIEND & LEADER IS DEAD."
The disciples could not see beyond the physical circumstances; they could not see the reality of what God was trying to teach them for 3 yrs, that J.C. was the Son of God. Jesus told them over & over again that he had come to suffer & die & then to rise again. They could not see the cross cancelled the sin, the guilt and the shame of humanity forever.
It was the Resurrection that gives us hope, it proved that Jesus’ death for our sins has been accepted by God the Father. The physical resurrection of Jesus is the cornerstone of the Christian faith.
Without it there would be no forgiveness of our sins & no salvation;
There would be no hope now, no hope later, no life now, no life later.
The great joy of Easter is that Jesus rose from the dead.
L The brother of one of my classmates was killed in an accident when he was in High School. They were a family who did not attend any church. At the funeral everyone wore black, and as they were driving to the cemetery the mother tried to commit suicide by jumping out the moving car. They had no hope. The spent the rest of their life mourning.
What a contrast to go to a funeral of a CX were the family is dressed in bright colors. They are talking to each other and some are quietly laughing at times. What is the difference. The assurance of the resurrection. What makes the difference? Jesus Resurrection, and His promise, that if He rose from the dead we would also.
1. For the Christian death is not a time of mourning, but of joy.
2. For the Christian death is the door from the land of the dying into the land of the living.
3. For the Christian death is graduation from the school of hard knox’s to Glory.
We mourn for our dear ones who have died because we loved them, and now we miss them. We shed tears because the tears are a picture of love, and we miss them.
If you were to ask a Christians who has died, Do you want to come back & be with us again? They would say, "Are you serious? I like you, but ...leave the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, leave my new body, leave when I no longer weep, where I no longer get sick, where I can eat and eat and never have to go on a diet? Come back? No!"
J Author Brsbane once pictured a crowd of grieving caterpillars carrying the corpse of a cocoon to its final resting place. The poor, distressed caterpillars, clad in black raiment, were weeping. While overhead a beautiful butterfly fluttered happily above the earth, forever freed from its earthly shell.
What a difference Jesus makes:
- For the Buddhist when you die you do not raise again you get recycled.
Don’t step on a bug it may be your uncle,
don’t step on an ant it may be your aunt.
2. For the Evolutionist, when you die you just return to the earth. It’s the end, no hope.
The resurrected Lord listened to his disciples, trapped in their blindness, their grief, their perplexity & their unbelief. Then he moved them from the physical events to a higher spiritual plane, a plane of reality, and exposed them again to the truth written by the prophets concerning His suffering & His glory. What a difference this day is making.
III. LATE AFTERNOON READ 24:25-27
Jesus is saying, "YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND. YOUR HEARTS WERE NOT OPEN TO BELIEVE ME WHEN I TOLD YOU WHO I WAS. I AM THE SON OF GOD, BUT YOU MISSED OUT WHEN YOU DIDN'T SEE THAT THE MESSIAH MUST FIRST SUFFER AND THEN ENTER HIS GLORY. YOU SKIPPED OVER THE SUFFERING & WENT RIGHT TO THE GLORY. FOR THE REMAINDER OF OUR WALK TOGETHER I AM GOING TO TAKE THE SCRIPTURES & EXPLAIN TO YOU MY PLACE IN ALL OF THEM SO THAT YOU WILL UNDERSTAND."

I am the Son of Righteousness with healing in his wings in Malachi."
What a lesson!
I am in every book.
The truths he shared with the disciples are very important for us, because the Suffering Servant, then as the Son of God, and the Son of Man, is the Messiah.
IV. EARLY EVENING 24:28-32
On reaching the village, the disciples asked Jesus to stay with them.
As they were eating, he broke the bread & passed it to them. Then at last their eyes were opened, but just as they realized who he was, he disappeared. They thought about their walk with him & how their hearts burned within them on their journey as he shared the Scriptures with them.
For the first time, through the teaching of Jesus, they understood what the Scriptures meant. They could not wait to share with the other disciples the good news that they had spent the whole afternoon with the resurrected Lord & did not know it.
How do we know something is true. The Holy Spirit confirms with our spirits. Our hearts burn with in us.
How often have you spend time & suddenly realized the Lord was in your midst.
The Bible is the most published book of all time. You may have half a dozen in your home.
You find them in hotel rooms, libraries, book stores. But to read the Bible is not to understand it. The Bible must be taught by the Spirit of God to hungry hearts. The Bible is not a magic book. It is the Word of God, but until we come to it in belief we will never understand it; it will be just one more history book. We need the Spirit of God to open our eyes & to show us who the Christ is. Then our hearts will start to burn within us, and we will desire to learn more and more of this Lord & Savior.
V. EVENING 24:33-36
The disciples could not wait to get back & share the news with the others. This time they walked not complaining, not wishing, not hoping, not in despair, sadness, hopelessness or aimlessness, but with their hearts burning within them. They had to wait to share their experience because Peter was sharing what he had seen.
Finally, the 2 disciples said, "Can we tell you what happened to us?
We were going down the Emmaus road..." They started to share their story, excitedly interrupting each other & confirming the truth. The women I am sure spoke up. Mary Magdalene would have said, "Yes, I touched him. I talked to him earlier this morning, but you wouldn't believe me."
Suddenly to everyone’s amazement the Resurrected Jesus stood in their midst..
What a difference that day made in the life of the disciples.
In less then 24 hrs. They changed from view of hopelessness, Non believers, who lived in fear.
Our Leader is dead, there is no more hope. No forgiveness for sin.
Our Leader is dead, Evil triumphs, goodness & righteousness loses.
Our Leader is dead, All his promise are gone, all are dreams are now night mares.
What a difference that day made in their lives,
They were skeptics who meet the risen resurrected Lord & went to all the world to tell the Good News. They changed their careers, because of that day. They became missionaries, Pastors, Apostles, Teachers & Evangelists.
They were called by people of their own time as the men who turned the world upside down.
What a different life you would have if you would but go to the Lord, & with your unbelief, tell him you do not understand but that you want your heart enlightened to see if what he says is true. Ask him to open the eyes of your heart & to burn upon your heart the truth of the Scriptures so that you too can see that he is the Lord of Lords and King of Kings.
What a difference that will make in your life. If you allow Jesus to be your Lord he will come into your life, he will forgive you sins, he will take care of your guilt, he will take away your shame and your fear, and he will give you his Spirit of Life and power to live your life as God intended it to be lived.
You can then join with the disciples & say Yes we were going down the road of discouragement, the road of unbelief, the road of doubt. But what a difference that day made in our lives.
In Chemistry, He turned water to wine.
In Biology, He was born without the normal conception;
In Physics, He disproved the law of gravity when He ascended into heaven;
In Economics, He disproved the law of diminishing return by feeding 5000 men with two fishes & 5 loves of bread;

Jesus had no medicines, yet they called Him Healer.
Jesus had no army, yet kings feared Him.
Jesus won no military battles, yet He conquered the world.
Jesus committed no crime, yet they crucified Him.
Jesus was buried in a tomb, yet he lives today.
